Whoa, I really learned so much from your review of this cuphead's animations. I like to see RUclipsrs play this game, but never really pay attention to the character, I just like the way they move Your detailed explanations about their different ways of changing the mode and basically the little details of the animations really inspires me. I probably will go back and forth to your channel when I'm in desperate need of an inspiration especially this video, in particular Good job and thank you!
Hey, thanks so much for your kinds words, that really means a lot! I'm glad you enjoyed this video, stayed tuned and there'll be more videos on game animation!
A lot of stuff mentioned here backs up why cartoons in that era looked so dark and uncanny. Thanks for pointing them out, definitely learned something outta this video.
My apologies, this video used to have a different beginning but I chopped it out cos it was crap, so this new time stamp is at 5:51 Basically as Cuphead goes to shoot his charge shot, I cut it to the plane releasing a charge shot.
Cuphead is the ultimate example of style over substance (not in a bad way), because EVERYTHING (and I mean everything) about how the game is designed lets the animation shine... Which it does, brilliantly! I can't think of any other games that were created FOR an aesthetic that pull it off quite as well as Cuphead does, probably because the concept of bullet hell games is fundamentally very simple. It truly blows my mind how well this game was artistically and mechanically designed and what excellent choices the developers made to support their vision.
Cuphead has my most favorite soundtrack of any game. Plus I'd love to see cuphead inspire new animation in this style or just more hand drawn animation in general. Flash animation just doesn't have the look or fluidity of traditional animation, even if it's just drawn directly on a computer. Too many western studios rely to much on cheap flash animation that looks lazy and nowhere near as alive as traditional. I know it's a lot harder to animate that way but the results in the end just look much better. These animators could even take the route of anime and only animate at 8 to 12 frames per second and save higher frame rate animation for more important scene like action scenes
Yeah, I think Cuphead is definitely doing wonders for more traditional hand drawn stuff, even if it's still digital, like Skullgirls. Heck, even Sonic Mania, including its intro animation, has had a lot more thought and consideration put into the animated sprites.
6:34 Usually we call this telegraphing. The boss is slightly giving a hint as to what its doing.Like in this example,Grim Matchstick is charging his fullscreen flamethrower attack yet since its such a devastating move it needs some form of windup aka telegraphing.
Thanks! I knew it was called something. I should have gone into some of the game details around the animation too really, but at least I will remember it's name now!
When a character in an animation does this, it's anticipation. It serves a similar purpose, except it's more to give the character's following action more weight to it and to make it look more natural. For example, it would look unnatural to see a pitcher throw a baseball (the action) without him winding-up (the anticipation) first. That's one of the reasons I think Cuphead is ingenious: The over-the-top anticipation animations that old cartoons are known for also telegraph the bosses' attacks to the player.
On Megaman 11's defense; Mega man's animation is stiff on purpose, to avoid the floatiness and slowdown of input that happened in Megaman 7 or 8 (I disagree with that decision, but its their game). But I must say that the rest of the enemies and stage elements look nicely animated.
I love how games like Cuphead and Bendy are revitalizing the popularity of 1920s-30s cartoons, signaling a bit of a renaissance in how the art style/animation is executed in different mediums-like video game and cartoons.
Video Game Animation Study I know it’s a year old but I’m actually doing a 3D cartoon style platformer horror game inspired by the pre coded Max Fleischer cartoons that were aimed for mature audiences like swing you sinners and Minnie the moocher and I want to make sure it’s fully perfect and hit its full potential instead of being another typical and generic indie horror game with a unique art style.
Great break down of the animation. I really liked the bit about the rounded characters, and how the juxtaposition of the comfort of curves caused them to feel even more menacing. A really good thing to consider when doing character design. Keep up the great work as always.
Wow, this game has been out for over 4 years and I'm just now discovering it for the first time??? I've seen you use clips from this game a few times and I just now came across this video. Well I'm sold! I LOVE this animation style and the arcade like gameplay. And again I love your analysis of the animations. Really good stuff!
Brilliant video! I play this game with my son, who is five. He's never seen any old cartoons which inspired this style, but when I play Cuphead, he's completely transfixed. I can't wait for Cuphead 2!
Excellent video! I couldn’t believe that this video was so saturated with animation vocabulary, with such attention detail to the different visual eccentricities! As an animator myself this make me super happy that even the smallest things don’t get overlooked, especially in such a unique and groundbreaking game.
Thanks so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it! I've many more animation study videos coming, so stay tuned! Do you have a portfolio or anything I can peruse of your animation?

You did a really great job with this! I happened to make a similar video that came out almost at the same time, but you really went into detail about the animation!
Hey, thanks ever so much! I'll have to check it out. Well I used to do more game design videos but plenty of other better RUclipsrs already cover that, so the animation aspect is my more natural angle.

@Onhyx27 Yes, something has happened and the video has de-synced at some point. I edited part of the video out (the intro) some years ago, but that's now caused problems. I need to look into it.
I love this. How many times can i say you made a great analysis? The critique of the games animation and visual style is very positive which makes one want to revisit the game.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Heck yeah. It's also going to be interesting that Chalice is joining for the adventure. First time i saw the trailer i thought that Cuphead and Mugman went back in time.

Fun fact: When i first have played this game i find very very VERY hardcore and difficult because the game was running on *24fps* like old cartoon animations... But i find put later that this was because of my crappy PC and the game run on 60fps with 640x480 resolution and the game become much more easier to me after but still challenging and fun. Lol

And any game that changes the color of an enemy not subtly is also too telegraphed. Quite simply put, the boss should not change its appearance. Show the attack through animation, nothing else. Hey you need to do your fact checking better. Cup head was in development for around 7 years. Straight from the wikipedia: "Cuphead was the first game by StudioMDHR, a Canadian indie game development studio consisting of brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer.[1] Additional animation work was contributed by Jake Clark, with programming lead by Eric Billingsley.[4] Its development began in 2010"
imgur.com/a/mfxg55N "This game took around four years to make." 10:16 mark. I'd suggest just adding in a correction with the closed captioning stating that it is actually seven years that the game was in development for.

You should cover Hollow Knight. It’s animation central :,)
It's in the schedule 😉
Great video, really enjoyed watching. What is that anime looking game with the female protagonist running with ninja or samurai sword at 10:25?
I think that's Muramasa Demon Blade!
The cartoons were also in the 1920s
That's right
Your channel is the bomb, you know that. But what's the game with the broom at 10:32
Thanks, and that's Dustforce.
Hey you need to do your fact checking better. Cup head was in development for around 7 years. Straight from the wikipedia:
"Cuphead was the first game by StudioMDHR, a Canadian indie game development studio consisting of brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer.[1] Additional animation work was contributed by Jake Clark, with programming lead by Eric Billingsley.[4] Its development began in 2010"
Oh, did I say it wasn't in for development for that long, or..?
You said it was only in development for four years, when it was actually six-
seven.
Oh, I think what I might have said was "it was in development for years"

"This game took around four years to make." 10:16 mark.
I'd suggest just adding in a correction with the closed captioning stating that it is actually seven years that the game was in development for.
Ahhh yeah, I was probably going off since the trailer or something. Thanks for the correction, and thanks for watching to the end!
I typed in nothing related to cuphead and found this
