Chinese food is so good!!! I ate so well there. Nothing like America. You can go in a restaurant and get any vegetable dish for like $2!! It was amazing. Rice was like 10 cents.

1) "you ate the chicken's son" 😂🤠Country people are country people, all over the 🌎 love seeing how much we all share across the earth 2) I am guessing that many americans actually have eaten bamboo shoots, they are in those cans of "chow mein" veggies - if you had a non-Asian grandma who grew up in the 50s or 60s, and she made some not great, oddly bland "Chinese food," often with hamburger meat, you probably had canned bamboo shoots! But yeah these sound delicious & very different.
I remember my Polish grandmother making delicious Chop Suey (I’m pretty sure that was an Americanized Chinese dish) when I was a child in the early 1960s. It was one of my favorite dishes of hers. I am 100% sure now that there were bamboo shoots in that dish!😋

I’ve always wanted to forage for bamboo shoots. It’s definitely on my bucket list to do, when I can finally get over to Japan to visit family. Rose, what a great recipe to make and share. I love congee, so I can totally see how these two dishes can be paired up nicely. Great job!

Adding some side dishes 1. pan oil fried dry chinese red sausage 2. stir fried spinach or stir fried egg plant mince meat with chopped leak, garlic, chilli, seasoning: oyster sauce, sugar, light soy sauce 3. Salted egg/ century egg dishes to go with your porridge meal is also ideal

only the shoot of the bamboo is edible after cooking it, when the bamboo is fully grown, it becomes poisonous so only eat the shoots. Wisdom from my chinese ancestor and my parent( still chinese anyways). You will surprise that there are many chinese dishes with bamboo shoots, go and try them if you get the chance. I personally don't like eating bamboo shoots as a picky eater, but everyone around me likes it so you should try it once.

If you had hot and sour soup or stir frys in restaurants, you probably have eaten bamboo shoots. You can buy them in Asian markets and they are usually soaked in a tub of water. They are cone shaped and light yellow in color. Fresh bamboo shoots are not stringy like canned ones.

@JohnCB I’m from jamaica and I didn’t know it could be eaten either but I think because when we were growing up we did not see any of our grandparents and parents eating it hence the reason why we didn’t know. I also watched another Chanel with an African family and they also cooked pumpkin leaves and eat it as vegetable

What a team. I love watching this couple. Rose, please raise the leg heights of your tables when you work as you are tall. Bending over like this is far too much strain on the lower back and over time will damage your back. As a furniture maker I had to do this too. It changes the whole experience in a positive way.
