Yes she could tell right away that he was off that huffing and using K2, those are very serious hypoxic substances and for a child or anybody to even use them, but let alone a child aged 13 a young person in their '20s, is heartbreaking. His dad comes off as so sharp-witted, I bet his son once was as well.

My parents were constantly calling the cops on me back when I would leave the house at age 13 and 14 due to undiagnosed autism and other issues, but it was an ongoing battle. The police don't do shit.

Doubt that's really going to change. He won't complete probation. He is going to jail and when he does he might get the full 20 years instead of only 6. That won't really matter because we you said, if he just did the 6 when he got out your right, he would just go back.
Unfortunately, the drugs have probably ended his life in the free world. The judge just delayed the inevitable.
I hope when he does get out he survives his freedom long enough to be put in custody.

Exactly what I was thinking. Many people do not realize that people with mental health issues, especially, like schizophrenia, are not actually drug addicts. They use drugs as medication to dumb down the symptoms of their illness and then that creates another whole host of problems but they are not drug addicts. And should not be looked down on

Every time she asked him if he understood, I was thinking “I doubt it,” but the work of the court has to go on. Whether he has the capacity to follow what he is to do on probation is another thing. He’s now permanently brain damaged from those dreadful synthetics he’s ingested, and his parents will have to take care of him, which will be hard work given the state of mental health services.

This one brings up some bad memories. Back in the early 80s when I was in high school it was this one boy who was popular with everybody. We used to hang out at the rec center with each other and he was one of those people nobody had nothing bad to really say.
After high School we were all run into each other here and there but once we turn 21 we would hang out more in our neighborhood since we had some really good clubs.
I had to have emergency surgery. When my friends came out to visit I had asked where is he at. Nobody wanted to tell me what was going on and I was getting mad and they finally told me what happened. At some point he started smoking PCP we don't even know how he ever got involved with that since there was nobody in our little group that did that.
So I'm thinking he's dead and my friends told me he would probably be better off if he died. Getting mad again I am why would you say something like that. Everybody said the same thing wait until you are recovered before going over to his house.
When I saw him he had no idea that any of us was there he could not speak any longer and he was eating from feeding tubes that his mother and his sister would do. He was completely brain-dead and since he did not die there wasn't a lot of options. His family could not afford to take him and put him in a nursing home for the rest of his life or even a rehab facility that might have been able to get him to start moving around.
About a year later he passed away. A lot of us believed that his mother and sister did something to end his suffering. None of us really question that we did not even want to open up that road.
Seeing this young boy with the way he could not stop smiling and his eyes did look weird. That sort of I look is what my friend had. I don't know how far medicine has come I'm hoping there's something might be able to do for him.
I do feel bad for his parents. If he doesn't come out any better than he went in their life is in for a big shock.
I apologize for anybody who's made it this far that it was this long of a message.

Talking to one's self isn't that unusual but his parents described it being to an unusual degree and starting when he was very young. If that's the case, it wouldn't be related to his drug use. Whatever the case, he needs mental help. Maybe he was born on "the spectrum" or something like that. I wonder how far he got in school (he's 25 now.) Boyd didn't ask that. Or if he was ever employed.

This is clearly schizophrenia. BPD as well. He developed these issues as a child and subsequently used hard drugs very early on to self medicate. This isn't a failure of him or the father. This is what happens when the American healthcare system fails its people. Anywhere else in Canada or Europe, he would have been sent to proper psychiatrist care and receive the proper anti-psycotic medication. Instead here we are, with uneducated people commenting below calling him a loser, selfish, a punk, etc. Its one thing to be a criminal addict, and its entirely another when its combined with cognitive impairment that wasn't detected before. Take this from a front line worker at an inpatient unit.

I don't see anybody commenting calling him a punk or a loser, you're the only one I've seen using those terms. All the comments I see that I've been scrolling past are sharing empathy and gratitude that he has supportive family members and that the judge is merciful. You have quite a narcissistic chip on your shoulder😂

Blame blame blame. It's all the healthcare system's fault. I'd say it's the parents if they noticed crazy behavior early on and didn't advocate for help for their child. Why do you think it's everyone else's responsibility to take care of someone else's child. Not mine!

Judge Boyd is basically doing HIS job by explaining to the young man what his options are.. she cares more about this mans journey, life and ultimately his legal situation than this useless lawyer who also seems to be in another universe with his own facial expressions.

@maryl234 Fortunately, neuro-genesis means new brain cells can and do grow. And neuro-plasticity can have other parts playing a role or new roles. It really looks like some schizo-affective disorder. And anti-psychotic meds may help. The family was too unsophisicated to recognise or do anything about it in his early life. Tragic. Too many people in prison for this exact reason.
