  • It's ON! Australian spec BYD Dolphin Dynamic vs MG4 Excite 51.
    Who will be the winner????
The MG wins on bigger battery (both are LFP)
and Range (I've estimated the real mixed driving range... you'd get a lot more just going around town)
and Power (a lot more oomph from the MG4), which then equates to the MG4 being much
    Faster 0 - 100 km/h.... 7.7 seconds in the MG4, vs a sluggish (worse than my 30kw/h Leaf) 12.3 seconds of the Dolphin. It's a lazy Dolphin.
The Dolphin (primarily due to the smaller battery), wins on weight (1506 kg vs 2083 kg)... that's a Fat MG4. Needs a diet.
This translates into better efficiency from the Dolphin battery, as it doesn't have as much weight to try and push around. Imagine if they'd put a much stronger motor in there..... it would fly, or, er, swim.
DC fast charging isn't much different (note the Dolphin specs say from 30% - 80%, whereas the MG4 say 10% - 80%)
The infotainment screen is bigger in the Dolphin, and does it's rotating party trick... not sure how useful that ever is... tell me in the comments...
From watching a tonne of RUclips video's on the MG4, and seeing it live in a BYD Atto 3 and MG ZS EV, I think the Dolphin has better software. Not perfect, of course, but not as slow as the MG4... where at the moment you can't save your settings and need to do them again every time you get into the car (e.g. driving preferences, turn auto lane assist off). Maybe the Australian version will be much improved by MG... will have to wait for the real test drives and reviews to see. With the BYD software, it's also possible to install your own apps (e.g. RUclips)... not sure if that's a thing with the MG4.
Both have a smaller screen in front of the steering wheel, and the MG4's is slightly larger.
Boot capacity is very similar, with a slight edge to the Dolphin when the rear seats are down.
One thing on my Leaf, which I found to be very useful, is the 360 degree birds-eye view camera, and the Dolphin has this in it's base model.
The Dolphin has better seats... heated, electric adjustment, and fake leather.
The Dolphin also has Automatic Climate Control, whereas it seems (until someone corrects me) that the MG4 51 doesn't... you change it manually (via the infotainment or buttons on the steering wheel). Not a big deal.
Both have Adaptive Cruise Control and various other safety features.
Both have Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Both have Vehicle to Load, though the Dolphins is 3.3 kW vs 2.2 kW in the MG4... not sure what practical effect this has (less kettles boiling at once?)
Both have regen braking, which is standard on all EV's, but from what I've researched, the Dolphin doesn't have one-pedal driving like a Tesla.... it's more like my Leaf where you have to use the brake pedal as well, but the MG4 does apparently have one-pedal driving, which I think is an essential feature of any EV, now I've been spoiled driving a Tesla.... it's amazing.
Aesthetically, they are both quite different, of course, with the Dolphin having a glass panoramic sunroof and the MG4 having a rear spoiler. I think both cars look great... the MG4 is more aggressive and masculine I suppose.
The Dolphin has wireless phone charging, whereas the MG does not.
The Dolphin has metallic paint included in the cost (although with a very limited pallette of colours), versus paying $700 more if you want a metallic MG4.
The Dolphin has a BIG PLUS with OTA updates, whereas with the MG4 you need to take it to the dealer every time to update the infotainment software (and there'll definitely be quite a few updates, to both). Hopefully MG do OTA in the near future... it's so much better.
The Dolphin has a heat pump, which is also how it makes the car more efficient. The MG doesn't. Bit of a miss there.
MG have thrown 17" alloys onto their base car, and all the googling in the world couldn't show me what BYD have put on their Australian Dolphin Dynamic. It's important, as it really affects the range and drivability of the car.... if it's the cheap-ass crappy one's they put on the Atto 3, then a lot of people will be swapping those tyres very quickly.
And nearly finally, the Dolphin has Sat Nav as standard in the base model, whereas with the MG you need to upgrade to the Essence to get that, and a whole bunch more which are already standard on the base model Dolphin.
And really finally, one thing I didn't add to the list, was MG's 7 year unlimited km warranty, vs the shitshow that has been EV Direct's warranty and service costs (mainly the warranty). There goes my invite to test drive a Dolphin for a day. The warranty may well be the thing that pushes more people towards MG than BYD, because even though I think the base MG has cheaper parts and materials than the base Dolphin, it doesn't really matter if the company are going to take care of anything that goes wrong, for 7 years.

I've driven both these cars (in the UK) and we now own an MG4, so you're probably seeing where I'm going with this. The single absolute no-brainer deciding factor for me is rear wheel drive. It just doesn't work putting front wheel drive on an EV! We ran an MG ZS EV before the MG4, and currently also have a Kia e-Niro - both are front wheel drive, and both suffer from the same problem. They wheel-spin when you try and put the 200hp onto the road when pulling out of junctions, etc. The rear wheel drive MG4 is exactly the same power as our e-niro (200hp) but feels much more powerful, as all the power goes onto the road all the time! So, RWD all the way!!

On the safety front, Excite models don't come with blind spot or rear cross traffic alert which are both standard on the Dolphin. I don't agree that the Dolphin was originally planned to be $43k, that would make the Premium version too close to the Atto 3. At its current price of $45k, the Dolphin Premium is about $6k less than the Atto 3 Extended, which is very close to the difference in NZ.

    • @stormjuice

Yeah, MG spent their money on the battery and drive, not the fruit. BYD spent it on the fruit, not the battery or drive.
For the base, I'd go MG4 as Drive is more important than Fruit.
For the Dolphin Premium vs MG4 Essence, I'd go Dolphin as it's $6k more vs $9k more... even though it's still FWD and has a shitty warranty compared to the MG.

OTOH, European buyers are MUCH more interested in things like. driving experience, feel etc. No real surprise that BYD is having a tough time getting into the European market, they don't produce drivers' cars. And MG are doing spectacular things in Europe, even before the Cyberster goes on sale.
I really was quite intrigued by BYD when I first heard about them, but they don't produce a single model that would interest me whereas MG has 2 (4 & 5) that might persuade me and, if I had the money, the Cyberster would certainly be on my drive.

Both are a bloody compromise. To get out of the compromise you HAVE to spend $9k more (MG4 Essence) or $6k more (Dolphin Premium) to get everything (range/power AND features). In fact, thinking about it..... if you were to do a VS on the Premium Dolphin vs MG4 Essence, the Dolphin wins hands-down (except on warranty and being FWD).

Don't get excited about OTA updates. BYD have had to rely on this to fix the many problems with the Atto 3 as sold (still ongoing), but in reality every OTA update breaks as many things as it fixes. BYD support is non-existent - once they have your $$$, you're on your own. Hence the proliferation of Atto 3 facebook pages for owners to try and help each other fix problems.

    • @stormjuice

That's really good info, thanks. So I guess BYD don't test their software enough before rolling it out. That's never good.... make you scared to update. In my partners Tesla, we have 99.9% trust in doing the OTA's whenever they happen.
Still.... BYD 'seem' to have better sw than MG, from what I've watched, and read in the forums. Hopefully they sort it out (though you can use Apple Carplay/Android Auto in either car to bypass a certain amount I guess).

Great video Mr Stormjuice. About to sign on the dotted line for MG4. Personally the Atto 3 just a little too funky inside and Byd doesn't seem to have the footprint in Aus like MG should something go wrong/you need to speak with someone in person etc (along with limited warranty 6yrs/8yrs battery vs 7yrs umlimited kms). The LCD panel/screen is impressive on the Atto 3 and LFP battery a plus; though living in an apartment I might not have the option of dedicated charger for overnight charging, so the 145kw/h is going to be important for a 10 or 20min 'top up and go' when on a road trip with the MG4 (Atto 3 and Dolphin sub 80 kw/h so makes this a bit more painful). For me the Dolphin is a bit boxy/grandma car feeling so hard to compare it to the MG4 on the outside, but I'm sure it would be a great 2nd car/city runabout.
If going down the MG4 avenue (Essence...potentially even the long range variant) the two biggest fomo's will be the sexier/feature rich display panel and LFP battery (despite slower DC charging rates). Also my MG4 contact has almost $2000 of 'dealer charges' which leaves a bit of a nasty taste in the mouth (no that's not on road costs btw). Almost wipes out the state govt rebate. Anyone else experienced that?

    • @stormjuice

      Thanks Dezz!
I read on FB this morning about the issues with BYD support/service (e.g. cheap crap 12V batteries that can't handle winter here in Australia). Doesn't make me confident about buying a BYD here. Are MG any better though??? Their cars certainly don't seem to be quite at the same quality (fit/finish) as the BYD's. The LCD in BYD is impressive (software too), but no-one uses it in portrait... it's a gimmick.
The MG4 base model is also LFP. Dolphin stays LFP though in other specs, whereas MG goes NMC.
I like both car designs actually.... the gentle Dolphin and the beefy MG4. Then again, I drive a Nissan Leaf :) If people really just need a 2nd city car, then I'd just import a 40kwh Leaf from Japan for $25k.
I'll check on the dealer charges with my local MG dealer... that would definitely be a no... may as well get a Tesla Model 3, or import a 40kwh Leaf, if that's the case..... and wait for the Compact Tesla.

    • @haydezz
      @haydezz Год назад

@stormjuice Yeah interesting, coz the majority of reviews of the MG4 from EU/UK I've watched and seen has the quality being not too bad. Though that's more able the stability of the vehicle, robust sound doors when they close etc etc vs Byds range. Plastic fittings, shiny surfaces etc...yep but figure that comes with the price point.
Interesting your point RE 12V batteries. Hadn't considered so big ups for that 👍
Agreed about the portrait mode on byds models, unlikely to be used. Software feels quite feature rich though.
Basically an inner city/suburb driver with the occasional road trip so like the MG4 to negate narrow parks, weaving in tight spots but also keeping the style 😅
Thoughts on the Byd Seal? Tempted to wait till that arrives as looks a more polished/mature product than the Atto 3 or Dolphin (personal opinion anyway) despite being different shape/size/use cases. Let us know your luck with the local MG dealer and great work creating all this fantastic content 👌

I agree that (from what I've seen so far, in Atto 3 and MG ZS EV), BYD have better quality interior and software.

Fwd will not be better than RWD in the wet. Simple physics and plenty of experience will show that the rearwards weight transfer on takeoff will have a FWD car wheelspinning as weight comes off the front wheels even with moderate power application. Since you say better to the speeds indicated how could you measure throttle input unless at max value or some determined value was somehow set in the experiment.

Spot-on with the warranty - EVDirect lost a lot of customers due to their absurd, limited warranty when they released the Atto 3.
Much better the MG with a pretty straightforward 7/7 warranty; plus the service network for BYD is a shambles, and the service frequency/cost is ridiculous.

I personally view FWD RWD not really a big issue in normal passenger car
For handling the 50/50 weight distribution is what matter a lot and planted turn in manuavering
I drive RWD, manual, hand brakes, does those manual tricks, personally I think 50/50 balanced is priority over RWD or FWD. If it was a race car one certainly may want RWD or even AWD (gives wuickest launch) but a passenger car.
If BYD did design properly the car can easily be 50/50 for majority of the EVs they produce (shifting the lowest battery component backward or forward) instead of just for looks like MG have. And RWD
Sso for me Battery EV most critical priorities are ranked
      1. Battery chemistry

No rear wiper, centre rear headrest, grab handles, sat nav & heated seats / steering wheel on the UK base SE models are the reasons I would pass on the MG4. How does sunny Australia get a rear wiper on an MG4 & rainy UK does not? Also, without a sunroof the MG4 is very dark inside - no rear passenger lights either. Yes it has a low-ish starting price but to get most of the missing features you have to move up to the Trophy model which only has the LR battery (in UK) which pushes the price up to well over £33k. The Dolphin has not yet been fully released in the UK but I think it will launch this year with the two top Comfort & Design models which get the larger 60kW LFP battery/204bhp motor combo. The cheaper lower spec Active & Boost models get the 45kW battery & launch after the two top specs. Active gets 95bhp motor & the Boost gets 175bhp motor & Multi-Link rear suspension. UK prices are reported to be from £25.8k up to £32.5k - don't hold me to that because reported & actual release cars prices can differ quite a bit. Personally I think the Dolphin has the better interior.
    I think you're right. MG=Range, driving dynamics & external design vs Dolphin=Spec.

Totally agree... it's weird we get bugger-all rain compared to the UK (I lived there for 14 years all up), and yet we get the wiper.... maybe they listened to the feedback and the next models for the UK will also get it.

      thedriven.io/2023/06/23/day-the-dial-changes-byd-adds-surprise-hot-hatch-option-to-australias-lowest-cost-ev/
At the base models, the MG4 wins as Drive is more important than Fruit.
When you compare the MG4 Essence (Trophy) to the Dolphin Premium, the Dolphin wins as it is $3k cheaper (at $45k) than the Essence ($48k), and with 60kWh battery and 150kW motor. Only downsides of the Dolphin are being FWD and warranty nowhere near as good as the MG4.

So I could buy a Kona and drive it including maintenance for 5-7 years for the same cost as the purchase price of the cheapest EV. Or even more savings if I buy an MG3.
