Obstacle Odyssey is clearly inspired by Super Monkey Ball, which has you play levels in order from the beginning. Allowing you to start at any fifth level was probably mimicking the secret gates which passing through skips the next however many levels.
The checkerboard floating platforms with the very-slightly-raised borders around them makes the inspiration more obvious in-the-know, I think. (I know checkerboards are a common thing to use to easily convey 3D perspective, but usually they're replaced in games with other textures post-prototype.)
Not to mention the difficulty curve revolving way more on precision than more-traditional platformers, which tend to focus more on introducing new mechanics and unlockables instead of just more-of-the-same but stricter.
This is one of those games that is oddly nostalgic enough to remember playing it all those years ago but before being reminded of it i couldn't tell you its name or that it even existed.
I was always scared of that "WARNING: You have the last 2 minutes before your free trial ends"
So that wasn't a fever dream, i remember that scaring me as a kid.

This game was HYPE in the elementary school computer lab. I remember it being super hard, and anyone who could complete the game was a beast.
I am now realizing how much of my childhood was just... SpongeBob lmfao. Had this one also through Big Fish Games. I remember the green jellyfish fields was like the first drawing I ever made as a child. Teacher asked me to draw a person... so I drew SpongeBob on a green checkerboard, lol. So many memories with these ones.
Also, I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS GAME WAS A RESKIN, IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW. I also had the second one and I remember it always crashed for some reason at a certain point so I gave up, I remember thinking it was much more charming than the first one though, I loved the comic panels.
I can't believe Obstacle Odyssey was just Doki Doki Panic all along.
I used to play this all the time on my late aunt's computer when i was a kid. It was always this and the Diner Dash games. These games were so freaking fun for no reason. I dont remember odyssey deleting my save file, but i was always restarting anyway 😂😂😂
Fun fact: Obstacle Odyssey 2 was released on CD ROM alongside the SpongeBob vs. The Big One DVD in 2009. They came in a tin lunchbox and it was exclusive to Walmart.

I never played the first, but I had Obstacle Odyssey 2: Time Trouble from the SpongeBob vs. The Big One Lunchbox bundle and loved the hell outta it

I was OBSESSED with this game as a kid. I have detailed memories of this game. It always had such a bizarre vibe that I found intriguing.

Man, you just unlocked a memory in my brain! I remember playing so many Spongebob games back in the day. I remember one where you played golf in 3D, while shrunken down in large set pieces in Bikini Bottom. I really need to get my hands on some of these old games!
I never really played Obstacle Odyssey, but I did play the 3D Pinball Spongebob game, plus the Spongebob Movie 3D game. Those I have fond memories of.
I REMEMBER THE NAME "BIG FISH GAMES" SO VIVIDLY. My older sister had a Dell laptop that came with a subscription to this service, and I remember playing the second Spongebob game on it. I had forgotten the name of this game for years, but I did remember that in one of the levels I somehow clipped out of bounds as Mr Krabs.

I had golden childhood memories with this game and many other SpongeBob pc games. This game was really good and the music in it is beautiful.
Edit: Damn I had no idea it was a reskin of another game.. But I forgive it for that because they're both made by the same company, plus it has better music and playing as SpongeBob characters is better than playing as some random ducks.

MAN I randomly had a thought about this and thought I'd never find it. Thank you, my little kid me remembers this completely differently but the frustration is still in the back of my mind, so it's right.

i played this on our old home computer, i was young, can’t exactly remember but i wanna say 9 maybe, im 18 now and i can very… VERY much confirm that the same part you struggled on is SO FUCKING HARD. that slide and the jump fucking suck, never got past it. rage set in so deep i vividly remember what i was seeing.
I had Time Trouble as a kid, it came bundled with some Spongebob dvd i think. I played through the whole thing but i was kinda dissapointed by the limited visual design of the levels (tho i liked the comic cutscenes). Seeing that it originated from a reskinned game makes sense
I actually own the physical copy of Obstacle Odyssey, never played it due to the fact we didn't have any PC, let alone internet, at the time

going mostly off anecdotal evidence here, but IME the main demographic for these kinds of services, at least these days, is gen x/boomers who fuckin *love* these things. i actually remember my parents having some big fish launcher on our old PC
kids today have roblox, minecraft, steam, etc. so theres nothing really driving them there these days

even if the graphics looks lousy. real men enjoy the game for fun. not for graphics!
