  • To start out 2025, I decided to go check out this Thunderbolt located atop the County Courthouse in downtown Ashland. As some of you may know, Ashland County is slowly in the process of a system-wide upgrade, replacing all of their older legacy sirens with newer units that feature battery power. The goal is to install three new sirens each year, as funding permits. These new units so far have been solar-powered 2001-130s. So far, the Darley Champion in Ashland, the Model 2T in Ruggles Township, and the Dale Roy School Thunderbolt have all been replaced; with the latter installation happening within the last month.
This Thunderbolt, along with the STL-10 at the Fairgrounds on Claremont Avenue were two of the original five sirens mentioned in the initial article about the siren replacement as being priorities for EMA within the next couple of years. So, not knowing when I would be able to get out here next, I decided to go to this Thunderbolt, and it did not disappoint. I was joined by Emmett (‪@SDTrains‬ ) and Jack for this test. Enjoy!
Ashland County normally conducts siren testing on the 1st Wednesday of every month around noon, however the test may be delayed in the event of a fire call or other emergency.

I would have been there too, my mom was tired and didn’t feel like driving.

Every year, Thunderbolts now become less common.

It's going to be sad to see this one go. This is a staple piece to Ashland County.
