My step dad never questioned their friendship and me and my brother were so lucky to not be in between a messy break up. When my Dad died my mum was in pieces as she lost her lifelong friend and the father to her children.

Unfortunately, media/society has given a false narrative that love has to look and smell a certain way (romantic, honeymoon stage) and that fosters a sense of disenchantment and disappointment when that initial romance stage morphs into something deeper.
A no.of marriages end up as the wife finds her husband immature and slowly the close relationship ends up for the female, a beginning of a brother/sister relationship. The wife matures more faster and earlier because of greater responsibilities than the spouse.
