Pewds has a really good point about self-help books. They help some people, but not all because each one contains a philosophy that's tailored to the author of that book. For example, you can be told that "procrastination is bad, it should be stopped via X, Y, and Z" and easily understand why, but to actually learn the discipline required to combat it is entirely a different battle that won't be won by reading a self-help book about it. At the end of the day, I think we just need to get out there and read more, experience more so that we can develop our own self-help guides. (But that's just my self-help philosophy! Please reply if you disagree--I'd love to hear from those whose lives changed because of picking up a self-help book.)

I guess I read so many other books that were in part influenced by this book that it didn’t feel new and fresh, but I can understand why it was such a hit when it come out and that inspired new writers so I have a huge respect for it!

Reading broadens the horizon on so many levels and you can really dive into the existential questions of our existence and our condition. I also agree on reading fiction! My fave from the last I've read was Paul Auster's New York Trilogy. It has some lengths in it but is totally worth reading. An incredible examination of the question of self and identity.
