- How big of a tiller can we run on our Kubota L3901? Hopefully the 6' tiller we purchased doesn't prove to be too much for it.
We needed a large tiller to do some of the soil amendments and cover crops needed to build our soil.

People who have not used a stand behind tiller will never appreciate how great a PTO tiller can be. I've been dragged behind a tiller for hours. Good video sir.
oh yes, I've used a smaller gas powered tiller.
I have a Troy Bilt rear tine roto-tiller, still works, but now that I have a tractor and a PTO tiller the old walk behind tiller probably won't get much use.
If you think the walk behinds are a pain now, you should have gotten half beaten to death by one of the old ones, back before they even put wheels on them. Just tines and a single lay off plow. I started plowing with one of the old ones when I was so young the tiller weighed more than I did.
I came in from plowing bloody and with knots on my head where the metal handles hit me repeatedly, til I got tall enough and strong enough to handle it better. Send a teenager out to do that now, much less a 5 or 6 year old as I was, and you would get hit with child abuse charges. Of course that's what wrong with most kids today, they need some toughing up, and a work ethic.
Iam gonna do a two bottom plow and use my disc and a walk behind tiller.

Nice video. I have a 5 foot tiller that is similar to yours that I use with a 28 hp tractor. Those PTO tillers are awesome. One thing that I have found that helps when hooking up the PTO is to back up not quite all the way to the attachment. Then hook up the PTO before backing up the remaining 6 inches or so to hook up the 3 point. I tried this once out of near desperation and have done this every time since. Thanks for the good content.

Thanks for the information. Legitimately answered some questions we have about power. We're currently deciding on our first machine.
Go with the Kubota and you will never regret it. Just make sure to get a machine slightly bigger than you think you will need. You can always do the job with a machine slightly too large, but an underpowered tractor will make life miserable.
To figure out what tractor you need, first look at what tools you plan to use. Once you know what tools you want / need, then get the tractor to drive all those tools with a little extra HP above that recommended by the tool manufacturer, if you can afford it.
Also hydrostatic drive tractors tend to be less powerful than their clutch driven counterparts, so add around 10 hp or 10% (which ever is less) to the recommended hp for your tools so you get a capable tractor for that tool.
Congratulations on the tiller. Looking just like farm land now. The soil and your plants will appreciate it. Great job. Looks good from here. Green manure is a must to hold your soil also from blowing away and add nutrients.

I think the setup works fine, I till a lot during the spring and summer, from old gardens to break ground new gardens. I've never had to plow it first, of course that's a personal preference. To smooth it out buy a old farm spike drag and drag it a few times it will look great. Another good video keep on it!
We've had real back compaction to deal with on our property after decades of cows on the property, so I do subsoiling and plowing to try to improve soil quality and drainage beyond the top couple inches. Thanks for watching

Hi Phil! That seems like a good tiller and looks like your L3901 powers it just fine. I can relate to leaving the kick stand down! I did that with my landscape rake and bent it but it still works. Thanks for sharing!

Since this video I've bent back and re-bent the kickstand several times. haha! I don't know why that step is so hard to remember. I've used the tiller a bunch here in 2022 and it continues to serve me well. Thanks for watching
We have a 30 year old tiller and it gets used every year. Multiple times a year.

I bought that exact tiller in 2006. I pull it with a L3830HST and never had any issues and I have tilled lots of ground with it. Used it on a few landscaping jobs as well. Those King Kutters are gear drive and very heavy duty. I think I paid $1300 in 2006 for mine

You're going to find more uses for that tiller than you know. I run a 6' king kutter tiller behind my L3301. Works great. If your tiller runs a slip clutch on the PTO, make sure it slips and it's adjusted properly. Mine was adjusted too tight from the factory.

I actually borrowed the tiller off of my Boss and the next year I ended up buying it so the driveshaft was the right length for my tractor
120 years ago, American chestnut trees drew deer and other wild life but then they died off from Dutch Elm Disease. Now they developed a stable cross between Chinese chestnuts and American that does not die off from this disease. Dunstan is the new breed. If you try a test plot of them, see the deer come for the goodies, and once planted, these native trees grow on their own with a little help the first year. It beats plowing food plots every year, and the nuts are very nutritious for humans as well.
I can sympathize completely with hooking up the PTO shaft. That is the biggest thing I dread when changing PTO driven implements. Also, I suggest you consider getting a hydraulic top link. I have found mine quite useful, such as with the mower, the landscape rake, the box blade, etc.

The tiller worked great. I’d like to see it on some unplowed ground to see how it does breaking through the sod.
I'm curious of that too. There will definitely be some of that to come in the future.
@@FlatCreekOutdoors I have the exact same setup, Kubota L3901 and the countryline 72" tiller. I live in Oklahoma and my horse field has never been tilled before. I borrowed a friends 5' tiller and it just skipped right across the ground and never dug in. So I got mad and went out and bought this one and it absolutely destroyed the ground like it was butter. FYI dont lift that tiller up at full RPM it could cause the PTO shaft bearing to blow out. If im not mistaken it states it in the instructions along with not putting it into the ground at full speed either. Dont want you to break either machine or tiller both are way too expensive.
I have one on a 3301. Works on sod but have to take several passes. Shallow on the first then a little deeper and so on. Pain to hook up.
I just got a heavy duty terra force 74" from Everything attachments for my L4701. After seeing this it makes me feel ok better about my choice. I have yet to run it. Mine says on their site it's not quick hitch compatible, which sucks. Looks like it will but may be a issue with the pto shaft angle. We'll see.

I use a 5 foot tiller behind my Kioti CX2510. I have sandy soil. When I'm done it is like powdered sugar.

How hard was it to remove the lawnmower deck on your tractor?
I suspect you discovered it was 5 inches off of that shaft. Did you use a torque wrench and Loctite?
Of course it will handle it. I run one on a b2650 no problems even in hard ground. But no country line for me.

Is your tractor able to free rotate PTO? On my JD, the pto doesnt, which make the first time attachment really hard to install. I think the gear of the implement had to rotate to match my tractor. Once done, it seems to be much easier.
yes, mine will rotate, so that can make it easier to connect
Been using one for the last three years on my L3901.
its going to be hard to level if you till too deep. But you can get you a cross tie and some chain and drag it or even an old chain link fence with some old tires on it to level as well.

I have a 2021 CASE IH 40 hp. Compact tractor which I assume is about equal to your tractor here. Do you think my tractor could power a 6' tiller or should I stick with a 5' to be safe?
Yeah it'll power it. Every once in a while I need to slow down when soil gets real heavy or deep but most of the time I don't feel underpowered at all.
I wonder if a few sprays of WD40 PTFE Dry Lube would help loosen that PTO shaft? I use that on my tractor/equipment and is doesn't seem to attract dirt as much as grease/regular lube, but does a good job of keeping rust away and keeping things loose.
I think the issue was/is paint on the new driveshaft. I took the tiller off the next day and noticed a bunch of paint chips. I plan on wire brushing and taking a file to the inside of the splines to clean it up.

yeah, I haven't had any issues with it. I haven't used anything more expensive, so I can't tell you what I'm missing. It gets done what I need it to.

I hate that little spring pin on the tiller shaft. Have trouble every year.
yes! getting the PTO connected is definitely the hardest part.
Time to get the seven foot rake out to level it out.

Where did you buy your tool storage box on the back of tractor?
The PTO shaft on my tiller is too short since I added the quick hitch LOL. Unfortunately a replacement PTO shaft is ridiculously priced so I have to take the quick hitch off to use the tiller, so the quick hitch is 100% pointless for me, back to the dealer that thing went. I have the tiller and a box blade, so having a quick hitch for an implement is completely useless LOL. Dealership didn't bother accounting for the quick hitch when they sold all the stuff to me, only one of several dealership complaints I have.
Word of warning...DO NOT accept anything, sign anything, or give any money until you have every single piece of equipment that you ordered...I made that mistake so now I have to come up with another $2500 to get the damn mid mount mower for my BX2680 thanks to my extremely unhonest salesman. Never wrote anything down, so of course I have no proof that in the $27k I paid the dealership that a mower should be with my tractor. Glad I have a lawn tractor so its not like I need a mower deck, but when I pay for something I expected it to be with the tractor. Now I need to find a different dealership because I won't return to the one I unfortunately bought the tractor from. Pretty much every implement/attachment I can get from Tractor Supply but the mower deck is a Kubota thing so have to deal with a dealership on that.
man, that sounds like a nightmare. Thanks for sharing your experience. If you haven't already, you might want to escalate that with Kubota directly. There should be a sheet in your paperwork with every item included in your deal, including serial numbers for each item sold. They have to track that in case there are any recalls or anything like that.
@@FlatCreekOutdoors That's the problem I have no proof, all I have is a paper that shows I bought a tractor, and roto tiller...even the pallet forks I was supposed to get and the box blade isn't even listed anywhere yet I paid for them...I go the box blade with the tractor and tiller, but the pallet forks they kept saying they couldn't find any so I contacted Messick's and ordered from them and never seen a refund or anything else from my dealer.
Needless to say there isn't any reason I'd go back to that dealership for anything, and I'll be doing the service work on it myself, couldn't trust them to get what I ordered, I'm not going to trust them to do maintenance on it either. I may try and talk with the other dealership nearby and see about working with them for service and repair needs if that need arises, but otherwise I'll stay clear of Kubota dealerships thanks to that huge expensive mess.
Get the speeco quick hitch no bushing required
It would probably have done better with the plow if you had rim guard and wheel weights on and in the tires.
Good morning! The rear tires on my tractor are loaded. Wheel weights probably could help with traction too, but if I was doing a lot of that kind of work, regular Ag tires would be better than these industrial tires for more grip. Thanks for watching!

Man, you need learn hiw to use equipment, you hurry to much without checking the stand. Also never get under a loader, you won't live long...
While I usually welcome criticism, there is nothing of value in your comment at all. Take a few deep breaths. I think the air is a little thin up on your high horse. To err is human. I didn't have to call out my mistake with the stand. I could have easily edited that out. Sometimes sharing a mistake helps others learn too. The loader posed zero threat. In the slim chance it failed and dropped, it would have fallen on the tiller, not me. Calculated risks were made, and the risk was extremely low.
