Did the van life in 2010 for 6 months in So cal, it was the best time of my life. It made me become a minimalist, started eating healthy, went to the gym almost everyday, paid no rent and just enjoyed life for 6 months. Then I ended up getting a career job for the next 9 years, quit that job 4 months ago and about to head out and do the van life full time. so cheers!!

Yes, van life is not all roses. You do what makes you happy, you do what makes you comfortable too. Kate is doing what makes her happy and I would be proud of that for sure.

@Rata 4U Some people are very "happy" living in a van or camper or RV. I have met many that are "happy", yes some are doing it for financial reasons but they are also able to have freedom to move about. I, being a bit disabled, retired and nearly 60, I would need a bit more comfort, but yes, sometimes folks are not happy, they have been evicted or lost everything cause they lost their job or whatever their story, that could be sad, but most of the people I have met are very happy, healthy and living the life.

Add 4 milk crates and a piece of plywood. It adds storage space and gets her off the floor.
It doesn't have to be fancy.
I use a bunkbed, small mattress

I saw a guy that owns a Teardrop Trailer put a metal baking rack in the bottom of his cooler with 6 ping pong size balls with the wholes in them like miniature whiffle balls. He fastened them to the underneath of the rack using clear Zip ties, 1 @ each corner and 2 centered on either side. That elevates the rack so the contents are out of any water.

Oh sweetie, You remind me of my 20 year old daughter. The only bit of her home that is homey is her bedroom and that is because it looks exactly like her room did at home, which I decorated. She knows how to cook because I taught her, but she opts for anything vegan and convenient. Here’s what I told her.
Your home matters, no matter where you live. You don’t decorate for company, you decorate for yourself. You have to be good to you and making your home comfortable is an excellent way to pamper yourself. Having a home tailored just for you is important, more important than you think. Your home is where you regenerate your batteries. If it’s ill equipped to provide you a bit if comfort and luxury what good is it? You need to cook. Cooking at home is healthier and healthier means more energy to do fun stuff. You're young and eating unhealthy foods can make you feel and look older. No one wants that.
If you are happy with van life, fantastic. I plan on becoming a vanlifer myself. I don't consider you homeless, just comfortless. Find one thing that you miss from your past homes and make it work in the van. I would go for a bed, but that's me. I love my bed. Set up a kitchen area. You need to cook sometimes.
Now, my most important bit of help...cheese, I love cheese. You can have cheese in the van. It stays good without refrigeration much longer than what most people have been taught. Buy extra hard cheeses like Parmesan which will last a month out. Those considered hard are cheddar, Edam, Gouda, Swiss and the like are good for a week. If it's aged add a week. The exception is Gouda, it's not supposed to be refrigerated according to the Gouda makers. Now soft cheeses like Brie and Camembert last 3 to 5 days. Fresh cheeses like cottage and cream cheese only have a few hours. The good thing is that lots of store carry individual servings of these goodies. The theme here is moisture content. The moister the cheese the less time you have. Learn what a bad cheese smells like. It's got an ammonia odor.
Storage of cheese requires you to seal out the air. I use to dip my hard cheese in wax, but it just an irritating task. I have found the plastic wrap called Press and Seal is amazing for cheeses. Remember air is the enemy.
Those little triangles of cheese with the cow are spreads and that means high moisture. So eat them quickly.
One thing to keep in mind, the texture of unrefrigerated cheese is much different and might take some getting use to. With all the storage times it's the dead of summer with high temps cut the times in half. Don't forget about delis. With a deli in just about every big grocery store you have the opportunity to buy a slice.or two and not worry at all about storage. If cheese makes you happy, like it does me, you should have cheese. You deserve cheese.
One last thing. To keep ice in a cooler longer you need a good cooler, Ziploc bags and ice cream salt. Then fill the Ziploc bags with ice. Toss the cubes with the salt. Push out any air and seal it. Have a layer of bags on the bottom and a layer on top of everything. No more swimming food and the ice will last longer. For my camping cooler I made two trays just the right size to fit in the cooler with a half inch around the sides, out of foam core board that I spray painted. My layering of the cooler goes like this...
Flattened bags of ice on bottom, tray number one with 2 to 2 1/2 inch lip which holds all my food stuff, next is my second tray with a 1 inch lip and it holds my remaining flattened ice bags. nextMake sure you have a fridge thermometer for your cooler too. Things should be monitored.
I sure can ramble on! Take this advice or leave it, especially since it was not asked for.
I wish you all the best. Be extra good to yourself and call your Mother more often. I am certain she would like that. Lol. Happy trails!

@@EvansvilleJill I'm a rambler and working on it. I tell people I've never talked so much in my life, and it's true. My children are grown, one is about to be a grandparent, my husband/mate died 11 years ago. So, now I tell people I live alone and hate it so this is why I talk too much--so there! That's my story and if you don't want to listen you don't have too and I understand (giggle). Most understand and listen, then I shut up and listen to them, lol. I loved everything you told this young woman--not sure if I could get through all the advise about cheese because I don't really like cheese. Otherwise, good advise, now, I think, I'm interested in cheeses :).

Here's a thought, how about getting a little plug in kettle, and a really good large thermos, to boil water where you can plug the kettle in ? (I assume if you have a hair dryer, the gym washrooms have the outlets)...may look a bit odd to others but you can at least get a day's supply of boiling hot water for hot chocolate, tea, noodles, or whatever.

Nice video. I love that you are happy doing what you do, yet tell the truth about the realities of discomfort. Some channels tout mobile living as all butterflies & roses and this causes grief for those who jump into it w/o considering fully the ramifications. One person who I remember as being deeply depressed after jumping into the lifestyle, thought he'd have comrade/friendships on the road, only to discover he was isolated & lonely. I think the best approach is to take it slow, go on weekend then week long trips, down size in your home to one or two rooms, try to eliminate using a bathroom for a while. See how the realities of minimalism fits before jumping in too quickly. Thanks for your feedback & being real ; )

Kate is the best simple living van lifer.
I have lived very similar to you Kate, for 21 years and live in both luxury and simplicity, and find vanlife to engage me more with less, plus SAVING money seeing my bank account grow, not paying crazy rent prices while literally 'living more.'
    It's so simple.
Vanlife is about having more freedom, more time, more adventure, more choices, etc.
Kate, you are truly making great choices👍👍👍
I live on the Florida east coast Atlantic Ocean beaches for the cooler months, then the high Rockies in the late spring into November where it can snow in August.
Also go the Sedona, Santa Cruz, Humboldt, all awesome places when ever the desire sprouts.
Kate is on the nicest path for more freedom and comforts in a calm minimal way.
This girl knows the joy of being around friends, working, and the joys of home everywhere she goes.
I've been looking for someone who actually has these comforts without all the complexities of build outs that actually make less sense.
Rec centers offers much more than just super hot showers... you can socialize there and make great friends at rec centers.
I actually do way more in life, when I'm van life living. The last 3vsumners since covid hit, in the summers I have an oceanfront studio in Daytona Beach Shores, and after 2 months, I'm ready for van life again.
Kate...you are definitely doing things in a comfortable calm freedom style. I'm sure you are occasionally finding ways to adjust in different ways making things better and better.
    You are super awesome Kate👍🙏🌻🎶🌸🌎🌷

Kate... even if you cannot build a thanggg... try a piece of plywood... have friend drill many loonie sized holes in it.. for ventilation... place bed and mats etc.. on zip tied milk crates... lots of zip ties to lash all together..quite stable if you sort of make a crate brick.. plus storage under.... mold is nasty.. this will help with airflow and condensation.. and your health!... well done girl!... how do you insure if you are from London?.. asking.. because I would like to do stateside... already converted vans are plentiful down in AZ .. so just wondered how a foreigner can insure... cheers.. stay warm..

You may like the way you’ve organized but Walmart has an aluminum camping cot with mattress that would get you off the floor & provide under bed pullout storage using 5-10” plastic Tupperware type lids, you could double stack them.you might if so inclined to consider a small unit on the opposite side of bed to contain a small salad bowl SS sink w/ grey water container underneath & addition storage, I wld DC your igloo ice boxes in favor of a new WM Yeti-style w/ 3” sides & top, igloo does not insulate their tops.Shalom!

Why do so many people who live in vans waste space with useless trinkets and decorative items like prayer flags? If someone claims to be a minimalist, then shouldn't they have a minimal amount of possessions?

    • @zazita7333

Thanks for the video. This was interesting. I'm in a SUV and I love it. I was wondering why she's living like she's homeless though. She hasn't really allowed herself any comforts. I'm guessing it goes back to her saying she wanted to challenge herself, maybe to see how little she can live with. My primary focus is to be happy as I travel so I have a Jackery, an electric kettle to heat water for hot chocolate, a collapsible sink for washing dishes, etc. I grew up poor and it sucked so I can't imagine living without the small comforts. Like everything though, it's whatever makes us happy. Glad she found what does it for her.

Those inflatable pads make all the difference backpacking and can change a trip from "well this is just okay I guess but really this kinda sucks" to "wow, this is nice, I'm off the cold ground, warm, and actually enjoying this." That's in the woods. In a van with blankets and real pillows its probably amazing.

When your interviewees mention the lack of heating, chilled food, washing etc...you have ppl in "sticks-n-bricks" who can't even afford those options now. Some of these vans are probably more comfortable than an apartment.

I am considering putting a board measured an given to the home depo to cut to size.An I will just take my paint cans an put six under the board an put my memory foam mattress on top of that.An then a couple of low profile bins can fit right under that.I have a two burner electric cook top from walmart.I can plug it into my van. But, I have other things I could power to cook with if I build my own solar panels. When I can afford to do so.It's alot less expensive if you can figure it all out, an have a address they will ship that too.
