The Airstan incident was an international incident involving Russia and the Taliban of Afghanistan in 1995 and 1996. On 3 August 1995, Taliban-controlled fighter aircraft intercepted an Airstan Ilyushin Il-76TD transport aircraft, with seven Russian nationals on board, forcing it to land at Taliban-occupied Kandahar International Airport. The men were held prisoner for over a year before making their escape; after overpowering their captors they re-possessed their aircraft, flying it to freedom.
This happened in 1996 when taliban took control on kandahar that was the last soviet cargo plane in kandahar when taliban chased it by mig 21 .......that's the real story
For people who say this isn't a real story: In that time Afghanistan had only two pilots, one on vacation and the other (the Mig-21 pilot) was the only available and it got previously trained by the CCCP itself and after that quitted and joined Talibans.
That MiG looked like one of the trainer variants Note the two seats and guy in back at 1:39. Small nosecone compared to the bis, Missiles were IR seekers judging by the black tips for the IR sensors. At 2:37 he was pulling the trigger for guns though which is weird. I'm pretty sure pretty much all MiG-21's carry an internal (but earlier externally mounted) GSh-23 cannon. Was in perfect range for a guns kill.

The film is based on real events. After spending one year in captivity in Taliban Russian pilots stole a plane IL-76 and flew to the United Arab Emirates. Navigator only one who said only one sentence full of meaning "Commander, he had fuel for 40 minutes"
People laughing at the "Taliban Airforce", Afghanistan during the time of President Najibullah had a strong army and air force. Equipped with Soviet fighter jets, when Taliban took over, most of those Russian trained pilots were forced to go to Pakistan and reconvert to Islam (become radicalized) so they could fly those planes against the Northern Alliance. Yes they had an airforce and real military.

At the time Afghanistan was controlled by the Taliban government and it was called Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. These planes were given to the Socialist Afghan government during the Soviet Invasion but after they left the Armed forces completely fell apart, the Taliban got hold of a lot of the Soviet jets to the subsequent fight the civil war
