You've probably heard of Roald Dahl's famous BFG, but did you know there's actually a BUNCH of these across world mythology? Giants that aren't destructive, but benevolent? Builders, caretakers, life-givers, and more?

My brother almost killed me one day by saying
"He's called the BFG because if you saw him you'd say "That's a BIG FUCKIN GUY"
😅😂😂😂😂 huh haa
Giants in my story are neither evil or gentle, they're neutral forces keeping the gates between layers of reality. Although some of them are more willing to let one cross between the worlds. Others will make your visit to them your last.
Oop! Shiiiiit. That sounds insane and I love it!!
@@KayBbyXOXOXO wanna know more? The giants are actually wizards.

@@Pinkywinkykinky I'm actually thinking about making a book, but the giants don't really play a role on it right now, it's just lore for future books 😅
I love the Iron Giant. Since I was a child, that movie has been one of my favorites
Or maybe the Martian robot from Courage the Cowardly Dog. All he wanted to do is be accepted by his people and create little whittled deer.
It's probably my favorite depiction of the 'Gently Giant' trope. This movie could be quite simple, but I loved it as a kid
As a person who used to be bullied because of my big size and autism, a story of a gentle giant is one of my favorites. Unlike most folklore and fairy tales about giant from my country, where they are always depicted as evil antagonist, a story about a gentle giant that helping humanity is very deep to me because they have a big heart bigger than their size.
I have a friend who's huge and autistic and he's the best guy I've ever met

I was bullied for my small size in school, and later found out I had Asperger's in middle school. Unfortunately, in what I now realize was an attempt to mask my autism, I was a massive dick to everyone at school. It caused some problems down the road, but I now suppose I'm more like Bilbo Baggins these days. I'm pretty reclusive, and prefer to stick to my small friend group and work from home in the country away from all the other people who dislike me, perfectly content to maintain my house and gardens away from the noise of the world, in an environment that suits me better. Nothing sentimental, just wanted to share my story. Take care person who's read this, and thanks for listening :)

OH MY GOD! IS THAT ANIMATED INTRO NEW?! IT’S BEAUTIFUL! GOOD JOB TO THE ANIMATORS!
As someone interested in giants coexisting with society, this is exactly what I needed.
I've been looking for stories where a giant or giantess protagonist is literally worshipped as a deity for his or her heroic deeds, I could barely find anything.
@@deontaeavila3514 Why not write one :)
There is always something endearing about character that are bigger or stronger than you, even if it only through the means of objetive or subjective power but, they use it gently and sometimes wisely. The aspect of caring even for the smaller ones gives a certain light of hope that advantages may not corrupt you and makes you feel protected. So heartwarming.
You put my exact feelings into words, thank you

I love the idea that giants are a metaphor for humans and what they would do if they had the power to take whatever they want. Of all the giants in the book, only one of them decided to do the right thing
I love giants. When I was a kid, my mom often put up the animated BFG movie to us on VHS. So when I started my world, I wanted to add giants in some way. They were an ancient race, made before even the elves arrived. Every forest has been planted by them. When the smaller races appeared, they protected them. They kept a strong and kind peace and ruled in only the loosest meaning of the world. But giants aren't remembered as the kind hearted lads and lasses they were. They are remembered as the men-eating kind. A group of a relatively small but ambitious race sought of a way they could seize power for themselves. The humans fought, and now the giants are extinct.
I love the idea of something stronger and bigger than us helping and guiding. Not in a deity way, but in a pure empathetic way. What structures would they leave behind? And what if that protection is lost? Giants are one of those fantasy races that have been depicted on so many spectrums that you can do nearly anything with them and they still feel undeniably as giants.
I like the idea of them planting forests, as well as digging rivers like humans would dig a ditch, and maybe piling up mountains to get rocks out of their way. Just the idea of giants being a personified geological force appeals to me. Ooh: Idea I just had: Giants can't swim or cross deep bodies of water well, (or are otherwise bound to their land) so different islands/continents have different geologies as a result of cultural differences between the giants.
Other idea: Giants often make terrain more suitable to humans, but in some cases humans mess up the giant's style, causing the giants to try and undo the "errors" made by humans, sometimes with destructive consequences, leading to some conflict. Might be a little too "respect nature or die" which has already been done with Ents and Godzilla and whatnot, but "respect nature because someone worked hard on that nature and doesn't want you touching their stuff" could be a fun take on it.
Edit: also, the most successful cities are those who have learned to mimic the giant's preferred styles, and thus earned their favor and sometimes aid, as well as preventing conflict.
Your vocabulary is immaculate bro. You're one of the most articulate people on RUclips and the subjects you talk about are so interesting to me. Underrated channel.
Ever heard of Pastra my friend?
Giants are one of the most beloved concepts in my life as a storyteller. My father was a really big man and he died when I was little. I miss when he held me and t gave me a love for giants I carry often in my stories and art.
They stand as beloved monoliths that can't interact with the world regularly, but still want to be a part of it without destroying it despite their might.
I've always seen giants as just really big humans just like us. The BFG just kinda had me fixed on that opinion. I'm getting tired of all the Goliaths and Ogres. I just wanna see more BFGs that are just being them, is it too much to ask?
What if the take on ogres would be a more unique and interesting one, not limited to brutish man-eaters? Or perhaps Cyclopses, for that matters. In Greek Mythology, for example, the three Cyclopses Arges, Brontes and Steropes were the original three blacksmiths that forged the weapons for the gods during the Titanomachy.
@@jurtheorc8117
Ooh, I love your brain!!!!
@@Quilly-Sammy Well you can't have it, it's mine.
in terms of interesting portrayals of ogres: i once read that the giant in the story of Puss in Boots, the shape-shifting on, was technically an ogre. And according to some stories, the dude was pretty rich as well, having servants and all that. I guess that comes with owning a castle.
So from that, i reckon a base could be laid for a take on ogres that are more magically inclined.
WHICH does remind me of an old, 1600s-ish story by name of Gargantua and Pantagruel. The titular main characters are both giants and of noble descent. Or at least, they have power, wealth and rulership.
@@jurtheorc8117I’ll get it one day! You can’t stop me!
A giant dying and creating the world reminds me of The Boiling Isles in The Owl House. The titan's corpse serves as the isles the witches live on and allows life to grow on it's ancient corpse.
I can't be the only person who hears BFG and thinks of something else. Something maybe more shooty and green.
Guilty.
I would love to see more heroes that are members of more monstrous races like Giants, Trolls, Orcs, Goblins etc
Imagine a story about a giant who isolates themselves because they are so terrified of what their strength and magnitude could do to humanity
"Sometimes Giants are the building material"
Me: Like in attack on titan?
"In Norse mythology, the giant ymir.."
Me: Oh shoot, inspiration alert!
Giants in my world are what you would call mountain elementals. They represent them more or less. Calm wanderers that keep humans as pets sometimes because we look adorable, and remain mostly in the north, and while they have a society based on “we are so big literally nothing is a threat” and hence have become highly moral and stoic, when they grow old they also get dementia and become dangerous, hence the many myths of heroes slaying feral giants.
Sounds lovely and heartwarming. i apologize if it's rude to compare, but i am slightly reminded of the Titans from the game Brütal Legend. they were not the first creatures to inhabit the world of BL, but they *did* bring with them great technological and spiritual (by way of music) development-- eventually leading to ascension into heaven, where they became gods.
They also adopted a species of demons, known as the Tainted Coil, as their pets. The story isn't *as* uplifting from here, though:
The Tainted Coil were survivors of a primeval flood that destroyed the world, and they adored their masters so much that they started wearing painful, restrictive garments to try and emulate the perfect shapes of their masters.
There's a LOT more lore to Brütal Legend, and it's definitely worth exploring on your own. The entire game is a love letter to Rock and Heavy Metal, the value of having someone around that can set things in motion, someone who is there to help others, and the humor, love and personality radiates through.
If it's specifically the lore you seek, then look up The Legends of Brütal Legend on YT. That should be all the tales of the lore stones that can be found in the game.
I've begun making stories and when I make a giant character I try to look at how they look at things around them from their perspective. I had one story with a giant who was deathly afraid of humans because there is one of them and many humans while in another story I had multiple giants the size of mountains and a giantess who count become invisible and loved watching humans develop over countless years while keeping huge monsters away to avoid having it all destroyed just out of curiosity and was believed to be a deity.
I love Both of those ideas.
Your telling me bfg doesn't stand for big fucking gun??
He can make one to ward off hell and ruin. Giant is standin for NEUTRAL powers we cant fathom yet
Your sponsor today is exactly what I needed. Thank you. 😅 Alright. Back to listening. I've always loved your videos. Thank you today! 😌
The myth of Ymir's corpse being the source material for Midgard (muscle tissue to soil, blood to water, bone to rock, hair to plant life, etc.) and its parallels with the same happening to Pan Gu/Pan Ku and even the serpent Tiamat in the Mesopotamian Enuma Elish, is an archetype called the "world-parent" myth.

One of my favorite portrayals of giants as benevolent builders is the Giants of Seareach in the Thomas Covenant Chronicles by Stephen R. Donaldson. Also, he gave them all brilliant and distinct personalities.
"Stone and Sea!"
Donaldson gave us the greatest portrayal of these creatures in all literature. No other author comes close IMO. I used to read the original 6 Thomas Covenant books every year or so. One of the best fantasies ever created. 👍

I adored the stories of Roald Dahl as a child; the BFG was one of my first and most favorite. In his worlds, my differences had value and my dreams had validation, unlike the conservative and repressive world I lived in.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who wants giants who aren’t just killing machines
Theirs a few creatures commonly depicted as bad that also have many good representations of them. Namely Dragons and Werewolves. Dragons back in the day weren’t simply Giant fire breathing lizards, many were but not all. The Tarasque of French Lore was a Dragon but was a giant monster that was a cross between a turtle, Lion and snake. A Patron Saint tamed the invincible monster and brought it to the city it was terrorizing but the citizens still fearing the monster killed it in a surprise attack. Quetzalcoatl was a god of creation and despite not knowing much about it we can tell it was deeply loved and respected.
Werewolves had a rocky back and forth. The were a Celtic belief and weren’t viewed with fear in the beginning. They were protectors of humanity who killed witches, demons, saved souls. Humanities defenders but when foreign powers took control their was a lot of conflict because they didn’t respect wolves nearly as much and saw them as evil monsters. Besides that Christianity wrestled with the very concept because they thought it was absurd that people could just turn into wolves, but through god everything is possible, but why would god turn people into wolves? The Celts say they protect humanity so maybe that’s why God would? But wolves are evil, maybe it’s actually a punishment. Eventually the church agreed Werewolves are possible but only as holy protectors. It’s a concept I’ve never seen explored but the concept of Werewolves not being cursed people but people blessed with power they use to save humanity from cosmic and supernatural evils.

I love the giant story archetype. They can either be great warriors or terrible tyrants given the story they find themselves in.

Been working with Giants or rather Jotunn in my own work. my Jotunn are basically superior giants, more mystical and tied to the primal elements. There are not simply Fire and Frost Jotunn but Mountain Jotunn, Sea Jotunn, and even Sky Jotunn. Obviously inspired by Norse Myth, they descend from Ymir who they all refer to as Father due to him being their creator with some even personally viewing him as a fatherly figure. Ymir was also the caretaker for the World Tree, ensuring it was kept safe and grew well. That is until Odin came in and slew him, earning him the Jotunn's Ire and the title of Father Killer from them.
The story itself takes place in a world Post-Ragnarok where it went worse than expected and killed more of the gods and left the remaining Jotunn in Diaspora. Now they've taken to living amongst other people, amongst others as parts of certain communities. We see their positive side through the eyes of one of the Jotunn who made it through Ragnarok and the reign of the Norse Gods.
I gotta read this story
@@xyro3633 Thanks, hope you read it once it eventually comes out
I've actually *long* had the idea in my head of a Norse mythology story with protagonist being a female *Jötun* because I've *long* been sick of American pop culture, among *other* ways of butchering Norse culture and mythology, taking the free will the Jötnar have in Norse mythology, and all the nuance they have that comes *with* it, and *sweeping* it away to portray them as generic evil monsters! I wanted to write a story that shows the *true* nature of the Jötnar; *every bit* as free willed and nuanced as we *humans* are.
Also, fun fact that may come in handy when writing *your* novel, when you read the myths of the *female* Jötnar and their interactions with the gods VS the stories of the *male* Jötnar and their interactions with the gods, it suggests that the Jötnar are biologically *matriarchal* ; as in, the *women* are the bigger and stronger sex (that doesn't mean men can't rise to positions of power among them, as evidenced by Útgard Lóki being the king of Útgard).
@@ezrafaulk3076 Very interesting. Haven't heard too much specifically on female vs male jotunn in my findings on the mythology. I would enjoy hearing more
@@Master_E444 well, in the stories of their encounters with *male* Jötnar, like the story of the building of Ásgarðrs wall, the story of Thjasi's theft of Idúnns apples, and the story of Þórs retrieval of Mjólnir, the story of his duel with Hrungnir, the story of his visit to Útgardr, and the story of the time a Jötun and his daughters tried to *kill* Þór, in *every single one* , the gods ultimately didn't *hesitate* to at least *try* to kill the male Jötnar.
*But* , in the story of the Mead of Poetry, after stealing it from the dwarves that brewed it by fermenting honey in Kvasirs *blood* , the Jötun Súttung had the Mead of Poetry *guarded* , a job that requires a great deal of *physical* strength (size and physical strength *matter* in a fight); and *who* did he set to guard it? His *daughter, Gúnloð* . And instead of trying to *fight* her for it, Oðin *seduced* her to get it.
In the story of Skaðis marriage, Skaði, realizing the reason her father hadn't returned after leaving in pursuit of Lóki was because the gods must've *killed* him, set out on her way to Ásgarðr to *avenge* him; and when Heimdall spotted her approaching the gate via the Bífrost, he alerted the other gods, and when they met her at the gate, even though they outnumbered her more than 10 to 1 ( *literally* ), instead of trying to *fight* her, they offered to pay for her fathers death with a hefty weregild; and when she instead said that the only thing *short* of bloodshed that'd appease her would be if she could take one of their men of *her* choosing for her husband, and could make her *laugh* , they *conceded* to that (granted, they added the condition that she pick her husband from among them by only looking at their *feet* , which's how she ended up picking *Njörðr* instead of Balðr, but they still conceded); this implies that the *female* Jötun Skaði, was so damn *strong* , that even though they *vastly* outnumbered her, the gods actually *feared* a clash with her believing it to be *suicide* .
And *finally* , there's the story of Balðrs funeral; when the gods were so wracked with grief that *none* of them, not even *Þór* , could muster the *physical* strength to push Balðrs pyre ship into the water, they summoned a *female* Jötun to do so for them!
So there you have it; whaddya think?
That animated intro was perfectly in-line with the feel of the channel. 🤖📚
It's a more modern story, but The Owl House series.
The demon realm that the show takes place in: the boiling isles themselves are the corpses of the Titans. Literally. Get high enough up and you can see the corpse laying out before you, grinning skull and all.
You can watch the show yourself to see how friendly they were. (Do it's a good show)
This makes me think of that giant in the trailer of Hellblade 2 we got (can’t wait for that to finally come out) he was portrayed as a sympathetic creature, clearly in pain yet Senua still felt that she needed to kill it to “break the god’s siege of her mind.” The fact that the giant and the gods are all part of her dealing with her psychosis would probably be enough to fill a video of it’s own.
First time catching the new intro animation, very very cool, I dig it.
This was a particularly lovely episode
in my current story project, the giants arent necessarily the form we would recognize, but they fill the role of majestic, wise, and powerful giants. Since the book is from the perspective of birds, the giants are the great eagles, so part of why they fill that role is because of personal associations with eagles.
they arent mythological, but they choose not to live with the smaller birds because they prefer the freedom of the skies and mountains over the confines of forests and constructed settlements. They are revered as a very wise species, but mostly they are simple in desire, and dont talk much, giving others the impression that they know what they truly want and that the few things they say must be truly worth listening to.
Every time I think of this book, I end up thinking about that moment with the BFG having to tell the little girl how loud is too loud for him when she wants to talk to him while on his shoulder(?) until she got the right volume down
how do you do your vocals? I love the way you sound at least through my headphones you are crisp, and sound like you are coming from every direction like the audio is giving my ears a hug.
Jaguar D. Saul from One Piece and the giants of Elbaf are going to be some of my favourite friendly giants
It is interesting that the Titans from ATTACK ON TITAN including the lore and giants themselves correspond with the legend of giants that was mention in video.
In the first half of story the Titans were depicted as giant maneater monster that lead humanity of Paradis on the brink of extinction, but (SPOILERS) as the story continue it is reveals that the Titans are actually people, given how they look human-like except for their exaggerated facial feature and strange movement, made into monster by human of Marley because Ymir Fritz, the first Titan and descendent of Eldian race. Ymir Fritz, who was rumored that she had gotten the power from the earth itself, have done disastrous act upon the world for the prosperity of Eldian Kingdom and past down the ability of shifting to her descendent, but the end result cause the persecution of the Eldian viewing them as monster. Also another power of the Eldian, other than Titan shifting, is a hardening ability which was used to created the very walls of Paradis. The Nine Titan Shifter, who retain their sentience after shifting, have greater control over this ability especially the War Hammer Titan.
I'm early!!!!! I absolutely lovet the concept of big friendly giants, and I think the fact that they're seen as cannibals usually could suggest that imagination was at one point seen as a bad thing.

I know this is going in a tangent, but "big friendly giant" is an usual association that people make about my friend M. I sometimes I wonder if living associated with this idea would be a heavy burden. Having to meet the expectation of always being kind, of always being there to support those who are apparently more fragile. Being always the reliable one, the responsable one. I sometimes wonder if he had fell the need to repress sadness in order to fulfill this role that has been assigned?
The BFG was (and still is) one of my favorite books as a kid. He was just so adorably ignorant and funny.
In The Wheel of Time, there's a race of big, long-lived people called the Ogier. They are famous for their lifelike stonework, but their true passion and power is making plants grow. For the most part, they are gentle--unless you manage to make them mad to the point of violence, at which point it'd be a miracle if you survived.

Wow! A new intro!
I like giants and, I must admit, I have a liking for evil and sadistic giants who destroy everything in their paths, but I'm also a content creator.
I often imagine giants destroying humanity because of all the bad stuff that we humans have done and allow the ecosystem to start over.
But as a content creator and even though I didn't realize it before now, I also really like the idea of a creative giants who show their creativity to the world and help with building the world as it is.
And not just buildings and stuff, but also creative ideas and concepts. Maybe if these kinds of giants would have been real, our society wouldn't be as messed up as it is.
It would be another way to imagine a different society than ours without going the "killing all humans" route. But both of these paths are interesting for fictional worlds.
The moment you mentioned giants as building materials, my first thought was Ymir.

Recommend reading Cloven Country. It's a history of places in the UK saaid to have been constructed by the Devil, but expressly it makes connection between the devil in these myths and the giants of the old myth.
The first giant that came to my mind was Rumblebuffin, from The Chronicles of Narnia, though apparently, most Southern, also called Narnian, Giants are kind, though not known to be clever. This contrasts with the Ettins, who were extremely unintelligent and violent, and the ones of Harfang, who seemed all nice and gentle... except that they eat sapients, including humans, and only don't eat Marshwiggles like Puddle-glum due to flavor and texture, much like we humans avoid eating some animals for those reasons.
