When I read books with very good illustrations on it, which I do most of the time, I tend to emulate those illustrations into painting after reading. I don't know but that one factor drives me crazy over painting things even everyday.
When I'm pressed for time, sometimes I'll sketch on the go, when I'm on the train or while waiting for a work meeting to start. It's not perfect, but daily practice is one of the number one things that helps you improve your skills.
Great tip Eric... as I’m progressing, I’m finding it better to paint in sessions. I love leaving a wash overnight. Firstly, it dries well and, as you say, I get fresh eyes on it but the real plus is I wake up excited and enthusiastic to take the next steps on the piece - never knowing how it’s going to turn out 😳😀 ... great fun! After many years chronically disabled with MS, this has added so much to my life... beyond words
Eric , i appreciate what you do. It’s very difficult at your time of life to actually have time for the things you WANT to do. I’m lucky I’m older ( or unlucky) so I now have the time . It’s a trade off. Young and busy, or old and lots of time. 🎨. From Tallahassee.
Hi Eric, Im glad you mentioned to us that taking a break now and then helps to see our work differantly. at times even finding mistakes we dident notice before. My art teacher also told us to once in awhile, look at our work in a mirror! by seeing it in reverce really brings the good the bad and the ugly up front ! like falty perspective, color imbalence, and subject placement. and if you find you hate your drawing, you can get satisfaction by taping it to the interstate freeway, and watching 4ooo cars and trucks run over it....Did you ever find that if you enjoy painting, the time seems to just fly by!!!
You’re right about binge watching taking up time. I fasted from Netflix in Jan and started painting daily instead. And wow, my skills improved so much. Now I am wary of starting any Netflix series. A movie or two with mt family but then I don’t binge watch a series anymore and dedicate more time to art. It is way more satisfying.
That's great to hear 😊 sometime if I really want to know the story of a show, I usually just watch like a summer from a RUclips video or something 😂 saved me a lot of time.
I also have a day job but only one child. I art in the evenings after my son has gone to bed by 8:00pm. I don't art every evening but when I do I might watch a DVD or listen to an audiobook. I sometimes put on CDs of birds, whales or weather. I'm going to art this evening. Looking forward to it.
Your videos are the BEST!!! You are always my first go-to for any questions I have about watercolor painting. Hands-down, the very best! Really appreciate your humility, honesty, soulfulness of being a watercolorist. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts and talents - and thank your wife and family for sharing your time. Your videos and you are such a blessing. Being an introvert myself, it's not hard to imagine the energy these draw from you. Thank you so, so much!
Same for me Eric. I have never watched any of the shows that you mentioned. I refuse to get sucked into watching series. I do love movies though. Well, good ones at least. I have always said to people who say, "I don't have time." "We all have the same time. 24 hours in a day. How we chose to use our time. That is what makes the difference." "If you truly love life don't waste time; for time is what life is made of." Bruce Lee
I think that one suggestion you had in another video-perhaps the one about your studio-was that its important to have a dedicated space to paint. That saves setup time and provides more time to paint.
I definitely needed this advice . its been 1 and half year since I have stopped (binge) watching shows and dramas online or on TV and now I have a lot of time to do things I like but I am Lazy or lose motivation.
Wonderful tips! I’m looking forward to your loose watercolor video. As a beginner I tend to be super anxious about what I’m doing and so afraid to let watercolor do what watercolor is supposed to do and then I’m less happy with my results because my paintings look too stiff and fussy and don’t have the loose, washy qualities that I love. 🙄. I’ve gotta learn to loosen up (and not just with watercolor) 😄
Thank you for reminding us! Every morning, I plan for what I am going to do that day and try to accomplish them! I need to spend more time to practice on painting!
Very wise to skip TV, however, Breaking Bad was worth the time. Sometimes I am too tired for painting in the evening and at times I have trouble to fall asleep after sitting 1 or 2 hours under the daylight lamp.. that makes it tricky. Thanks for your videos, always a pleasure to watch.
As a beginner, before mastering enough skills, I found practicing following finished watercolor paintings from Pinterest is easier; directly painting following pictures, I tend to paint to be realistic. Just like you demonstrated in one other video, haven’t had the ability to simply the unnecessary details. Is that a bad habit to practice other artists’ finished ones? Thank you
Thank so much Eric ,just un this moments I'm tires with Homework ,I'm studing platic arts in the university and i didn't find the sufficient time ti práctice my favorito tecniche watercolor ( excuse me for my spelling mistakes ) I talke spanish I see your videos from Bolivia
Eric, how much practice in a week is essential to be good at watercolour? I spend almost 14 hours outside for a full time job and can sit once or twice a week with my painting.
😊yes, yoy have right,i don,t like tv also, but i,m women and i,m maried, and my time is sooo runing,i dont have inaf, but in winter,i play with my darling brush, and i,m sooo hapyyy!!! THAKS for you time!
Artistically 101 it’s hard, especially after a day of work and obligations, many of us are tired for painting 😅 so sometime rearrange schedule can help.
Don't give yourself the pressure to finish a painting in one sitting. What other tips do you have to find time to paint? =)

That'll be the best, but I am not painting daily :P should try to do that more

For me its a mental thing and that comes and goes - but I do like the way that you are open to discuss these issues - Thanks Eric
Thank you Eric! Very helpful!

Learning so much from you Eric. Thank you with much appreciation.
Very valuable....👍🏻
Thank you for this golden tip.
Every morning I get up dermining to do some painting last many days and I fail to do so .Today I have got tip from u.Thanx for ur this video.
Thank you Eric. I dont seem to be able to lift the brush since the lockdown. I still enjoy watching your videos.
Daphne Chia don’t worry, come back to it when you are ready. You can also just play with brush and paint, no need to paint something specific
Lots of wisdom here!! We're so happy to have your channel 😊

Thank you for sharing this tips that speak about the kind of person you are 🙂. I also enjoyed very much the one where you talked about motivation.
I just love your encouraging tips.
Yvonne King thank you! So glad it’s encouraging to you ☺️
You're the best! I'm learning a lot from you! Please continue making these videos. Helps a lot of beginners like me. 🤩🤩🤩

Every morning, I plan for what I am going to do that day and try to accomplish them! I need to spend more time to practice on painting!
If I'm struggling to juggle my time around I do one simple thing... I watch one of your videos and I'm inspired again... Its that simple.
Ooh. Loose painting - perfect timing! I am trying so hard to get loose and just not getting it so will be watching, guaranteed. Thanks for your wisdom
Thank you

I know, I heard Breaking Bad is one of the few shows that's consistently good from start to finish! :)

Thank you for this tips!!!
Wow😯 high-discipline is the key...

Not- not even Battlestar Gallactia??!!?? Just kidding - very good advice!
Oh nooooooo! I have to give up candy crush... ok, I'm retired. I have time. I paint every day or draw out my projects. Loving the journey.
hahaha, Candy Crush is fine :P

Everyone is different. I paint maybe twice a week depend on how busy my week is. Work at your own pace. Do what you can =)
@@Cafewatercolor thanks Eric for your suggestion

It's sad how much time I say I don't have, but it's me just not making time for painting.

My 2 favorite artists you and shibasaki. Both Asians!
I love Shibasaki San too =) he's like everyone's grandpa :D
Yes, TV can be a huge time waster.
Thank you for this video, it was lovely. Do you have an instagram account I can follow?
