As a late Gen Z, here is my take here. Sure, he spends his money wastefully. But who could blame him? Prices keep on growing in all fields; utilities, transportation, housing, etc. It's easy to say to save. But for what? This is no longer the 1970s where a single job could support a family. We now like in the 2020s where the minimum wage is only really meant for a single person to survive on. Take me for example. I came from a family of 4. I have a sister who has autism. My father also works so there are 2 breadwinners in the family. And almost all our salary gets spent on paying the mortgage, utilities, food, and transportation. I could only save about 5-8% of my wages. But the prices keep on increasing as days go by. If I don't have my family to push me forward, I probably would lose all hope. And at least he doesn't have any vices like drinking, smoking or taking drugs. Those may be cheaper at the start, but it will be more expensive in the long run.
As mentioned, you're a Late Gen Z, so you're still relatively young, probably around 25yrs? If so, you have barely any working experience and have yet to venture out into the working life much (assuming you're Singaporean and have served your national service and completed your University studies). Give yourself more time 5-10yrs to work and carve a career path for yourself. Life is not all bad if we can look at the positive side of it, stay happy and plan for things in the future. I'm a Milleninial, born in the 80s, but in my household, I'm the sole bread winner, my wife retired when we got married 7yrs ago. I work hard for my family and can still save 30-40% sometimes even 50% of my salary each month (compared to 10yrs ago when i was living paycheck to paycheck). All these takes time and hardwork, unfortunately too many younger folks are complaining more than they are working hence creating a trend among those in their 20s. Stay away from the "3 demons", gambling, drinking and womanizing, life would be bright for you. Good luck!
I kinda like that his mother is willing to allow him to try for his dreams first. Seems like she has all the necessary financial know hows to teach him when he himself chooses to learn i.e not forcing it on him. He's also young enough to fail and still be relatively fine. Money is important, but so is balance.

I also don't plan on getting married or having children (well, more like because no one wants me so I know I'll be forever alone. But I digress). However, that's the more reason to save up for the future for me. I don't wanna be someone old, alone, and with no money to take care for myself 😞 Hence, I saved up like crazy so I could depend on myself without troubling anyone.
Good for you. Don't marry if you cannot cope. Don't dig a big hole for yourself which you cannot come out of. Also, my advice to you, keep yourself eductaed on healthcare and nutrition. Learn to take good care of your body if you want your body to take good care of you when you grow old. Good health is a discipline, not a given. When you grow old, you have to take care of yourself. So start learning good habits now. don’t wait until sickness come, then you want to change your diet. It’s too late. Prevention is cheaper than cure.
@@NickSiekierski . That is a big IF. But if you are unlucky and you got a autistic child like my friend, it’s a lifetime commitment until you die, there is no payback. well, it's not that he's not investing - that 1/3rd of his salary is an investment in his music career. would be more accurate to say it's an undiversified, high risk investment. he needs to have an emergency fund and a small amount to low risk investment.
He will feel the pain later in his 30s - 40s, when his parents probably cannot help him further bcos they need the money to take care of themselves ( health deterioting as they age ) ...
