As always you inspire me to get in with some asoect of patchwork. Im sirt of organised but this video has inspired me to move on from " sort of orrhanised" to much better! Theres a tgerspeutic element in doing anything like this. Also, if anything happens to me and my quilting stache has to be sonehow passed on, it will be in an organised usefulness and not just untidy bits of fabric thst might just get thrown out silly nilly. Im certainly goingg to cinsider a postage stamp quilt to be asembled " as and when".....so, .........! Thank you for your as always well explained yet not strung out, helpful offering!
Interesting - - I had come to almost the same organizational idea - - right down to marketing the things I pre-cut ... I have a friend who owns a thrift store (fun place to buy shirts) ... anyway, since I have a plan for where I want to be in three years, I do not want to just dump a bunch of bins of odds and ends on her. God has provided with me with some pretty amazing friends that can help each other make the transition with my stuff to their benefit (which will be passed on to others) ... I am looking forward to see how close we come to what I have envisioned. God is good!
New subscriber here and loving your tutorials and beautiful quilts. Great ideas for scrap organization. I'm going to follow your recommendations because my way certainly isn't working. Lol Blessings to you and yours. 🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻
Sue, I love all the quilts you make on RUclips. My organization is a little different because I mostly do the QAYG method. That’s because creating a whole large quilt is too hard on my shoulders.and adding the backing is rough on my back. I have limited space as I live in an apartment but I wrap and stack my fabric like you do. Mine is in an armoire. What I am finding is that if I want to pull something from the middle or farther down, it pulls the rest out. Lately I discovered an extra shelf that Is in my walk-in closet so I will stand up my fabric which will make things easier and give me extra room in the armoire to stand that fabric up also. Have a good week!
Do you pull fabrics out for kits? Scrappy layer cakes, baby quilts, i-spy, for when you just, want to sew. Put a note in for what is missing and check it off. Do you make binding sets, to go with watever you will need later? Are you doing potato chip blocks too, use some 2 1/2" bits? Do you have enough f9r your own scrappy jelly rol, sew end to end, or put in small contrast squares? And roll up 2 strips from the middle, so you are rready to sew. Do you like scrappy piano key borgers? Sew it, foll iy and cut to length as needed? 10 1/2" maes 3× 3 1/2" strip for blocks, 10" makes 2× 5×10, 4 strips, 4 squeres or 9 3" squares... are you wanting slightly arger to finish something quicker? Do you have a relaxing kit n a bag, for when ou have time to read, slow stitch, sunglases case tea or coffee mug rug, hot or cold bowl cosy?
Lots of questions here. I don't make kits at all. I have all my various sized cuts together for whatever I may need them for. I don't make binding sets. I have all of my 2.5" strips in one see-through drawer and if I'm making a scrappy binding, I'll look through it. I've never made a potato chip quilt, and I don't see myself making one, but if I wanted to, the correct sizes would be together. I don't like hand-sewing, so you probably won't find me slow-stitching anytime soon. And finally, I'm not much of a small project sort of gal, like mug rugs, etc. My organization method suits me perfectly for how I sew, and everyone can tailor theirs to whatever needs they have. As for yardage fabrics, they are folded around a comic board and standing horizontal on my shelves by amount so I can easily see what I have.
Love your organization, I have been cutting my fabric into usable sizes. I organize by colors, I have the room, but the fabric leftover from projects is definitely cut into usable sizes.
My fabrics I buy are put into colour plastic shoe size containers. I mark each container with the colours. I try to cut my scraps left over from projects into different sizes. Mostly 5”, 2 1/2 and 1 1/2. I do also cut 2 1/2; 2 and 1 1/2 strips. They all in their own container. I have a very large plastic blocks with scraps and I use them for scrappy blocks, or I can cut into particular sizes for Bonnie Hunter quilts
I buy mostly one yard increments. My storage is in shallow bins that when I take the lid off I can see everything in the bin. I just went through my stash and sorted by color and theme. I now know all my stash and only buy background fabric. One local shop keeps a $7 clearance room going. They pull the older fabric just to get it moving. They have a sale coming up with 30% off. I will be there to buy the rest of the bolt of 4 or more yards. I keep all that on bolts.
I’m moving my sewing space from the basement to a new addition room on the ground floor of our house. I have 5 large totes of fabric scraps in all colors and sizes. I love your idea of cutting into useful sizes. The only thing I’d do different is group them in drawers by color.
I dont use precuts and buy yardage instead . I cut my leftovers into 6 1/2" and 4 1/2" squares to make 4 patches and 9 patches finishing at 12 inches. I also cut strips 2 1/2" and have been using those for the great grandkids to quilt string blocks. Thanks for sharing
I just went through all my fabric totes, which were organized by color. I got tired of digging to see what I have. I cut anything less than a fat quarter down to 5" to 1.5", these all go into plastic shoe boxes.Any left over that was a good size for a strip quilt was put in a another tote. Fat quarters, or close to, all folded neatly in bins. For anything over a yard, I purchased the comic book boards and folded the fabric to fit the board and made little bolts and they all got put back in the original Totes, by color. Took me a little over a month to do. I feel less stressed with it organized. Most of my stash was given to me.
I've separated my 1.5" squares into lights/darks. Then I alternate them into rows of 4. I sew 4 rows of 4 together to make squares of 16, then I sew 4 squares of 16 together to make a 4-patch of 64 squares total. There is probably an easier way, but this way makes sense in my head. It's just a project I play with when I'm in-between bigger projects.
@revelationquilts I've seen some videos where they use fusible interfacing or iron on tricot. the squares are ironed on, and then the stitching is done. I'll have to try both methods, to see how my brain works. I like that you separate into light and dark.
@@annolsen8276 That sounds like way too much work. I like just sewing my little squares together. It's nice busy work when I don't have a bigger project to work on but I still want to sew. Eventually, I'll sew the bigger square together and have a big postage stamp quilt!
Thanks for asking. I am currently working on my next one. I traveled to MN for 2 weeks to visit my family. When I got home, I somehow contracted Covid, so now I'm recovering from that. I hope to get back to my sewing by the end of this week. The tutorial will be for the quilt you see behind me in this video!
Fantastic, thank you. Love your ideas for geometric designs especially. Something nice for masculine bed coverings! I might also cut 1.5” strips, I think. But I agree 1” is useful, eg for butted QAYG blocks with slashing to cover the join. I do wonder about the postage stamps, as a quilt like that would weigh a ton with all those seam allowances!
My yardage is on shelves by color but I cut mist of the other into squares. I have started cutting 2.5 inch strips because I started making potato chip blocks and I made a Villa Rosa pattern named Maze. Really enjoy all you have shared. Thank you.
This is something I definitely need to do. I'll need to take about a good month to be organized. I'm going to switch out color and do sizes. The colors seem to be too overwhelming . There are so many hues and shades it drives me nuts. Thank you and I love love love how your patterns have motions
I organize my scraps , the same way you do. Strips, and squares in their own cubbies by size not color. I love scrap quilts so this works fine for me also. Thank you for sharing.
You are a breathe of fresh air. I do my scraps like you but my squares under 41/2" I put in little baggies if there's alot of the same fabric or the same fabric collection. I always save my hst from snowballing corners and put those already squared up in the fabric collection from what I'm working on in baggies also. Only takes a few min to go ahead and square up. Smallest of these hst are 1 1/4 bc I do miniature quilts. Fun and ready to go when I'm between quilts. I use my bindings for enders or beginner sewing to save on thread. Amazing how much thread I save doing this. I never have to go back and cut threads anymore so I save alot of time and messiness. I put it to the test and I've never went back. I do try to organize anything loose into color. Love your postage stamp idea, mines in 1" and I'll sew these by 2's at the beginning and ending of quilt blocks with another project and before you know it I can build from there my mini postage stamp blocks. I don't always take the time to cut 1"squares but strip piecing makes it goes much faster if I've run out of my 1"squares. Just some ideas, hope these are helpful. it works for me
I do mine by size but cut more sizes then you do. I have 2”, 2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10” squares. Strips I do 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2, 5”. I cut up anything under a quarter yard. I store yardage by size and color. Half yards, one yards, two yards and then 3-5 yard pieces for backgrounds and/or backings. Thanks for the tips 👍
I like your scrap organizing ideas, but i must say i find if i can save a 5", 4.5", 4", 3.5", 3" strip from leftovers i do (sorted into ziplock bags), vs squares. I find i i like using larger strips for varigated borders and for widening backings. I figue i can always cut them into squares if needed for a project. I also save odd shaped triangles for the corners of my string blocks tgat start on a diagonal.
Definitely! You have to use whatever sizes & shapes work best for what you're doing. The key is in the actual organization and keeping everything neat & tidy. For me, that makes it all so much more enjoyable.
I bought a tee shirt. It is darling and high quality fabric. However, i ordered and need a 3X and it is like a sausage skin. I have both 2X and 3X I can wear in other brands, so it's not me. Just warning you. It's darling but I would need to be 1X to wear. 😢

I do the same system as well. Anything under 2 inches is scrappy quilt material. Thank you for sharing
Ma’am I am glad you are feeling better. Your health is very important, please take care of your self and stay safe.
So glad I found your channel. Really love you ideas, techniques, very well presented.Thank you so much for sharing👍👍

I think you've just sorted out my Mount Scrapmore for me. Sorting by colour isn't really working but by size/shape seems a much easier way Thank you.
Wonderful! Have Fun!
You could have a box for size, and coloured piles within the box
Thank you for your video. I must watch others to see how you use your scraps. I like your postage stamp block. Very colorful😀!
