  • Alrighty day 263! Today is Prestidigitation. It is the vague magic spell. It's just a grab bag of magical effects. Fun to pick up, but actual utility? Let's see, we've got alot of effects to go through.

I'd change color of my clothes to fit in town colors, or based on the season.
Mark someone with magic so we can track him with detect magic.
Distract guards. Its quite literaly sleight of hands tricks magicians do. Pull a coin from behind someones ear. Change suit of a card.
Light up someones cigar. Conjure up a ball to toss against the wall.......not sure if the trinket can leave your hand...
I'd basicaly allow anything that only adds to the character of your pc instead of squeezing every possible advantage out of the game.

      @RichWoods23 3 месяца назад +1

I don't see any reason why a trinket couldn't leave your hand (some examples in the tables are flying gadgets), though having it start there makes sense. For balance, say that the trinket vanishes if goes more than ten feet from you: few wizards are going to want to risk standing within ten feet of an opponent (even one already fighting your ally) just to be able to conjure up a dart in one round in order to throw it the next.

I once used this spell to make water appear/smell/taste like beer as a means of detoxing (against their will) an alcoholic party member. They never learned the truth.
Side bar: chilled underpants during the Summer sounds lovely right about now

As I see it there are four cantrip spells that fill the "vague magic effects" category, and allow a caster to do magicy stuff in pure RP with few real restrictions: Prestidigitation, Druidcraft, Thaumaturgy, and Minor Illusion. All of them also have useful adventuring potentials, but they're mostly for having fun while you're bumming around town.

    • @Zaktact

Fair point for the "Magic" cantrip slot. Each is a grab bag of effects.

Create the scent of a bear in the nose of someone's horse and watch the mayhem. I've also used this narratively on a rock, heating and cooling it alternatingly, and pressing it up against my party's Fighter's shoulders after wielding a Flame Giants sword. Also have used it to selectively clean ink off an official document to alter it's meaning.

5:23 "How chilled and how warm?"
I settled on the cantrip being able to change an object's temperature to fall within the range 5C to 55C. The reasoning for this is that ice crystals start to form in water at 4C (which is where you begin to get into Ray of Frost utility-usage temperature), while 55C is about the maximum drinkable temperature of a nice, hot cup of tea. Technically you can cook white fish at 55C (though no other type of meat), and leaving chopped root vegetables or dried legumes or cracked oats in 55C water for an hour would be just about enough to cook them too, but that's the limit. Pasteurising milk or drinking water requires 65C for a minimum of four minutes; some families of microbial life will survive 55C quite happily.
The other question is what the object's initial allowed temperature range should be. Given the minor nature of the cantrip it seemed reasonable to set this as -20C to 80C, because outside these temperatures touching such a cold or hot object would damage exposed skin rather than simply be unpleasant or painful to the touch. It seemed sensible to not allow the cantrip to be able to counter something like the effect of a Heat Metal spell on a dagger or mace, but still let it be used to free a delicate object from a block of ice (assuming the surroundings aren't arctic, anyway).

As for things like cooling and warming, in Tome and Blood (Older version, but whatever) we see info on all kinds of tricks, with specifics about what you can do.

    • @Paintchipsrocks
      @Paintchipsrocks Год назад +1

Oh, sorry forgot to put numbers. According to that book you can warm or cool by 40 degrees F but never under freezing or over 140F, so not particularly helpful for cooking. It is also listed at being able to gather up small objects so long as they all weigh less than a pound, and are in a ten foot space (Dropped bag of marbles or paperclips or something) and being able to sew, though if you don't provide thread the sewing come undone after an hour. The images are listed as sketches, 2d and able to hang in the air or be placed on something. It is overall great for roleplay situations, and for things like heists. Our group once did a heist where part of my job as the bard was to erase the signs of our passing by removing footprints and the piles of disintegrated enemies the wizard and sorcerer were leaving behind.
It also lists being able to dampen something, giving 2 points of fire resistance. Or make a 1/2 ft long flame appear from your finger, (I'd count it for a candle, and for lighting things). In the 3.5 description it's listed as being able to lift 1lb of material, adding several of the same uses a mage hand..

Distraction tactics for a fight: flanking footsteps draw an opponents attention.
In a shop, if you dont want to pay for something you have seen, create a glass shatter noise in the background to get the shopkeeper to go and investigate.
Smoke under a door to draw attention of guards/dissuade a person from entering. (Even heat the doorknob a bit )
I'm looking forward to using this cantrip with my new character.

Has anyone scene those scented water bottles? I think like 75-80% of taste is just smell.
As for world building, if I was the Emperor, king, or some other ruler I'd hire someone that can cast this spell. Did the army captain just come from the battle and it is a very hot day? Poof! Clean clothes, no blood stains.
Do they reek of BO from ridding in the hot sun? Poof! No BO, just the pleasant smell of fresh baked cookies.
Did they eat garlic or Kimchi or some other thing that smells bad on people's breath? Poof! Breath mints, everyone gets breath mints.
I think the absolute best use of this is to Subtle Spell the sound of a fart coming from your friend and then after that Subtle Spell the fart stink.

Soiling and cleaning probably doesn't do anything bacterial, so it doesn't get rid of B.O., or the inverse, it merely makes things soiled as in earthy. Still delays laundry day, and if you've seen Bernadette Banner's video on the Edwardian era laundry process, you know how big a deal that is.
A creature may not count as an object, but a shirt certainly does.
Small puff of wind: mislead something navigating in pitch darkness moving towards the source of moving air.
Stealth snuffing: Verbal and somatic components: they're gonna hear you snuff the torch.
Flavouring your rations, warming your meal when you can't light a fire for stealth reasons, pretty decent options. I rule that you can't flavour magical food like goodberry so the flavour can get repetitive.
Between the rations and the cleaning, and being feat-accessible and wizardy and therefore theoretically trainable, every soldier, veteran, traveller, merchant, guardsman, anything, under the sun will at least want a squadmate who can cast this along with Mending.

My Tabaxi bard, wasn't a drinker, but liked milk and chocolate milk. I used it to make some strong booze look and taste like chocolate milk. A few sessions later one of the other pc's wanted to try it so I did it again. the party then spent several minutes trying it and getting slightly buzzed, drinking "Jade's Hard Chocolate Milk". Generally I like the spell for cleaning up clothes and you can't understate how useful lighting and snuffing out fires is. Completely useless in fights usually, but outside combat is pretty good.

As for the Trinket thing, can you make a Holy Symbol for your cleric or a wand for you as a wizard to use?
The mark or color thing, use it when you are exploring a cave system. Make a white dot to mark where you have been. Yeah they only last an hour and you can only have three at a time but that should be enough to see if you are doubling back on your path.
Put a mark on the one that your group is tailing. Sure you have to get really close to put the mark on their back but then when you do you just fade away into the crowd and let your friends follow them.
This is a weird one. Just what can you "soil" a cloth with? Since it is instant whatever the piece of cloth is soiled with is made real. Can you then wash that cloth and then evaporate the water so you are left with whatever the "soil" is made out of?

Prestidigitation or as I call it, Least Wish
This is your "I am a Wizard" cantrip. The usual rule of thumb is one attack cantrip, one utility cantrip, and Prestidigitation.
From a world building perspective there is little else that screams "I am magical" than this spell. Role Player and Optimizer focused players alike will love this spell.

small as in make a small mark appear kind of has a size, as in the tiny-small-medium-large spectrum. I would say its about 4 feet a side max, however its unclear if it also applies to objects.
About the trinket until end of your next turn:
Subtle spell this, then show them your totally real and 100% relevant to the situation FBI/fight club/VIP membership card, only for 6 seconds tough, however they can probably concede that you are very important, and need to pass through immediately, especially on an eloquence bard this rocks.
Lockpicking is an action, so you can feasibly manifest lockpicking tools and use them
Talking about that kind of stuff, if you are in prison or something and dont have the resources, you can also use this to make spellcasting components, sure you can only cast every other turn, however a fireball every now and then is still way better than casting firebolt all the time.
Then you can even make it better, you can even use this as an attack cantrip kind of to make acid, then throw it next turn (or as an opportunity attack) for 1d4+str bludgeoning and 2d6 acid, not great, however could get past nonmagical damage resistance early on.
You can make other tools that only require an action, the relevant part of an healers kit, sure it takes 2 actions, however it guarantees a success on stabilizing the creature. Additionally if explosives are a thing, like a straight up bomb that is not magical, you can do that every other turn.
And thats just the trinket option.

How about this, cast it on yourself three times to 1) give yourself a weird odor, 2) make your cloak dirty, and 3) make it a different color.. put the hood up to cover your face, then cast friends to give yourself advantage against someone... as soon as you've gotten what you need, walk around the corner, throw your hood back, and remove the three effects.

I see it as total vs total. Look at what you're wearing in this video. If you can't fold that entire outfit up into a one-foot cube (less really considering how well clothes fold) then there's something wrong with you 😛 Best use for the spell... taking a bath. Stone tub, use the warm function to warm sections or the whole bottom of it, fill the tub from the decanter of endless water, let the stone heat the water, re-apply warmth as needed, and have yourself a nice long soak in the tub lol.

Also, I once tried to come up with the most unsatisfying (most unsatisfying, not most creative; you can make proper coffee this way, but for characters in question, it was far from the first priority) way to make coffee if you only have some coffee beans, water, and Prestidigitation, but eventually gave up. Probably my best idea is to chew on coffee beans and drink hot water.

This spell does so much and is a problem in it self.
A small trinket is a improvised weapon.
This can easily kill a commoner.
You now have a murder without weapon.
Divination possibly can counteract that, but still.
