I love your advice on teaching adults! I am an adult dancer, and so often teachers don't take the class seriously since we are adult and won't be professional, and are there only for "fun". We love ballet and we are paying for the class in order to properly learn ballet and get the actual corrections!
So true! I am a BIG believer that any and all dancers deserve the same high-quality teaching, regardless of how 'good' they are expected to be. I've found that the high quality dance schools, with a very good pre-professional program, will often have a very good adult program
I agree! I don’t feel like I’m getting my money’s worth if you let me do whatever. I can put on a video at home and dance with it but what I’m needing is critique. That’s why I go to class.
Adult ballerinas want to be pushed - thank you for saying this, it is so true! You are such an inspiration!
Hi Kathryn - I am an adult ballet student, 69 yrs old (started at 26) and have worked hard to maintain my splits and to stay strong. Your classes and barres have helped me so very much, thank you! Would love to see even more tips for adult students, because you are so right, we go to class because we want to be there and to improve, but most instructors' attention goes to the kids. I'll never be a professional, but ballet has given me so much - every class I want to do more and more (correctly). I was fortunate enough to train with Olga Kostritzky when she first came to the US in the '70s - she taught, like you do, work ethic, diligence, patience , and respect for this glorious art form. She pushed me!Thank you Kathryn, your kind generous heart shines bright!
im so glad you mentioned not over correcting. in coaching we call this "paralysis by analysis" its very difficult not to do!
The adult thing is a whole video's worth, maybe you can do that sometime separately as well. They often intellectually understand what the body should do, but physically they aren't going to be able to execute at the level they have in their mind. So when they see in the mirror that it doesn't look the way that they know its supposed to, or when they can't pick up combinations quickly, they get frustrated. So with adult students I feel like its extra important to give clear and specific encouragements and focus them on just one or two corrections at a time so they can not get distracted by "all the things that are wrong" about where they are with their technique. Also more importantly, there are major safety issues for adult students that are different for young dancers. So modification options are important IMO, for example two demi-plies as an option to a grand plie in the case of bad knees. Not at all to "dumb things down" but to simply protect and respect more matures bodies and not push them too soon to do things that aren't necessary and can actually hurt them. Thanks for another great video! So excited for more on the other channel as your countdown continues!
As an adult I have to admit the diamond necklace idea sounds rather grand.
Natasha Estrada I might need to get some smiley stickers too ;)
It is a good idea, but I'm wondering; would it work for boys?
@@emilyadams9986 Yes of course it would! I've done this with my ballet students, all ages between 4 and 12 year olds. And the boys absolutely loves it, just as much as the girls, and it helps them with their posture
Kathryn, you are amazing :)
Since I was a child, I always wanted to learn ballet. Because of a heart disease, my parents never let me. I had many surgeries and the doctors said that I can start dancing as an adult. So I waited and waited. Now I am 21 years old and I can finally dance, but for 3 years now I can't leave my house for several reasons. It was and is awful.
Then I found your channel and your online classes. Finally, the dream came true! I still hope that I can take some classes at the local school one day. However, I cannot thank enough nor have any words at to express my gratitudes to you
Aurora 👏👏👏👏👏 I'm so happy for you!
Wow girl I hope your doing amazing💗💗
As an educator of 30 years, it was wonderful to hear you discussing 'developmentally appropriate' practices based on ages of the students and their goals. Your advice about the emphasis of the day is excellent! As a 63-year-old, I still love barre class and appreciate corrections. More than one or two at a time is too much for my brain. You are a wonderful asset to you tube!
As a teacher this is very helpful to hear. These things seem like they should be common sense but until you hear someone say it you don’t realize you aren’t actually doing it. So thank you, and you should do more videos on teaching!!
Thank you so much for this video Kathryn! I'm only 14 so I don't teach ballet yet, but I would absolutely love to in the future! I'll be coming back to this video if I ever get the opportunity to teach a class. So helpful!
Hi Kathryn- I just wanted to tell you, as a younger dancer your tutorials have helped me SO MUCH!!! You are a very inspiring dancer, and I hope you become very popular on RUclips so that more dancers can get help from you ❤
Adili Ben-Ari Same with me, Katie's videos, have been amazing for me, I've improved so much
Hi Katie,
I'm an adult Ballet student dreaming of teaching kids and adult beginners one day and this was so helpful. Especially the hell stickers and nacklaces are genius!
Thanks for all your hard work!
I love your tips! I tend to struggle finding the FUN teaching the younger ages. I also love "I'm a Ballerina Now" music for the little ones, if any other teachers are reading through the comments.
Love the theme of the day for older girls, I try to do the same thing, it feels so difficult to try to pick at one theme for only one hour long class a week for my students, not to mention the many levels in one class for older girls is hard to manage.
I'd personally love a teaching pointe segment! ☺️
Thank you so much for this video! I want to teach children ballet, but I did not start dancing until high school so I have never taken a class as a young child. Any videos on teaching different age groups or on teaching different things (e.g. placement, musicality, epaulement) would be extremely helpful.
a preschool just hired me to teach literal 3 year olds and this video helps so much. thank you so much
Even though I'm not a ballet teacher, this video allows me to know how to teach in a fun way if I am able to teach ballet in the future (even though I'm not in ballet but I really want to). Thank you so much! You really inspire me to take on ballet in October at the age of 16!❤❤
I just love how helpful and insightful you and your videos are, honestly almost all your advice is helpful for me
When I first started teaching some IDK 20 years ago. There weren't all of the resources we have today. I wish someone back then would have told me to read up on childhood development and how my preschoolers actually learn. Because what you say is so true - how you teach is 100% dependent on the age and skill of the dancers. It would have saved me quite a bit of classes where I wanted to rip my hair out because I couldn't get my preschoolers to listen LOL. Thankfully I realized on my own that I would need to do some research about early child development and now I love teaching the preschoolers. I love your smiley face ideas and the diamond necklace ideas. Great Tips! Thanks
yes, teaching and loved this, gave me confidence and ideas ,thank you
thank you! this was super helpful. I teach a lot of ballet, and it's definitely easy to get into a routine of what to look for to correct.
I loved what you said about adult students. That's so true! Thank you!
Wow thank you for confirming these things for me. It's so great to know I'm not alone in these methods.
Thank you so much for this! I really want to teach ballet, and these tips will be so helpful so I can be a good teacher.
AMAZING video!!! So so useful. Thank you a lot Katie 💖💖
I love all of your teaching videos! I am planning to complete my ballet teaching diplomas next year and watching videos like this make me so excited to get started 😊 thank you xx
I really love your advices, Kathryn, you are my ballet guru. I don’t have words to thank you for every video you have made. A big hug with lots of love ❤️❤️❤️
I would love more teaching videos!! I teach all age ranges so this was so helpful!
Thank you so much for this video!! I especially love the smiley face idea! 😊 I plan to start assisting in classes this summer
Great tips! I loved this video and I completely agree with you about not overwhelming our students. More videos for teachers please! thank you ❤
Fabulous ideas! Thank you!
Teaching my first ballet class tonight. Thanks for the thoughts!
Dear Katheryn, Wow - such a wonderful and informative video! Thank you so much for sharing your valuable information and breaking it down into three different groups. I enjoy all of your videos so much!
Kathryn, thank you so much! This video was super helpful! I have danced all of my life but am just starting my first year of teaching. This video makes me feel more confident in what I am doing and opened my eyes to what I could be doing. If you could do another video on helping girls who are competitively trained transition into serious ballet that would be amazing! Again thank you so much!!
You look STUNNING in this video. This is really helpful as well!
Thanks, Katie! I am going to be teaching dance in the summer and this is really helpful :)
I'm 17 and I taught my first class today. I'm glad to know that my teaching is well on track according to your standards. The teacher who should have taught the lesson is a bit of a nut who started an RAD Interfoundation class without knowing the syllabus. I'm planning to teach anyway, so it's all good experience. Thank you!
Totally correct. I am a school teacher and also correct what I am teaching, not everything. When it becomes ingrained then I want them to do it that way and might add a little correction if I see a problem after that. Love the diamond necklace idea. Spot on for children
This video is amazing Kathryn! I teach ballet to 2-4 year olds and 6-8 year olds and these tips are amazing! It's also exciting hearing you talk about tips and tricks that I already use :D!
Thank you so much! These were some excellent tips that I needed as I'm about to start a new fall season teaching a range of ballet students (toddlers, kinder, 8/9yo, pre-teens, and teens) and I am the type where I definitely tend to over-correct so this was a wonderful reminder. :)
Thanks so much for sharing the smiley face and diamond necklace tips. I’m always looking for ways to make my classes more fun for my students 😊
Thank you Katie!
I teach preschoolers and this was so helpful! I will definitely borrow some of those ideas. Thank you, Katie!
So good 😊! Wish I had this years ago. When I used to teach I pretty much got thrown into the whole thing so it was a learn as you go experience for me! Many adventures ❤️😊🎉😎
LOVE this video thank you katie! I am so bringing in some "diamonds" in the fall. I teach at a very laid back just for fun school and my 10-12 beginner students are the hardest by far. Our recital is around the corner and I am doing absolutely everything I can think of to help them prepare for the routine I just can't get them to help themselves...or practice anything at home 💔
Katie such wonderful advice for teachers! I taught jazz, tap and musical theatre and can definitely relate everything you were saying to those subjects too. Spot on with the adult dance experience. Most of my teachers are current company members, former company members and faculty at our performing arts university. They demand so much of us are we love it! The standard of our classes has really improved over the past few years and a good adult ballet program is developing.
am a ballet teacher and thanx 4 ur advices. . am gd at dealing with children but I needed to make sure of some points .. thank u
Great video as always. As a teaching assistant this is great advice.
thank you so much
that was helpful.. love you and your videos
I appreciated your advice on age breakdown. I had actually tried the stickers on the shoes and spent more time having to replace stickers that kept falling off lol. However, I put them on the younger age group than you suggested. I am looking forward to trying the 6-8 year olds with stickers. I think I was being too ambitious with the littlest ones. Great video. Thank you.
Thank you so much for doing this video! I am always looking for ways to improve my teaching. When my summer classes start up I am definitely going use these tips you shared. :-)
You are such a great teacher!
this is my first year of teaching & this helped a lot thank you!
So helpful!!! I do work study (I co teach ballet) and this is very useful! Thank you! Also your makeup is very pretty
Great great video!! Thank you very much!
Yes, it did help. Thank you!
Thank you for doing this video!!
Definitely a help! Thank you.
Please make a series of this!
Very helpful! Thank you
Thank you I love your advice it has helped is alot in Uganda and have seen it work.at our academy because we have been trying to motivate and do awareness.thank you.
I'm a young teacher from Australia 🇦🇺 Thank you, this video was very helpful 😊
Thank you Kathryn for your Amazing Dance Videos! I've been dancing Ballet for 20 years now and teaching for almost 10 and watching your videos inspires me to do more and be more not only for myself, but for my students also. I teach the pre teens and teens and one age you didn't mention was the Teen group (both for those who have professional ability and those who will NOT be professionals in the dance world because of physical ability or motivation). What would also be helpful is some practical discipline and classroom etiquette that can be applied for students who don't attend a public or private school setting. Thanks
Great video! I have been asked to teach adult ballet class and I was feeling nervous and unsure of myself. Your advice has really helped motivate and reassure me! Thanks for the great tips, I'm so going to buy "diamond" necklaces and smiley stickers at the dollar store tomorrow!
EXCELLENT ADVICE. THANK YOU.
I stopped dancing before the age of 10, and my only memories of class are using the same cassette tape for Barre for multiple years. every year we just got through a little more of the tape. I don't know a lot about dance, but I know a bit about kids, and there's no way the same tape should have been used for 4 year olds and 8 yr olds, let alone should a 4 yr old have been guided by a pre-recorded tape. thank you for spreading such good information about teaching kids!
Great video. Since finding your channel, I have been doing basic barre everyday for about 5-10 minutes. Your channel has encouraged me to at least move around and doing something that can a benefit. I even restarted doing Tai Chi again. :)
Your message is so true about adult students. Please remember that "fun" adult students may include ballet dancers in a company or visiting dancers.
I think my ballet class as a kid would have been better without someone mentioning about turnouts. To this day - I'm not quite sure what that meant as a 7 year old.
Thank you for this video Kathryn! I teach a wide age range of students, and all of your tips were really helpful, especially the sticker idea for explaining turnout.
Brooke Y. Where I teach we tell the babies how the royals used to have big diamonds and gems on their heels, and them put stickers on. "Oh can I see your diamonds please?"
This was extremely helpful!
I sooo agree with you regarding adults, because I teach adults and I really push them and they learn amazingly fast and make spectacular progress!
I'm thinking about applying to teach at a new dance company opening near me next year and i don't have a lot of experience with dancers under the ages of 8 years old, and oh my god this helped weirdly! like i did the smiley face on the ankle when i was 11 AND I LOVE THE DIAMOND NECKLACE IDEA OMG THATS BRILLIANT!
As a ballet teacher this video was awesome thank you
I volunteer helping my teacher with her youngest class (3-5). I love it :) Your makeup is beautiful, by the way xx
Girl, you re soo good!
Bless you! This is helpful! I'm at a new school where they really want us to break things down. And I panicked at the thought of how to create an 1 1/2 class with Demi and grande plies. I tend to whirlwind forward and am learning how to slow things down. I'm just uncertain how to break the class up, keep it engaging especially for middle and high school students.
Kathryn thank you so much for the adult class advice, I hope you can do more videos for adult beginners!! 💕💕
that would be amazing!!
i also loved the tips for adult ballet :)
I agree, i think anyone who started late wants to be corrected and worked hard! i certainly do...
This video has helped me so much I teach from the age 7-18 this video is amazing
Hi, Kathryn! I'm not related to ballet in any way but I love to watch it and after this video I am probably going to take the step and look for an academy. I've just turned 39 and I know I'm too old to become a dancer, but I'd love to try it anyway, if only for the exercise. And your're right: a friend of mine joined a dance class and he's totally demotivated because they're not doing technique at all. They're just moving around looking for "natural movements", as they call it, which may be fine for the first couple of classes but not for the whole course. Oh, and I love your videos! (Sorry if I’m not clear enough but I’m Portuguese and English isn’t my first language.)
David Pinheiro i couldnt even tell that you arent a native english speaker!as a life long dancer, i can tell you that anyone can do it at any pointe, and you should definately try it!
David Pinheiro I am 37, and I am enjoying beginning ballet. It's a fun challenge!
Hi David, just wanted to chime in that you might enjoy looking at Dave Tries Ballet, a wonderful blog by an adult male dancer that addresses issues that aren't often addressed by most ballet sources: www.davetriesballet.com/ He's a funny guy and has shared his journey for a few years now.
thanks for another great video! I am an adult student and totally identify with what you say - we do want to be pushed.
i really love your videos thak you so much, thanks to your videos i get better ideas with lots of techniques, honestly my teacher is not that great. so thank you
YOURE A LEGEND KATHY!! 😍😍
I am a teacher and I think the smiley faces and diamond necklace ideas sound like fun for the kids!
I love the diamond necklace idea! We got told we had super long earrings on that we had to show off (shoulders down, long neck) 😂😂
Thank you so much for posting this! I find your videos extremely helpful! Where I teach we require most students to take ballet in order to advance into other classes, as it is obviously fundamental to becoming a great dancer. Do you have any tips on keeping older students engaged and focused throughout class? I find that I have some students that simply go through the motions without focusing on combinations and corrections simply because 'ballet isn't their favorite' while others are dedicated and hard working throughout. This is of course something that happens often in most situations, but I would love to have all my students enjoy ballet as much as I do and see the timeless beauty of it! If you have any advice or tips I would be forever grateful! ☺️
thank you! good reminders ;)
Hi Katy, thank you so much for this video. I teach children aged 2-7 and love your happy face idea! I will definitely be using that with some of my groups! It's my dream to teach adult beginners and love you philosophy on teaching adults. Thank you so much for this video! :)
Thank you ❤
Thank you for the tips on teaching adults!! Love your videos. Can you do some more fundamentals? Ballet walks slow and fast, ballet runs. How to break down for beginners.
thanks for this video, you are right on many levels.
i am starting out as a teacher and have been thinking a lot about things and trying them with my students.
explaining exercises: make it interactive by checking if they understood. talk them through the exercise. allow some freedom of interpretation but not to the point of carelessness. maintain a good and safe working environment where students can be confident.
i try to make my corrections a positive statement, so i avoid saying "don't do this" but rather "do this" - it's much clearer what you expect of them. when you see a correction doesn't land, try explaining it in a different way. are you using words that don't help, then quit talking and show, or physically put a student in the correct position. or let them try before starting the music. sometimes i give a correction before the exercise like something to focus on. with adults, yes treat them like adults, and treat them like serious students. be respectful, a correction should never be an insult but a way to help them improve.
with children i find it harder, i tend to be too serious so the ideas for playfully explaining technique are very helpful.
Tips to teach placement! And to plan the class and music!
hey Katie!!! Can you please please do a video on how to make the most out of every ballet/dance class? I don't get a lot of corrections and i'm trying to improve but it's hard to figure out what to focus on. thanks, i love your videos!!!!
This video was amazing! My dream is to teach ballet to itty bitties or adults! This was so helpful!
I'm so glad you said those things about adults students! I had a teacher
who was always telling us not to worry if we got something wrong, "it's
only ballet". I know she means well but I find it kind of demeaning.
Watching this again as i'm starting an internship at my dance studio and will be teaching 9+ year olds later in the dance year
More on this subject, please Kathryn. I definitely want to teach one day so anything on how to structure a decent class would be good. How do you cope if your mind goes blank when setting an exercise?
Kathryn, I've been doing your videos, and I might enroll in an in-person ballet class for adults once the pandemic is over, but I'm a bit self-conscious about it, because I'm reasonably fit (before coronavirus, I was teaching yoga and Aquafit classes and doing karate, and I still work out regularly now), but I'm also 36 and curvy. So, in the meantime, I've been having fun dancing with you at home, with sock feet and the back of a chair as a barre. I want to say I wouldn't care what people thought of me, but I probably would, if I walked into an adult dance class full of twiggy teenagers and early twentysomethings.
SO helpful! The adult class advice was great. Being so much younger than a lot of my adult ballet students is a struggle; I always end up being a little intimidated. But knowing that pushing them to do their best and improve is reassuring. Thank you!
As an adult ballet student, my favorite teacher ever was younger than me and, in pushing me, sometimes went as far as giving me a slightly harder combination. Don't be intimidated! It's not about your age. It's about sharing your knowledge of ballet with people who are there because they love the art form and want to enjoy it
Hi Kathryn! I'm a huge fan, and you are my inspiration!!! I'm so excited for your wedding and the move, and I know your really busy, but I was wondering if in the near future you could do another favorites video!? Also, my Q&A question is: who did you consider your closest friend at NYCB??
You should make a tip video for ballet class demonstrators 💗
Could you do a video on lesson planning and how to make combinations and barres and what sort of music to use for different things? I've been thinking more about maybe becoming a teacher after college or maybe having a dance company and that would really help 💖💖
