An incredible display of EPO-fueled awesomeness! As a spectator, I think this was the most exciting era for cycling (though perhaps not the healthiest for the racers... :-)

little known fact that both Lance and Marco were huge lovers of 19th century American literature. Often after a hard day in the saddle they could both be found in their hotel rooms enthusiastically consuming their nightly dose of Edgar Allan Poe.

This is the absolut proof that Pantani was the best climber, he was racing againt Armstrong who had a hidden motor in the bike and still resist and came first. ( see CBC 60 min documentary on Armstrong motor).

Armstrong going after Pantani in themonr ventoux was unreal.
Armstrong was so fast and yet so effortless during a long and hard climb.
He reached Pantani and took the lead.
We can see on the video that Pantani is grimacing and visibly in pain, next to an Armstrong looking strong.
This look very suspicious. Was helped by an electric motor?
Pantani was one of the best climber of all time.

The ultimate showdown would have been if they were both doped to the gills. Too bad Marco got suspended after winning the 1998 Giro + the Tour de France, and he wasn't able to perform the same. Lance couldn't beat Pantani up the mountains. 27 years later Pantani still hold the record time up alpe d'huez.. actually he holds the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Armstrong and Ulrich are in 4th and 5th. We will never know who was better because cycling is so corrupt. A great race like the Tour de France which can answer so many questions but we are left wondering because they couldn't just let them dope. Who cares? NO ONE! If they did why is it still going on today?! Such a shame and a pity to remove Lance and all those other great cyclists from the history books. Shame on the people who made that horrible decision. RIP Marco!

No, Armstrong admitted to having doped. Pantani's extremely high hematocrit levels were one of the main factors in bringing attention to EPO use in cycling. Probably was a factor in his early demise as well.
