    My Lord!
    For me, this song is absolutely packed with emotions. Geddy's voice.... Alex Lifeson on guitar .... and Neil was a MONSTER on the drums! I can't believe that he has been gome over 4 years now.
    Your reaction is great!

    True Rush fans love ALL Rush. Tired of haters hating on projects after Moving Pictures!!! There are so many (way too many to list) great songs on those albums! Thank you for giving these guys the respect they deserve!!!

      Yes, WE do!! I've been a Rush fan since 1975 and the release of Fly By Night. The weakest album (IMHO) was the next release in 1987, Hold Your Fire. Still a few great tunes on it. "Mystic Rhythms" closes the BEST rock album of 1985! 💜💜💜

      Exactly!!! I guarantee most people who say they hate everything post Moving Pictures have only listened to a song or two from the albums after MP.

    I embrace all the musical shifts Rush has delivered over the years, none more so than their 80's synth heavy productions. I always loved how full and melodic their music was during this period. A lot of my favourite albums were produced during the 80's. Hold Your Fire - Power Windows - Grace Under Pressure - absolutely incredible bodies of work.
    Make no mistake though, their heavy, progressive rock paved the way for all of this stuff and shows how they moved with the times.
    Great tune and thanks for your reaction Kristen.

      Lifelong fan here. It took awhile, but HYF is gaining respect. And I love how, within the Mario-esque landscape of Rush Love, there are pockets of fans who go against the norm ("Tai Shan 4 life, bitches!"). It's like, they are the Rush fan's Rush fan.
      Besides, how can you ever say Tai is the worst when "Dog Years" exists...🙄

    I love every era of Rush! Some may flame me for it, but I loved their synth era! Still get a chill every time I hear the opening of Subdivisions. Mystic Rhythms has long been one of my favourite Rush tunes. I love that they never stagnated their sound - they adapted, went with the times and experimented. Sure some things didn't work (as in I am glad they went back to 'heavier' guitar driven sound in the 90's, but they at least didn't stick with a formula! Look at their entire catalogue, and tell me what two albums (or more) sound identical - they don't. Stylistic, musical changes abound with these three masters!

    Hi. 49 year old drummer here. "Subdued" is very apt. In 1985 this song...the opening 16 bars...to my then 15 year old ears, fresh new drumsticks in one hand, Walkman in the other, Neil's drums were like the voice of God.
    30 minutes before my brain had been blown out the back of my head with the first chord of the entire album (and it is a motherf*&#@< of an opening chord) and whilst I was still scooping up my cerebellum with a piece of brain pan, Mystic Rhythms came up to bat...and it was the same feeling I had when I met my wife. It is an utter masterpiece of a song, yet hidden away in their catalog like an Easter egg at the end of the album. Only the fans made it that far, and were rewarded.
    Ive been saying for decades, if Rush hadnt worked out, Geddy would have gone into writing film scores. That was Rush's secret...they were theater folk (drama queens and grand presentations) at heart, and were experts at creating a spectacle. MR was a steady, calm oasis, textured and loaded to the rafters with emotion.

    Rush endured because of their ability to adapt and experiment . Naysayers are just that,naysayers. They missed a lot of killer performances during the mid-80’s to the last album. I had a friend once say that sometimes he might not like a Rush album when it would first come out,but like all their albums,they age well and listening back you realize how freakin fantastic they were.

    I stuck with Rush through thick and thin. Rush transitioned with the times falling into what was the current style in music and garments. I honestly didn’t appreciate each album as a whole after Moving Pictures but there were definitely highlight songs and I would listen to future albums in their entirety. This song though is so fantastic live. If you haven’t checked it out yet listen to Red Sector A. I won’t give anything away but your homework will be research the background of Red Sector A and then see why this song draws you in and really paints a visual picture. Stunning as always Kristin! ❤️

      Yes, I was just going to say this. I remember the show 1986. It was similar to nightline, but featuring Connie Chung. The into to the news show was mystic rhythms. I used to love hearing this.

    • @carriersignal
      @carriersignal Год назад

      Glad someone else remembers this. What they used for the intro was the first 43 seconds merged with the last part of the song starting at 8:14. People have to realize what this sounded like in 1985/86. We were all familiar with synths during that era, but nothing really sounded quite as otherworldly as Power Windows. It was the intro to the show 1986 that got me interested in Rush. At the time I had no idea it was them who wrote it and one night the local radio station just played the whole song out of the blue. I've been hooked on them ever since.

    The best song on power windows is Middletown dreams. About how people need to appreciate what they have, who they are with, and where they are at at the moment. "The middle age Madonna calls her neighbor on the phone, day by day the seasons pass leave her life alone, but she'll go walking out that door some bright afternoon to go and paint big cities from a lonely attic room".

    I think this may be the closest to a good MTV music video by Rush. IIRC, they didn't have a lot of luck making them. "Stick it Out" was not 80s goofy any more, but there wasn't a lot to it. And I don't mind the synth era. You still have Geddy slapping that bass, Neil beating those skins (er, and triggers), and Alex with his mandolin. 😉 But seriously, they're still crafting good and interesting songs, IMO. And this is a relaxed groove and not rockin', but that's fine too. I even admire something like Between the Wheels for how out there they went with it.

    _Mystic Rhythms_ is contemplative chill out time with Rush. The song became a favorite right away when I first listened to _Power Windows_ (and the same goes for when I first saw the video). The odd feel of the video makes more sense when you consider that Jerry Casale from Devo directed it. It's like going through some mysterious, weird curiosity shop.

    Yeah, they were good at it but I never felt that synth was their sound. Classic rush with just the guitar bass and drums was really what made them great. Stuff like Xanadu, 2112, and Hemispheres. Wow, I was in college when this came out...

    • @surfeit5910
      @surfeit5910 4 года назад +2

      And as a musician, I can tell you that their 70's sounds were "amateurish" compared to their 80's musicianship. As complex as they were, you always knew the sound they were going for and the structure they would use to get there in their early albums. By the mid 80's, the guitar got 100 times more complicated with the huge amount of sounds and styles Alex managed to pull out of it - acoustic, clean, distorted, overdrive, flange, chorus, delay, etc. yet LIfeson stepped back to allow the rhythm to carry the majority of their songs.
      Watch them play "Turn the Page" or "Mission" live (A Show of Hands) and you'll see what I mean by that complexity and the huge amount of sound they were capable of creating.
