      The principles of flight are the same for large planes as for small planes. Wind over the wings create lift and you need a fuel source. That’s basically it. So, don’t be afraid of small planes. Millions of flights occur every single day without incident.
      It’s rarely the plane that fails. It’s almost always pilot error. It actually takes a lot to bring down a plane. In this case, it was fuel starvation. In a nutshell, they ran out of gas because the pilots accidentally jettisoned the fuel instead of transferring it to the other engine.
      So, that’s my 2 cents. 🙂

    I was working on my instrument rating with a former airline pilot back in early fall of 1977 at Greenville Municipal Airport. We taxied past a Convair that had been sitting there for at least a few days. My instructor told me it was for sale for $90,000 but it had a bad jug in one of the radial engines, is what he said. It was old looking, but had an electric piano inside, and a sofa. It was like a charter plane. It sat there for a few more days I guess, then it was gone. Years later, I heard about the Skynyrd crash, and that it was on a Convair. It was the same plane.

    I met Ronnie in 1975. There was no fuel lost in transferring from one engine to the other. It's a myth. There was no fuel to transfer to the other engine. The transferring lever was found to be shut (never used) in the plane wreckage. The pilots found that the second engine was nearly empty, so when it ran out, they crashed.
    The NTSB ruled pilot error for failing to top off the fuel tanks, even though the gages on those old planes were not very reliable.

  • @laz288
    @laz288 5 лет назад +56

    Where do you guys get your data. Do you make it up? The pilots did not Jettison fuel nor did they not transfer fuel. Poor fuel management and monitoring was the reason for the crash. The bad engine did consume more fuel but leading up the final flight they fueled up along the way adding 200 gallons at one stop and a few hundred at another, etc. They did not do a visual fuel inspection and they poorly calculated the remaining gallons prior to the last flight.
    At least pull the NTSB report first. Makes me wonder how many other of your videos are accurate.

      Not to mention that when they run out of fuel they decided to leave the gear down by while crashing into trees. Instead of trying to land in the wide-open area and belly flop. Course it was probably a gun Sam that they were out of fuel or they would have all burned to death. Piss poor planning results in piss poor performance! Pilot error and incompetence killed the band.

    • @hammeredwithhorror
      @hammeredwithhorror 5 лет назад +8

      Exactly! The plane should have NEVER been allowed to take off. The fuel gauge was actually broken and had to be checked with a stick which they did NOT do! Their flight from Miami flames were shooting out of one of the engines and instead of hiring somebody to fix the problem the company leasing the plane wanted to use their own mechanics in Baton Rouge. In order to keep the engines going they were using an enriched fuel that burned faster than normal. So the decision to not stop in McComb,MS was what sealed their fate and it was 100% pilot's negligence to not know the fuel situation. Being out of fuel saved everybody from being burnt to a crisp! The leasing company should have grounded the plane straight away.

    Fun fact: the members of the original line up hated the idea of being labeled a “Southern“ band. Their goal was to become the Rolling Stones of the United States. It’s mostly geography that was used to typify them as “Southern.“ And much to the surprise of many people today, they were not “conservative“ artists. In fact, they were extremely progressive for their time. Aside from being long-haired Southern boys (long hair on men being considered taboo by crew-cut-wearing men at the time), they wrote songs about gun violence, environmental degradation, racial injustice, etc. Hell. They even rallied for Jimmy Carter! They wanted the South to break out of its backward-thinking ways on its own by championing the great people and ideas that the South could produce.
    The Confederate battle flag? That was foisted upon them by their management as a publicity stunt.
    Sweet Home Alabama? Mockery of the backward ways of many of their fellow Southerners.

    Not true about the death of Leon Wilkeson, whoever wrote the script needs to get the facts straight. He did not die from substance abuse.

    As 13 year old kid doing his paper route after school. I remember seeing the headline. It was like a kick in the gut and punch to nose. At the time I remember singing that smell in the back seat of my sisters car. She said Tommy. Be careful with partying. I said nahh. I want to live fast die you in and leave a good looking corpses. It was a saying back then. We enjoyed life. We just didn't respect it. When we lost Allen. I put the brakes on. Glad to say. I made it.

      @@joejohnston2035 What a weirdly aggressive and uniformed thing to say. Van Zant wrote those lyrics about the increasing reckless indulgences of the band members culminating when Gary Rossington crashed his Ford Torino into an oak tree.

    I was fortunate to see them live back in the 1970s at the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, PA.
    I was planning on seeing them again at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia where they were
    scheduled to appear, but their plane crashed just a couple of months before that.
