AP--Pennsylvania A young man attempting to honor his Soviet ancestors by repairing a customer's Subaru with scraps of a second hand spark plug wire was consumed whole by coyotes last night. By the time investigators arrived on the scene, only a head mounted utility light, part of a multimeter lead, a scrap of duct tape and a spark plug boot remained. The heavily stained coyotes were eventually pulled over by Pennsylvania state police while attempting a westward escape in the badly misfiring Subaru. A memorial service will be held on Staten Island, with a touching eulogy by Eric Obrachta. Attendees will be given a small roll of duct tape and a pamphlet on Toyota output shaft read errors.
I like your spray bottle technique for finding secondary ignition faults - simple, quick and cheap. It looks like it could be an old school test, but It’s new to me.

Rusty, dry spark plug threads. Spark plugs not torqued down. All spark plug wires loose. Permatex copper anti seize PLEASE PEOPLE, it's made for a reason. Excellent diag Ivan.

Ivan nice old school fix. Did it often in days gone by when cars were simple. Don't need to make everything complicated. Sometimes you make do with what you have. 👍
I was taught to use a spray bottle too, put a couple drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid in the water it will penetrate even smaller pin holes. I have used duct tape when I had nothing else. Don't let those guys bother you. Good job!!
I enjoy that though you have more of a formal automotive technician business you still have a shade tree mechanic mentality. This is very lose terminology as you obviously operate during hours of darkness. Keep it up.

DiagnoseDan...that show is back on here in the states!! Some young guy, and one of the CSI LAS VEGAS tv show guys!! Lol They ought to get Ivan to write some of their duct tape episodes, for them!! He could write one where Mac fixes a broke down nuclear bomb, with duct tape, and old Subaru spark plug wire ends!! Then he could write an episode where Mac is flying on AIR FORCE ONE with P.O.T.U.S. when the engines fail due to a fuel leak in the center tank, that Mac fixes with an old HONDOO intake snorkel and duct tape to seal it all up!!

That Scanner Danner Water test is amazing as well as your procedures to find easier solutions without too many complications, a lot of times in my country we have to address the solution by fixing the actual part without replacing the whole thing due to a lack of parts or too expesive parts, anyways this fixes just teach us how parts work and the engineering behind it. Same for us Finns (next door to Russia), never throw out anything which still works. You'll need it to get to the parts store, sooner or later.. (Some time in next 5 years when the re-used part finally gives up the ghost). AND hand over the pile of used parts to the next owner. If he/she does not appreciate it, do not sell your used vehicle to that person! Never. Easy test.
I keep all kinds of spare parts junk. My wife is always fussing about my hoarding. When something breaks around the house she is glad I have a free part to fix it with though.

I installed a Diehard into my Tacoma. It lasted 14 Years. When it got replaced it was just starting to get weak, not dead all together. Amazing. I thought maybe cause the truck dosent have alot of extra crap on it using 12 v. Nice fix..No parts needed, well no new parts needed :)
It was a Die-Hard, but it also had a name that die-Hard Gave it, I remember it printed across the front, and it was 8 to 10 letters, I tried to find another one like it, but they we not to be had. I bought it before I left Houston, 2003, and replaced it in 2017, with a Naper.

I am a retired electrician and worked on a bit of high voltage during my long career. When an arc happens it leave a trail that is conductive, nothing you can do short of cleaning the track of all the marks left by the arcing will stop further arcing. Replacing the boot removes the arc track, it isn't the pin holes per se that is the problem but the material left in the pin holes by the arc that is the problem. Putting a new boot on the wire in that case should be a fine fix, the wire wasn't hurt by the arc so replacing it would just be an extra expense to the customer. You remind me of my mechanic, who just called to tell me my son's car is finished, he does the work with the least expensive material.

Having to repair other peoples screwups, nicely repaired ivan :-D The junk pile.. errr "Second use supplys" helped keep the cost down to the poor customer. Also saving the earth with managed recycling. What more could anyone want? :) Who said Bullshit? lol.
Keeping older vehicle running is the best thing for the environment; as long as they run clean. Reusing reclaimed parts is also beneficial. So many "modern" cars are almost disposable; use them a while and then toss em out like old razor blades.

This is perhaps RUclips's best misfire video. Mine is also number 2 but older Subie 1996. I suspect it's the cable and will likely swap it out. The problem with the tests you did water or meter is that it won't necessarily detect all problems with the cable. Also misfires can be caused by half a dozen other things, like a sticky injector causing a random misfire.

Thanks for this, very straight forward.. I'm wondering if u can give a 2nd opinion on what I'm missing? 06 Forester threw. C2 code, upon inspection I needed to do new plug, wires coil. Drove good for a day then it thew a C4 code.. recheck everything and all looks good, hmm ok next I check injector resistance at 5ohms in a cold ass garage.. decide to swap them and see if the code follows, it didn't, still C4.. ok let's do a pressure test.. all cylinder from 160-175psi... While I was doing that decided to swap the plugs between 2 and 4, issue still persists... Anything I'm overlooking?? Thx
Another great Fix from PHAD ! Maybe that was Keith going though the animals screaming as you sprayed the water. I wonder if scanner danner learned that water spray at pep boys ? . Love the extra footage . I hope you film thehead gasket repair. Do you ever use WD-40 or silicon spray to help water proof the wires ?
Years ago I bought spark plug wires for a V8 and in the box was a coil of wire and 18 ends needing assembly - perfect for that custom fit job. Stupid me, I used it.

The safety glasses grinding on the wheel as they fell was hilarious. Somewhere several safety police have lost their minds after seeing that. But good example of how the dielectric grease is suppose to be smeared off the contact point by the tight contact. If not, you get a baked on dielectric finish.

Mine is cylinders 3,4, and 6. 2006 subaru tribeca b9 3.0. I'm just starting. All I've done so far is scan it and drive it. It ran really rough and shut off. I'll pull the plugs and check the coil packs.
Similar issue to my 4Runner that you did a similar water bottle test on :) Gotta say the easiest solution to plug wires is to just go OEM. I paid $60 for Toyota wires ($20 more than NGK) and they were all nicely pre-routed in a loom and extra little clips, the boots all clicked in perfectly, compared to the mishaped NGK ends that caused that misfire issue in the wet. I wonder how much an OE Subie set costs?
Dear Ivan, As I was "smoking out" for any leak from the top of the engine, I saw smokes from the EGR valve (inside the EGR body, not the contact part to the intake). This is for my 2004 Honda accord V6 3.0L engine, 200K miles. What is the relation of such leak to the fuel trim for this MAP based Honda engine? Regular MAF based engine, we should see positive STFT, right? But for MAP based engine, the STFT will be negative, right? Should I buy a new EGR from Honda or the aftermarket? Initial start up of a cold engine, STFT is -27 bank 1. Can such EGR leak can cause -27 STFT? Many thanks & God bless, Hai
I've always used the ol spray bottle on cars with spark plug wires as the start of my misfire diags with great success in finding intermittent codes, including the dreaded Po300 codes, where scan data doesn't show individual misfire history nor live misfire counters. I even use it on sensor/actuator connectors that I find suspect, and have fixed a lot of intermittent codes that way. Hey, it beats spraying carb cleaner right? LOL
Eric O indeed did a spark plug wire repair video. I think it was for a vehicle that the rats chewed through the plug wires. I learned the proper way to do those plug wires through his video. But, I keep forgetting to use dielectric grease and regret it a year later when I check, and replace if needed, the spark plugs. I'll hopefully remember the grease should I get hired as a mechanic very soon. While we're quoting other RUclipsrs.... And there's your dinner!

I find liquid electric tape will seal them up nice as a temporary fix. You can always say no "new" parts required!

I always load the engine to verify no misfire,idle may not produce spark leak.

My buddy had an old Fiat 124 that was missing. One wire next to a ground was arcing. We reversed it end for end and it was "fixed".

Drove good for a day then it thew a C4 code.. recheck everything and all looks good, hmm ok next I check injector resistance at 5ohms in a cold ass garage.. decide to swap them and see if the code follows, it didn't, still C4.. ok let's do a pressure test.. all cylinder from 160-175psi... While I was doing that decided to swap the plugs between 2 and 4, issue still persists... Anything I'm overlooking?? Thx
Another great Fix from PHAD ! Maybe that was Keith going though the animals screaming as you sprayed the water. I wonder if scanner danner learned that water spray at pep boys ? . Love the extra footage . I hope you film thehead gasket repair. Do you ever use WD-40 or silicon spray to help water proof the wires ?
WD-40 seems to work well on moisture-prone distributor caps!

Years ago I bought spark plug wires for a V8 and in the box was a coil of wire and 18 ends needing assembly - perfect for that custom fit job. Stupid me, I used it.

The safety glasses grinding on the wheel as they fell was hilarious. Somewhere several safety police have lost their minds after seeing that.
But good example of how the dielectric grease is suppose to be smeared off the contact point by the tight contact. If not, you get a baked on dielectric finish.
Yeah I think that was the root cause of this problem :)

Needs valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals. Don't forget the rotted off ground straps.

Mine is cylinders 3,4, and 6. 2006 subaru tribeca b9 3.0. I'm just starting. All I've done so far is scan it and drive it. It ran really rough and shut off. I'll pull the plugs and check the coil packs.
Similar issue to my 4Runner that you did a similar water bottle test on :) Gotta say the easiest solution to plug wires is to just go OEM. I paid $60 for Toyota wires ($20 more than NGK) and they were all nicely pre-routed in a loom and extra little clips, the boots all clicked in perfectly, compared to the mishaped NGK ends that caused that misfire issue in the wet. I wonder how much an OE Subie set costs?
Yeah can't beat OEM. Might have to buy them separately one at a time from Subaru lol
Subaru OEM are around 50$, NGK can be found for 35-45$, so really not saving much.

As I was "smoking out" for any leak from the top of the engine, I saw smokes from the EGR valve (inside the EGR body, not the contact part to the intake). This is for my 2004 Honda accord V6 3.0L engine, 200K miles. What is the relation of such leak to the fuel trim for this MAP based Honda engine? Regular MAF based engine, we should see positive STFT, right? But for MAP based engine, the STFT will be negative, right? Should I buy a new EGR from Honda or the aftermarket? Initial start up of a cold engine, STFT is -27 bank 1. Can such EGR leak can cause -27 STFT?

I've always used the ol spray bottle on cars with spark plug wires as the start of my misfire diags with great success in finding intermittent codes, including the dreaded Po300 codes, where scan data doesn't show individual misfire history nor live misfire counters. I even use it on sensor/actuator connectors that I find suspect, and have fixed a lot of intermittent codes that way. Hey, it beats spraying carb cleaner right? LOL
Water works great. , so does lifting the hood on a dark night and watcing the fireworks

Eric O indeed did a spark plug wire repair video. I think it was for a vehicle that the rats chewed through the plug wires. I learned the proper way to do those plug wires through his video. But, I keep forgetting to use dielectric grease and regret it a year later when I check, and replace if needed, the spark plugs. I'll hopefully remember the grease should I get hired as a mechanic very soon. While we're quoting other RUclipsrs.... And there's your dinner!
