I've only just come across this and it's bloody hilarious! Martin Freeman as Jonny Rotten. Matt Lucas as Sue Pollard. David Walliams as Ruth Maddox. Simon Pegg as Freddie Starr. Nick Frost as Willie Rushden. Sarah Alexander as Liza Goddard. All captured the personalities of the people they played perfectly. Nick Frost in particular because Willie Rushden really was like that in real life.
I remember finding this a bit weird and bizarre when this was first on TV, but now it's probably my favourite thing to ever come out of Comic Relief - the whole thing is underplayed genius. The best thing about it is the audience who sound absolutely baffled throughout and not understanding if they're watching a comedy or not, particularly at the end.
@@RossPatzelt You can tell it's canned if you listen when Wogan gets his spare mic out the laughter is the same one used in 90s BBC comedies like One Foot In The Grave and Brittas Empire.
This is a spot on parody. Wogan's lame quips, the send up of Freddy Starr and Hi-de-Hi, excellent Rotten, Rushton and Goddard impressions. The humour lies in the accuracy...a dead audience and awkward pauses are intentional, the whole thing is underwritten on purpose. A very talented cast poking fun at 80's prime time. Blankety Blank is enjoyable nostalgia and this is a warm nod to its kitchness. A couple of slightly obscure shows containing comedians appearing here: Matt Lucas in Catterick. Nick Frost and Kevin Eldon in Hyperdrive. Sarah Alexander in Smack the Pony.
The whole thing is a superbly hilarious parody. 'Lovely' Liza's inane wave and grin as the contestant is threatening them all - except her. Brilliant touch!
I love the fact that Terry and the audience can understand Willie Rushton perfectly ("you're skating on thin ice, Rushton") but the distracted insincerity of "I hope so too" does it for me. I presume "Yellow Reggae" is a Robert Popper (Robin Cooper) creation... A genuine cult classic!
OMG ! Never saw this before - absolutely brilliant. This looks as if it could have been penned by Peter Serafinowicz . Some of the dark humour and "jokes" aren't funny to the masses but if you are on the right wavelength it's gold. Made my day that, thanks for uploading.
Just watched an interview with Peter Serafinowicz, he co wrote it with Sarah Alexander (Liza Goddard) and his brother James. First time I've seen this!
The accidental insincerity of "I hope so too" still does it for me, I think everyone should watch this, a masterclass in comedy. I suspect our American friends below are judging the performances on the "audience" reaction; it's deliberately mute at times to aid the progression... I love the way that everyone perfectly understands Rushton's contributions. Encore!
This is the sketch that just keeps on giving - on rewatching for the 0000th time I just love the sublime "I hope so too" from Terry and the delivery of Terry's "Reggae" when it's revealed as if - "of course! We all forgot that" - eczamallent stuff!
The hallmarks of The Peter Serafinowicz Show are all here. An alternate reality of the television you know and love, but something is off in a really unsettling way. The sudden mention of suicide darkens the mood inappropriately, you think it's not going back there but then the rug is pulled right at the end. Nothing, and no one is safe in Peter's universe.
Nick Frost's Willie Rushton had me creased! And Simon Pegg's performance was good enough to remind me what a desperately unfunny prick Freddie Starr truly was.
This is so well observed, it perfectly showcases with great observation BBC light entertainment circa 1982/83. I'm sure Matt Lucas had a hand in writing this as he has a great affinity for this time period, just like Peter Kay. Love it.
@trydowave Liza is played by Sarah Alexander, better known for her roles in Coupling, Smack the Pony and Green Wing. She's also Peter Serafinowicz's (Wogan in this clip) wife.
i dont think there is more no it is a comic relief sketch so yeh they whould have probarbly put parts of it on throughout the night thats why the editing is a bit weird.
This is great comedy. It's all for charity (of course) ... but there's darkness here ... a pop at light entertainment alongside a respect for the genre, a nod at punk ... a kick in the balls for mainstream game shows, but looking at the audience also. Kevin Eldon in straight role (psycho contestent). teriffic work.
'Yellow Reggae' still cracks me up. But I did a search on Google, and it appears to be an actual thing, albeit not something that would merit being the top answer on Blankety Blank.
It's a brilliant little visual gag, isnt it? Took me completely by surprise, so think it might actually have made me laugh more than anything else in the entire sketch 🤣
Possibly the best Wogan in the business, perhaps second to Coogan, but that is debatable. This makes me feel like Partridge could have done a brief stint as the BB host. The ending reminded me of when Forbes McAllister was shot dead.
@MiszP2010 Lol yeh, just realised that xD - this vid was posted on my facebook and the actual video description seemed to show a different video description or something :/ dunno, confused me though but this vid is from 2003 Comic Relief :)

Just read David walliams autobiography 'camp David' and in this time he is suffering with severe depression he was suicidal as you can see he is really thin. Right at the end of this he didn't bow as he walked off backstage. No one knew about this until he wrote his autobiography years later, when I watched this i felt really sorry for him because he was hiding all of the emotions without no one to talk to. It's funny but sad to watch.
Johnny Rotten is played by Martin Freeman. He was from the Office and the movie version of Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. The one i don;t recognise is Liza.
Peter Serafinowicz's Wogan impression is amazing. If you just listen to the audio, you'd swear it was him.
Look up terry wogan d.j. Peter did a wind up on terry wogans radio 2 show on April fool's and played dance music.
The best Terry Wogan impression ever.
I genuinely keep forgetting I'm not actually watching Terry Wogan.
Applemask is
Unappreciated master work from martin freeman - he had Johhny Rotten perfectly
He's my favourite impersonation out of all of them.
Like an obnoxious school boy.
Lydon has the 'teeth issue' resulting in his distinctive pronunciation of the letter 's' - Freeman didn't even attempt it.
Terrible impression of Lydon... Rob Newman does a great JR, should've got him on. The Liza Goddard was bang on by Sarah Alexander though
One of the most underrated comedy sketches ever. Perfection.
Peter's impression is amazing. Close your eyes , it's Terry. Wow.
I mentioned this to Peter Serafinowicz at a book signing in 2012, and he had no idea what I was talking about
Strange, do you think he was trying to forget it? His was a brilliant performance, got Terry absolutely spot on.

Paul Putner steals the show!
What DID he see in the rear view mirror? Knowing Serafinowicz, the script probably described something awfully unsettling.
