  • Today we take a look at my small flowered Vandas, which might be better suited for homes and small displays!
    🦋 More info below! 🦋
    Vanda orchids are generally big plants, which can be grown great bare rooted, or in open baskets. Most Vandas are kept hanging, but this style can be a bit tricky in homes, where space is an issue, even in front of a window.
    Smaller flowered Vandas compensate with the sheer number of flowers they produce. Some will open even 50 flowers at one time per spike!
    Some of these orchids can also produce multiple spikes, creating a more impressive show that a big flowered Vanda ever will!
    Ascocentrum orchids are small Vandaceous orchids which can stay quite small and are suited for pots and home window sills. The flowers are very tiny, but they are produced in great numbers! Neofinetias are very suited for home displays as well!
    Aerides and Rhynchostylis can grow as big as typical Vandas, but they are usually fragrant and produce some of the most impressive flower displays!

    Hello Miss Orchids and other readers,
    What is presented here as Ascocemtrum miniatum / Vanda miniata is in fact Vanda garayi. The real Vanda miniata is endemic to Java and extremely difficult to find outside South-East Asia. It has paler and veined flowers. Vanda garayi is sold by tons by Thai vendors but it labeled wrongly. In Indochina is Vanda garayi , exported in the West as miniata, and in Java is the rare, real and the one described as such by Lindley in 1913. Source : Martin Motes "Ascocentrum garayi", AOS Orchid Magazine, 2011, 144-145.

    • @vivaciousjo
      @vivaciousjo 3 года назад +1

      I concur. Miniatum is also fall blooming whereas garayi is a spring blooming species, ie. this "miniatum." The lip and color are also different on true species miniatum.

    • @bansoraya
      @bansoraya 3 года назад

      @@vivaciousjo Yes, exactly and also petals ans sepals don't have the same shape : they are rounded on garayi while more ovale, veined with a lighter orange on the real (and difficult to find out of Asia) true miniatum.

    I prefer the older names too. It seems like they're lumping orchids together to make them more marketable or (in their minds) easier for people to understand.

    • @sarrakitty
      @sarrakitty 2 года назад

      Ascocentrum's reclassification as a part of the Vanda genus was done on the basis of genetic studies, it doesn't have anything to do with marketing. The scientists who classify plants and the people who make a living selling/marketing plants are two VERY different groups of people. That's often why you see horticulturalists using old names that aren't considered scientifically accurate anymore!

    14:45 There are some truly blue orchids in nature like Disa graminilifolia, Disa purpurascen, Disa maculata and Disa longicornu, Epiblema grandiflorum. Also, a nice blue orchid that is also fairly easily available on the market is Thelymitra. Still, Rhyncostylis coelestis "Blue" is still a very beautiful plant, especially because it produces many more flowers than the other genuses named previously

    • @j.d.8075

      I have started a terrestrial collection and Thelymitra was the first genus I collected [bought] after Spathoglottis.

      The most truest blue orchid species is the blue vanda endemic to Assam, India and adjoining places.

    Hi Danny, I purchased a mokara Nora Blu, it looks like a vanda. Not sure if this orchid has to be potted or treat her like a vanda. I found Few information about this type of orchid.

    • @bansoraya
      @bansoraya 3 года назад

      It has to been treated as a Vanda with even more light. Former Mokara are not always easy to bloom any where else than the tropic due to this lack on sun but it is possible under right conditions.

    Lovely vandals . Any suggestions for a Vanda that is super dehydrated and no roots? I have seen some in garden centers that have the tops cut off. Does that help generate roots & growth? Any thoughts? Thank you .

      @@starlightvampire Sorry for you. I don't know where you live but I grow in tropical place and mine is quite easy to bloom. I grow it as a Vanda. As with many (former) Ascocentrum, the leaves become dotted with black points and turn a bit reddish when the plants receive enough light. On the under hand, one's have to be careful to not burn the leaves.

    • @starlightvampire

      @@bansoraya I live in Los Angeles where the humidity is usually 20% or below. Sunlight isn't an issue for me, but when I had my Ascocentrum, I wasn't using a humidifier yet in my home. I've learned 😅

    • @bansoraya
      @bansoraya 3 года назад

      @@starlightvampire Yes, sure in L.A. light shouldn't be problematic but to me 20 % humidity seems so low. I grow in Bangkok (but I am not Thai) where the plants receive their natural conditions. The former Ascocentrums and Vandas need much higher humidity. Most of the spikes will get dry if the plant produces some. I grow Vandas since 15 years under the tropic and I still learn. Good luck to you and continue with this humble state of mind ; this is the way to knowledge and gorgeous bloom. All the best.

    Hi danni, great video, I have some vandas too not mini ones, but i m not doing so well with them. I live in Greece which is also very warm at the moment., I do have them outside and I grow them in glass vases, I hose them down at least 2 a day. but still have dehydrated leaves. I dont know what else to do any suggestions??? Thanks and have a great day.

    • @bansoraya
      @bansoraya 3 года назад

      In Greece, you have wonderful year sun but be aware that Vanda needs a minimum of 50 % of humidity. Without it, pants dehydrated and die after a while.

      @@bansoraya Good morning,
      Oh no!! i dont have that humidity. in the summer the most is 25-30, so i have been doing the last couple of weeks aside from soaking their roots in fertilized water for at least an hour before i go to work everyday i spray them with the hose, this is done at around 8:30 in the moring, and as it get hotter i will do it again at lunchtime.
      I hope i can keep them alive, and of course once it hits 30-35 degrees and over they will come inside. thanks again for your input and have a great day. ps Ive had these vandas for about 4 years with no blooms. So this is my first bloom.
