Inspiring words. The one thing I find blocks me is to think I need a good 2-3 hrs chunks of time to do art or it won’t be worth it. Ask the set up takes time. Thank you for your advice and down to earth delivery

So well said, Louise. I am retired and can usually spend as much time as I want in my art studio - I have a dedicated space. I now realize that all those years when I didn’t make time to do art on a regular basis really did affect my well-being and therefore affected all the people I was prioritizing my time for. So, make the time for yourself and notice the effect it has on your joy and peacefulness and how that affects all areas of your life.

Lately I believe more that thinking about getting going, pulling supplies & paints out shuts me down. Then I think of clean up, acrylics messy to clean up. And YES I do know I am making excuses!

I find that setting reasonable goals for myself in consideration of my season of life is really important- right now I also have two young kids, a full time job, and I am launching a private practice. My art is crucial to my mental health but it’s also difficult to break out the paints- the fact that I have to put everything up and out of reach is a barrier- if my painting and paints and supplies could stay out it would be more accessible and I’d sit down in front of my painting more often- but alas, kids and toddlers. With all of it in mind, I have a goal currently to sit down on Saturday nights for an hour or hour and a half after the kids go to bed to work on a piece. When I’m down to just one job and my kids are older, I know I will make more time- I have always made time for art and will continue to do so- I just need to be gentle with myself and set goals I can reach. Best of luck to all my kindred spirits trying to keep their art alive!

Is there any way you can switch to a medium that is safe to leave out? Like a sketchbook on your desk/table and then a jar (or lockbox, depending on how mischievous your kids are) of pencils, markers, brush pens, and/or gel pens that you can just grab from when you sit down. Or maybe digital art - there are lots of free or cheap drawing programs for tablets.

@@pendlera2959 you know I actually impulse purchased some oil pastels about 6 months ago that I forgot about, that would for sure be a great option for nights with a tighter schedule- great idea!

Hello, Louise, I can't tell you how much I needed to hear your comments today about prioritising ourselves and our art. Also, carving out small amounts of time. Looking forward to your coming videos and courses.

This was so timely! Thank you Louise. You spoke directly to my soul in terms of how to time manage creative time, and putting that need and expression first. It is always strange to realise how typical we all are in our thoughts and habits. Your words made complete sense to this typical artist.

I still paint in my kitchen, so the interruptions are many and I haven't found my flow yet, but I'm working on it. Mostly, I prep two or three things in the evening after dinner, and carry on the next day after the school run. Most of the time, it works, but when things get busy, i feel guilty over everything. Weird balance job, really.

Thank you again! I have a some of both side you spoke to. Currently, I have time carved out (more than ever) and space (more than ever) and I am finding that I am only painting for a small amount of time per day and sometimes I'm doing other related activities to get ready for open studios. I think I have been feeling a little guilty (only a little... but still ...) about spending so much time on art (2 to 4 hours most days of the week). I'm finding that I'm actually painting for about 1/2 to 1 hour of that time. So good to hear your perspective.

So true, I love your ideas. One thing I can also do here, is attend art group gatherings, where folks gather to paint and fellowship. Not classes, just gathering and painting. Joining artists “work” groups helps a lot and lifts the spirits.

Thank you so much for this needed video. I'm in a similar position as Declan, with full-time work and caring responsibilities. I do try to put a few brush strokes on paper which I have laid out, whenever I have 20 or 30 mins it prompts me to stop and add further brush strokes or markings to keep me going. It does help, however, I think I do need to remove the big expectations I have placed on myself 😊

Guilty pleasure - oh yes, those words resonate! But why do I feel guilty about dedicating time to something I enjoy, something that makes me happy, even if it may never result in creating masterpieces or increasing my income, when hubby never feels guilty about dedicating time to following his favourite football team - something which not always makes him happy, and certainly doesn't improve his finances?!

Exactly- don't just leave it at asking the question. Actually start shifting this belief. You are both entitled to have fun doing things you love :)
