This Flower Field Needs An Overhaul

- We've planted flowers in this field the past two years, but the crop has never been great. The weeds have been terrible and the ground is very compacted. Its time for an overhaul so we'll turn the soil over with the 2 bottom plow then disc it to create a smooth planting surface for the next planting.

~~About Us~~
We're a 43 acre Christmas tree farm in central Virginia. We bought the property in November 2018 and have been documenting our whole journey starting this business from the ground up. We didn't have any ag experience prior to starting this business, so we're constantly learning as we go! Over the years we’ve expanded from just Christmas trees into doing pick-your-own flowers and firewood.
We are thankful for you viewers and subscribers and love your comments and feedback!

I do not know if this matters. But when we disk our fields. We go at a 45 degree of the plow marks. Helps break down the soil a little better. You differently have to hit it a few times at a 45 degree. But it does make the field better. Also we run about 3 to 5 less air in the back tires. Makes it stick a little better. Hope that helps.
Awesome new planting field. Should make a big difference. Great job
We never disced until a couple of days after turning the soil to prevent huge clods of dirt and it getting stuck as you did. Also if you weight down the whole disc attachment it will definitely go deeper. Our old disk had a hand made metal rack built on top of it that we weighted it down with many cinder blocks. Once you get it down to small clods of dirt you can straighten your discs and get a very smooth finish.
makes sense. thanks for the info.
Hi Phil,
Thanks again for the time you spent with us when we visited in February.
The property is looking good. Keep the videos coming, really enjoy watching them.
Thanks a lot. I enjoyed your visit. Take care
Will you look into growing and selling pumpkins. It's kinda big business here in North Georgia. They sell a lot like Christmas trees but orange lol
we tried a few pumpkins our first year and it was a big failure. I also feel like every farm around here does pumpkins - there's a lot of competition for fall activities, but now that we've grown our customer base that might not be a deal breaker and we can look into it again.
Does your tractor have a differential lock? If so that would help pull the plow quite a bit better. You could also look at lowering rear tire pressure a bit to get a little more traction.
It does, but its a spring activated foot lever you press with your heel. Its kind of a pain to use. I did engage it as needed and it definitely helps but its uncomfortable to do for a long time. I wish this tractor could engage diff lock with a switch or lever.
@@WoodsTreeFarm I agree those foot pedal styles are annoying.
which episode would I watch about treating for grubs before planting trees?
I don't think I covered that in a video sorry. You'll want to treat in May-June when the grubs are actively feeding. There are numerous granular products on the market. I don't recall which one I used. Talk to your local extension office for more info.
To me it looks like you are plowing too deep, but it looks very nice after the disking
I'm kind of trying to go as deep as possible to really work up the soil. I don't know if that's right or wrong. Time will tell.
Will you be using the no till this year?
that's the plan
Awesome. Can't wait to see more of that
