  • I'm going to outline a 2005 and newer axle swap on an OBS Ford pickup in this video. The swap is completed enough on the truck in the video to demonstrate the install. I've logged over 200,000 miles on my other truck that has been 2005+ axle swapped without issues, and the truck in the video is done the same as the other one I did 13 years ago. If you found my video and/or description helpful please like and subscribe to the channel for more OBS content!
This video is directly showing the lowest you can be on an 05+ Swap using unmodified OEM Components. There are a million ways you can configure this swap, but this way is using as many OEM Components as possible. This way, when you purchase a rolling chassis, it gives you the ability to use as many parts as possible without having to buy more parts elsewhere. It also gives you a great baseline to start with, as the swap gives a little bit of lift, so you'd be able to adjust your height, up or down, based on your needs by purchasing other suspension components such as lift coils, or lowering coils etc.
If you're looking for a specific piece of information related to this video, please comment, and I will respond with an answer for you, please browse the comments for a question before asking.
    Some details about the swap:
-2005 to 2016 Axles are the only ones with a VSS in the rear axle.
-All bolts are 1/2" for bracket installation.
-The 99-04 Leaf springs are not required for the swap, you can run your OBS leaf springs, or any setup you'd like.
-The Transfer case is also not required, but then you're requiring a conversion joint (Neapco 2-3050) for the front, and possible driveshaft modification, and the rear driveshaft will need a flange (Spicer 3-2-1859, for a 1350 joint) for the rear axle installed on the driveshaft.
Something to keep in mind when purchasing pre-built parts, and their track bar mounts will be designed to use their respective coil buckets.
SKY Coil Buckets add 1" of lift
RYD Coil Buckets add 3" of lift
If you decide to purchase a Track Bar Mount:
    SKY: www.skysoffroa...
    RYD: www.rydmotorsp...
PMF Track Bar: (Choose lowered if using OEM Coil Buckets)
    www.pmfsuspens...
Ill cover the transfer case install, and rear leaf install in another video, as those aren't required for the swap.
For the 2005-2007 Steering box, You'll need the following information, the power steering line details are setup for a truck with hydroboost.
    M14x2.0 - 140mm Bolts required (3 required)
9/16” Drill Bit for frame holes
Gates 365892 Pressure Hose for Hydroboost (05 Superduty)

Gates 365930 Pressure Hose for Hydroboost (92-97 F-superduty)

-Remove Booster side nut from Gates 365892, set aside.
-Install Booster side nut from Gates 365930 onto Gates 365892 Hose and flare.

-Install Booster side nut from Gates 365892 onto Gates 370660 Return line and flare.

You have a great informational video. The overwhelming bent for these conversions favors the lifting of the truck. Thank you for recognizing the needs of those who wish to maintain a sane center of balance for highway driving. I concur with your (and, obviously, Ford's) recognition of the superiority of coil over leaf spring suspension. Still, I remain disappointed with the move to the Super Duty axles with their metric bolt pattern and [front] unit bearing hubs. In my experience, traditional rebuildable/greaseable bearings are superior to unit type.

Doing this swap for the benefit of a solid axle and better ride justify it IMO, everything else is a bonus, I converted my 2wd and this was essentially the same cost as an OBS D60 except better in so many ways. otherwise its a plain looking truck kept it as low as possible lol, still fits in the garage.

Great video. I'm not using RYD because they have horrible customer service. I actually found a guy out of Arizona, Blowing Diesel Designs, who offers what I feel is the best designed "kit" if that's the route folks want to go.

I’ve seen multiple “in-house” kits offered by guys over the years, and I’m not lumping the one you recommended into this because I haven’t seen it. But, the ones I have seen have been poor quality and poor customer service. So bad to the point that people never got their products and the products that did get sent out weren’t trust worthy. It would be nice to see some more quality components show up on the market. RYD has its pitfalls, that is true, which is why I recommended the SKY one in this video.

I’ve always done 1/8” toe in. And I have the trucks set at 4.5° negative caster if possible. Otherwise, the factory spec is around 2° negative.
If you’re wandering bad, you may have something worn out like a steering box.

Super informative, thank you for sharing. Are there any benefits of using any particular year of axles ranging from 05-16?

    • @GarrettsOBSGarage
      @GarrettsOBSGarage  Год назад +2

There are subtle differences between the years. 05-07 is my favorite year range because the coil buckets on the frame are flat, in 2008, they added a large dimple on the back of the bucket which needs removed to use them on the OBS. The rear axle shock brackets bolt on, which makes it easier to flip the one forward. The steering box, should you use it, bolts right up to the OBS steering shaft. I also like the way the front sway bar mounts to the axle. So the 05-07 is the most desirable in my opinion. However, the rear pinion bearing in that era can be problematic due to its size.

  • @OBSessed97

nice video… why didn’t you keep the old 94-97 manual transfer case? i thought you could keep that and not have to change?

    • @GarrettsOBSGarage
      @GarrettsOBSGarage  6 месяцев назад

The reason for the change was to run the 05+ front driveshaft. The 1356 from an F350 isn’t very hard to find, but the front driveshaft is. The 4407 for an F350 is very difficult to find. So, to run the 05+ shaft, I wanted a front flat flange on the transfer case. So it was easier to swap to the 99-04 transfer case.

      No cutting involved!
And I would NEVER use OBS coil spring mounts with SD springs. The top of the spring and retaining system is completely different and in my opinion unsafe to use the SD coil in the OBS bucket.

    • @GarrettsOBSGarage
      @GarrettsOBSGarage  Год назад +1

So, its a matter of preference for the box. If you decide to use the OBS box, you have to have your pitman arm reamed out. Which can be an issue if you don't have a machine shop to do it for you. RYD Sells the pitman arm already reamed if you decide to go that route. I've been told that the 05 Box has a little more "throw", and turns sharper, and also turns faster than the OBS box. I haven't driven the truck with the 05 Box enough to get a good feel for it yet.
If you choose to use the 05-07 box, you have a couple modifications to do. My instructions are setup for the hydroboost setup, since all of my trucks are hydroboost. I haven't done one with a vacuum setup. This is how I did the lines on the truck in the video, and I haven't seen what others have done to complete this task, but I know that this works.

The goal isn’t coils. The goal is bigger brakes. Better turning radius. Better ride. Better tire wear. It also opens up the door for much better options in the aftermarket mass produced suspension components. You also end up getting a disk brake rear axle also doing the swap. The solo kit isn’t bad, but it’s not cheap and you’re still dealing with the Dana 50, and pivot brackets.

Basically, you’d want the rolling chassis, but if you’re looking at only parts from the chassis.
      Coil buckets
      Radius arm mounts
Steering box (if you choose). 05-07, 08+ is more difficult to use.
Then obviously your axles and attached parts like steering and track bar and wheels. If you choose to use sway bars, you’ll need those as well. The driveshafts are a plus to have so you can use flanges or the front shaft as a whole. If you want to do the transfer case swap, then you’d need that too.

I haven't driven this truck much at all, since it's not anywhere near completely ready to go, but on the other truck I did this to, I've logged about 250,000 miles on that since the swap. An RSK with SD springs on OBS axles does not compare to the 05+ swap in terms of braking, steering, or handling. Even the 05+ swapped 1999 truck I did was a lot better. The owner said it drives like a brand new truck. He's had quite a few newer Fords, so he'd know.

@@GarrettsOBSGarage Sweet, thanks for the info. I am going to go ahead with the 05 option ! Your channel is a wealth of knowledge. Im almost through all the videos ..
I have done a lot of research but I still think I have two questions, if you have a second -
I am going to try to do this on the cheap, but that being said I still need custom parts such as the 05 compatible pitman arm and track bar mount. I think those are two things i cant get around (unless you have any suggestions). It says the track bar and pitman arm on RYD is set up for 0"-3" so i think that should work with the stock track bar ? I guess there is only one way to find out for sure..
Secondly is if you have ever done this with a zf-5 ? They say you need to buy a replacement cross member but its I would like to make my own or cut up the existing one, the $630 seems overpriced
      Thanks !

I believe I have the pitman arm you need. I’d have to look in my stash of parts, but I want to say I bought one or two and then went to the SD box. I can look if you want me to and I’d sell it for less than what you’d pay for a new one.
As far as the track bar mount, the SKY one was probably the best bet back when I made this video, but as I hear it RYD has improved their process. The SKY one is setup to use the original track bar but only if you use their buckets which add 1” of lift. I used the RYD and I had a 0”-3” adjustable track bar on a 2” lift and I had to shorten my track bar for some reason with their track bar mount on OEM buckets.
So, if you use the OEM 05+ buckets, you’ll NEED an adjustable track bar for lowered applications unless you do at minimum a 1” lift on SKY. If you go more than 1”, you’ll need an adjustable track bar for a 0”-whatever (lifted). I don’t know what the RYD would need, and the best bet is to call and ask them.
I had a ZF truck here last week with the RYD crossmember in it. I didn’t install it, but the guy who did said it sucked to get all lined up, but it’s very engineered and looked decent and fit nice. You can try and build your own, but you have to completely move it out of its original position and have a way to make something structural to hold the transmission and also avoid other things like the driveshaft and exhaust. So, while the crossmember is a little pricey, it’s probably worth the money once you factor in the headache of trying to build your own and make sure you have proper height, and alignment, and clearance.
The issue is, the radius arm mounts occupy the same space as the ZF crossmember, so you have to move it to a totally different spot.

@@GarrettsOBSGarage Definitely a lot of help, i really appreciate your videos, and your responses !
RYD claims the track bar mount works with 0-3" so i think i will try that, the BDD has adjustments built into the mount which may be handy. I think i will try to keep my costs down by avoiding buying a track bar
I think my best options are RYD or Blowing Diesel, They both have good reviews and are easier to import into Canada. They both claim to work with 0-3" lift so thats what im after.
I would be very interested in buying the pItman arm, name your price ! Is there a good way we can message ? or an email i can contact you at ?

Will that work on a gas e4od. With a 1356 transfer case

It’s an NP271. Here is a link to a video covering the transfer case installed in the truck.

Yes, you can use the NP271 where the 1356 was. Your shift linkage may be different in length than the one I used because my truck had a 4407, and the driveshaft will also need the specified front yoke to mate to the transfer case and the proper length as well.

There’s a company that makes a flat flange for the 4407 for 120 dollars

The 4407 in this truck needed rebuilt, and I paid 200 for a the 271. The 4407 is too hard to get parts for, and if you do find them, they are expensive. I looked around for flanges and what not, and I wasn't too happy with my findings, so I swapped it. Where did you find that flange?

High angle driveline made mine and funny thing in my area the 271s are hard to find I have 2 of them out of the 20 plus parts trucks I’ve got but I probably have 6 4407 tcase setting around

I’ve heard of HAD. But, never had dealings with them. They don’t advertise stuff like that though. You’d have to call and request it.
Me and another guy spent about 2 months trying to find an F350 4407. The F250 4407 is plentiful. If you find an OEM F350 yoke, you’ll pay out the nose for that, they sell locally for 150-200 when they show up. I’ve seen them for 250 online from used and new retailers. Then you’d need the F350 front shaft also, which is what I was going for. The DC front shaft. Couldn’t find a used one around anywhere, and a new one was 500 bucks. That’s why I recommend the 271. But if you can’t find one. Then you’re kinda stuck then.

The 350 yokes are a pain to find I got very luck and purchased a f350 parts truck for one of mine with a very good shape front shaft the 271 looks like a great swap I honestly never thought about it one of my personal extended cab long bed 4x4 truck 96 I 05 axle swapped it I ended up using the 2005 crew cab short bed 4x4 6.0 rear driveshafts right in place of mine except I had to get the 1410 to smaller tcase pilot hole for the 4407 tcase but lengths where perfect

    • @GarrettsOBSGarage

That’s awesome you got the right length driveshaft like that. The SD shafts are usually a little off from the OBS ones. That’s why I suggest the 271 vs trying to find an F350 4407.
To answer your other question you asked. No
