I remember playing this many years ago, long before I was into board games like I am now. It was my first co-op board game. I remember really caring about the other players' turns, especially the tension in dice rolling.
Now that I've been reintroduced, I think I'll get a copy! I have some friends who would really like a lightweight co-op dice-rolling Lovecraft board game.
Thank you for featuring easily available, still in print games. It seems like every channel is nothing but sponsored Kickstarter videos of games that won't be released for another two years, or games that are 3-figures on the secondary market.
That's the rule of the channel really. Asides from a few exceptions here and there (Mostly for Garphill games as they are locals), i insist the games either be in print or be on their say to stores before i cover them.
Someone is goign to tell me that elder sign is actually 1-8 players, and while it says that on the box. It's utter nonsense. Playing elder sign with 8 people would be farcical. So while the printed number is that, i've picked a much more realistic player count for the game. Anyway, Cthulhu Yahtzee adventures, not much more to say.
Would you be able to share why? I recently purchased the game, partly because of it's high player count
@@juliusblaze The implication is, I think, is the immense downtime, and agency for each player would get dramatically reduced at a higher player count.
Great game, have all the expansions. Played it loads solo when I got into the hobby a while back, seeing this video makes me want to go back & play more of the stuff I never got around to completing
The first modern game I bought and even after playing many other games, it still is my favorite.
I have the core and a few expansions. I wind up trying to mod it almost right away when playing solo (have the dice symbols mean more, extra exploration actions, an extra resource to spend, danger between room spaces, a few other things), but maybe the light and quick feel works better in mixed groups where you're cheering each other on. Nice having all that strange, baroque game art in tiny boxes, I will say.
Finally, a game I've played many times :) I've enjoyed Elder Sign (and big agree about the amazing phone app), but I sort of lost my taste for it after the second expansion. Casual gamers seem to find the basic game challenging but I've heard "serious" games say it's too easy, so it seems like the difficulty ramped up with the expansions. Unseen Forces was fine, but I found that Omens of Ice escalated the difficulty so high that I just didn't even want to play it any more. Obviously I can separate the decks and go back, but it sort of soured my enjoyment of the game as a whole.
One of the first board games I bought. Didn't really like it then but will try again after watching the video.
One of the greatest games of all times

Just wondering what you would recommend getting first out of branch and claw vs jagged earth?
Love your work
Branch and claw. Its a much smaller box and to me, really completes the game. JE on the other hand is a lot to digest at once.
@@3MBG Thanks for the reply and for your channel introducing me to SI in the first place! It's my all time favourite now :)
Someone could explain the curator reference at the end? No clue, never played this game 😊
He's a particular tough encounter card with very bad consequences. You can lose the game just because of failing his mission over and over again. And his smug face is there, every time you fail.
You mixed up the names of the Terror and Peril glyphs.
Oops, thats very much an accident then
One of my favorite solo games.
This is one of the games for which 1-2 expansions is a must have.
While in some of those games the "mandatory" exp. add variety or balance options, here the core game is just too easy.
It's important that for this reason the core game only has a 6.97. Below 7 is not an elder but a bad sign. ;-)
Now checking the expansions, they are have about 7.6-8.0 which is a huge jump, BUT it's reasonable.
To me the base game still is a 7.0, most expansions are about 7.75.
We've played the core set numerous times. It's one of my wife's favourite games. What would be a good first expansion to get?
Unseen forces, the first one
@@3MBG Thank you! 🙏
Wait there are people that actually like dice? Who are these lucky people?
I'm a big believer in probability over luck. I win a disproportionate amount of dice games and i'd like to think its not just dice rolls.
I'm glad Im not the only one that hates the Curator.. That guy is awful 😆
Steph literally said to me as i was editing the video "do you hate on the curator, cause screw that guy".
No he's a dick for sure , the only character that can take him is the librarian cause she can complete more than one task per roll
Really? this game is 12 bloody years old.
And? It's a board game, not a loaf of bread.
They didn't stop making bread
It's still in print my dude, or at the very least, still available for sale direct from the publisher. Most other channels in board gaming are obsessed with FOMO and the latest releases. I occasionally like to look at older games. Considering we covered backgammon a few months ago, this ones from this century at least.
Anyway, you can buy a brand new, freshly baked copy here shop.asmodee.com/elder-sign-sl05
I appreciate the heads up and the vids. Sorry and thanks.
The PC version is still going strong.
