Im going to make a character that uses thaumaturgy to make a distant thunderous rumble and lightning flash at opportune moments. "Are you okay?" "No. Not since... the incident" *thunder and lightning*
I allow creative uses of this spell and prestidigitation. For instance, bloody tears, wailing instead of whispers, etc. My tiefling sorcerer uses this spell to great effect when he wants to make an entrance or a point
I am trying to remember a movie, where there is a pair of grifters that wander into town. One is the face and the other is the "special" effects. I was think about that movie when I considered this spell. Have one person on stage and another in the crowd casting This spell is so fun. Though not as wildly player interpretive as Prestidigitation you can still do much with Thaumaturgy. There are so many ways to get this spell since it is just a cantrip A town guard carrying around a torch or a lantern can communicate quite a fare distance with just the light and how the light changes. Red = Danger. Green = All is well. You can have the Flickering be some type of modifier like holding the shift key. For thieves they can have some obtuse way of communication. Like Whispers is the place is unguarded. Pigs oinking is heavily guarded place. You could have a whole sub language with just sound effects. Apply that "sub language with just sound effects" to someone that is born mute or had their voice taken by some magic. This is one of those spells that reward creative thinking players. Well with some DM buy in of course.
Had a game where this was used like 5 times during a boss fight. Thing is, it was an Assassin type boss (deadly in both melee and range, main defense was disengagement and stealth) in an old castle. So our wizard just kept using this to close off sight lines and force the Assassin into predictable actions that we could ready actions against. The power of the doors. Could've done it without Thaumaturgy, but that would risk putting someone in stabbing range.
Without a doubt this is a player spell (+5). It has good worldbuilding and decent creative uses (+2). So this is a 7/10 in my books (Also like ceremony this is an autoinclude for any cleric build). Have a nice day AEther
i like that baldurs gate included this ans gave it a use, but thaumaturgy applied to literaly *all* intimidation checks even to people who woudnt be impressed by a cantrip alwaysed bugged me.
+1, I found the series late in but I’ve been having a blast going back and watching older ones (and watching these as they come out!!) actually one of my favourite series on all of RUclips
Interesting. You gave Least Wish(Prestidigitaion) a 5 at the time(hope you reconsider). I happen to agree with your analysis, definitely a flavor pick, less practical options out of the gate than Least Wish but there are some, including but not limited to bumping up the performance of somebody elses illusion or even your own in select circumstances. Cleric is the only full class that gets this but plenty of Races and Feats can grant it, and of course multiclasses. Considering uses, flavor, and accessibiltity, 7/10
One of my personal favorite flavour spells, but then again, I did play Cleric a lot back in my 5e days, so I might be a TOUCH biased. Easily my favourite cantrip.
Kinda think it should be open to all fullcasters. Like why do Bards not have this cantrip? Always got to have a cleric in the background doing the show effects?
And I don't disagree! I think Thaumaturgy and Prestidigitation could just be merged into one spell and made available to every spellcaster. It probably wouldn't break anything; it's mainly a flavour spell anyways. @@BlertaPupu
In the right game, a character with a good Charisma, Druidcraft, Minor Illusion, Prestidigitation, and Thaumaturgy, can create all kinds of shenanigans, leaving throngs of impressed and beguiled NPCs in their wake, always ready to offer services or favors in the future. 😂
This spell is great if you're stuck in a maze trying to hide from a blind monster Don't worry about why that came up lol Anyways As someone who plays Wizard It pisses me off when people who aren't playing wizard seem to be under the impression that thaumaturgy does the same things prestidigitation does, use the two spell names interchangeably, and tries to use thaumaturgy to do the things prestidigitation does. No no *I'm* the one doing real magic, you're doing stage magic. Prestidigitation is the utility small magic spell Thaumaturgy is the showoff spell We are not the same And stop trying to steal the benefits of my spell while keeping the benefits of your spell. You get to make noises at a 30 ft range that can be much more overt than what we can do at 10 ft. That is incredibly useful, and I wish prestidigitation had that range BUT FOR THE LIFE OF ME, I CANT REMEMBER A SINGLE INSTANCE WHERE SOMEONE PLAYING WIZARD TRIED TO UPGRADE PRESTIDIGITATION TO THAUMATURGY'S RANGE, LIKE CLERIC PLAYERS UPGRADE THAUMATURGY'S EFFECTS TO PRESTIDIGITATION! *sigh* This isn't a ding on the spell Just a lot of the people I've played with who play cleric lol I have been wounded on a personal level by this spell
Great utility spell. Open and close unlocked doors and windows. Mark a location to aim at a wall with sounds. Signaling others with flame dimming or brightening. Eye shenanigans (to look blind, for example). Easily 6/10...
Might be biased but I think it's better than minor illusion. I got minor illusion on my bard but it's just a tiny illusion I'd much rather would like to have the big show effect thaumaturgy has. Fits way better with the aesthetic.
This is absolutely the sermon booster and peasant influencer spell. Great for boosting Intimidation or Persuasion when making a point of scripture.
Got a laugh out of me.

I can just imagine on some VTT having a voice filter and some sound board for some incredible theatrics while using this one
Frau Blücher **
Every time I watch Young Frankenstein that bit always kills me. It will always be hilarious!
The amping/damping effect on a fire should be usable for long ranged night time signaling.
Love the Bully music. Sean Lee was out of this world talented.
Cacophoony! Thank you! Still doing a great job, almost there! Thank you for this series, loving it!
One of the best. Never miss an episode, myself.

Every time I watch Young Frankenstein I ALWAYS laugh when the horses go nuts. It will never stop being funny.
I like using this in dungeons to open door that may be trapped
Hey, get the scp foundation here, this guy can be a huge help to the foundation

If it can be used to open doors, could it be used to open chests? A.k.a. check for more traps?
Ooh, If you can work that angle of it at the table it'd be fantastic.

The fact that you could 100% give yourself anime eyes to play with people's heads is never recognized...

Didn't think of a blind ploy. Good use.
I do believe that Gandalf used this spell.
I find it sad that it's not a bard spell as well. Love it so much :)
Got it aa warlock with pact of the tome. Used to comcibce mafia type dude my character was a deamob
I always ask for advantage on deception or intimidatiin checks using tgis.
It’s basically a cantrip to run a haunted house
Very fun use of it. Those creepy villians have to get there effects from somewhere.
I guess its technically the closest thing a Cleric gets to minor illusion. Still not the best though
Might be biased but I think it's better than minor illusion.

9/10 i use it all the time.
