Be a good or bad defense this woman has the right to exercise her 6th amendment right to self represent. And this judge mocking her and smiling is actually his attack on the Constitution by mocking the woman's right to self represent.

Can someone explain what's going on? He asked how she pleads. She says guilty. So the judge enters a not guilty plea. ??????

Judge Simpson is extremely experienced, and also tends to be kind to, and have some forbearance with clueless defendants. This clueless defendant either has a significant psychological impairment; OR she believes that she will be be fined, rather than incarcerated.I suspect the latter, as early on she 'corrected' Judge Simpson to say it was either a jail sentence and/OR a fine. Judge Simpson clearly does not believe she is competent to act as her own attorney OR to make informed legal decisions. As this case evidently must go to a higher court for final adjudication, the judge is doing his best to ensure she does not prematurely doom herself to a long sentence. Hopefully the next judge will ask for a competency hearing.

I can explain...Judge Simpson is in General District Court which handles low level crimes and misdemeanors. Had this process played out what would have happened was the court would have set the case in motion to have her then be sent to the Circuit Court which handles felony cases. Her pleading guilty right away simply skipped a few steps including the circuit court having to have her indicted on the felonies. Now, she is proceeding straight to circuit court with her initial required stand mute / not guilty plea where she can then plead guilty in the court that is legally allowed to handle these charges. For example, a murderer doesn't have his case decided in a traffic court which is a general district court although ALL criminal cases start there under the Constitution. It has to meet the burden of evidence in the lower court to move to the upper court which is part of the innocent until proven guilty aspect of our Constitution. Also, even if a defendant fast tracks their case and doesn't waive their right to a speedy trial the average defendant accused of 1 or more felonies will have around 6 to 8 court appearances before they ever get to their trial or plea deal sentencing. There are court dates for the arraignment and bond/bail, attorney appointed, notice of retention, discovery, multiple status update conferences ( where the judge has parties come in to see how the case is moving along, check on possibility of plea deal, etc, legal motions about what evidence is allowed and what evidence can be suppressed, etc.

It’s the system that is stupid.
She did something wrong and she is pleading guilty. They make her appear twice and still won’t let her plead guilty.
No wonder the court are so inefficient.
