@@badcornflakes6374 easy way to think about it - Police watch a city, sheriff's watch County. While a city may have ordances, a sheriff is in charge of that county under the governor. The deputy of said sheriff are an extension of himself. This is how I've thought of it/how it was was explained to me. Sheriff is the greater county while police is city. So not like a constable at all.

Odds are that it going to end badly for them, and they surely know that. I have been to the states many times as a kid and with later with work - it's my favourite place in the world. I was a deputy sheriff. At least a couple times a year I'd have people tell me I couldn't stop them because I wasn't a real cop. I got special pleasure out of writing those citations. However, it wasn't as bad as being a Fish & Game warden. They had full peace officer powers and generally drove trucks with red and blue lights on top, a tip off to the non stupid that the guy who stopped you might be a real cop. Nevertheless, we'd get fairly regular calls to backup a warden because the driver (usually drunk) was yelling at dispatch he was being stopped by some kind of fake cop.

As the daughter, sister, niece and ex-wife of deputies, I could only sigh and voice an exasperated "Fuck off" to the non-sworn, unenlightened claims, "But, he's not a cop". A LEO is a LEO. Shit. I had a veteran officer take me down because I had fit the description of a suspect and his girlfriend were breaking into cars, stealing parts and whatever and selling them. Gun drawn everything and I simply complied and was given a ride back home safely and they apologized. It’s easy STFU AND JUST DO WHAT YOUR TOLD TO DO.
I think it's a cultural thing. A lot of people with criminal tendencies probably grew up in crappy conditions, surrounded by incredibly negative people whom taught them nothing but spite and confrontation, and adopted a culture that makes compassion, compliance, and/or respect seem like weakness... and that last one, tragically, is probably constantly reaffirmed by the toxic community these criminals come from.
To criminals, it must seem like a matter of honor: to comply is surrender, to surrender is to be weak, and that weakness would probably get them killed in other scenarios in their lives.

I’m a transportation officer and I relate 100% to the Dylan case. Sometimes transports get delayed more than we expect and have to feed them by policy, it’s a basic human right. So what do we do? We stop and McDonald’s lol and feed them 2 burgers dry. Fries unsalted. And a bottle water.
Come on if it was you in cuffs in the back of that bus. You would be hungry too and would want to get fed. It is what it is. We don’t have an industrial kitchen in the bus to cook for them. Neither do the police stations.

You DO realize that not every single police action is caught on camera, not every single instance captured on camera depicting police interactions is safe for public release, and that not all footage showing police action that IS suitable or safe for public release is just opened to the public, right?

I’m Mexican, my friend is black. We both got pulled over by a Caucasian officer. Really amazing guy, when he arrived to the car we thanked him for his service. We complied and follow ditto. He let us go. However, if he would’ve acted wild and aggressive then maybe we would’ve given us a ticket.

Former Fed, we had to keep checklists of when we provided bathroom breaks, beverage, smoke breaks and food to subjects/suspects. It was scrutinized in court to try and argue we treated them poorly.
