It really is undeniably one of the worst fucking lines of dialogue ever written, period. It’s completely shocking just how utterly fucking abysmal it is. It’s actually impressive. I’m seriously taken aback by it whenever I watch it again, confirming it’s real to myself. Just in awe, really.

You see, this is a reference to the NES platformer "Super Mario Bros" released in 1983 designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and published by the Japanese company, Nintendo. The player controls either Mario Mario or Luigi Mario. Mario's objective in the game is save Princess Peach (the ruler of the fictional Mushroom Kingdom where the game is set) from the game's main antagonist, Bowser. It would seem that Kojima decided to put in this dialogue easter egg as a direct reference to "Super Mario Bros" by not only referencing the eponymous character outright, but by playfully rhyming "Peach" with "beach."

Kojima meant it to be funny and ironic but he put it at like an emotional high point where the drama and the payoff was supposed to happen and it just reads like cringey fanfiction. I'd say maybe it's better in Japanese but I doubt it. What the hell. Cause the rest if it is fairly interesting and decently thought out. This feels like him going "but what if, though" and no one could stop him lol.
Personally I love the on the noes dialogue, makes for better conversations.

This is what happens when you try to translate Japanese punnery into English.
This kind of wordplay only works for homophones in English. The best example I can think of is the "Michael Withabee" TikTok. Withabee, with a B, 'where's the bee?'. That's the kind of wordplay it would have been in Japanese. For this to have worked they would needed to work Beech trees into this somehow. Something like "Stay here with me where we can grow old like a couple of Beech trees."
