  • The Role of Minorities in Founding Karachi | Karachi Mini-Documentary
Karachi, a sprawling metropolis on the southern coast of Pakistan, boasts a rich and diverse history shaped by many cultures and communities. Throughout history, the city has been a melting pot of ethnicities, languages, and religions, contributing to its unique character.
The role of minorities in Karachi's history has been significant, as they have played an integral role in shaping the city's economic, social, and cultural fabric. Hindu, Christian, Sikh, and other minority communities have coexisted alongside the majority Muslim population, contributing to the city's trade, education, and artistic endeavors. Before the partition of India in 1947, Karachi was home to a substantial Hindu population, which contributed immensely to the city's economy and cultural landscape.
However, the partition led to a mass migration of communities, altering Karachi's demographics. Despite challenges and tensions over the years, Karachi's minorities have persevered, contributing to its vibrant tapestry, from trade and industry to arts and academia. Their resilience underscores the city's pluralistic ethos and its commitment to inclusivity, making Karachi a testament to the harmonious coexistence of diverse communities.

My grandmother was from Karachi... There were a lot of Maharashtrian Hindus in Karachi. Pre partition days had good engineering colleges only in the twin cities of Karachi and Mumbai ! ... Ganesh Festival, Mahashivratri, Diwali and Dusshera was celebrated with great pomp in Karachi... Unbelievable but true !

There was a Restaurant and hotel established by a Sindhi Family of Karachi in 1892 by the name of "Sindh Islamia Hotel" in Old town near Bunder Road (Wood Street). Although owned by Muslims they never served any cow meat for more then hundred years. Their owners were Sindhis who lived with Hindu community since 1853 and always respected them even after 1947. The hotel was sold to another Muslim who broke the tradition in 1998 and started serving cow meat. This shows that the community that grew up with Hindu community had deep ties and respect for the one another.

Excellent! Thank you to Junaid Ji for this excellent documentary and for letting minorities speak for themselves. You are a class act! If Pakistan wants to be considered a modern metropolis, a force to be reckoned with and to have status on the world stage then it will have to tackle its own history. It will have to start telling the truth about its founding and founders and stop living in a fantasy world where we are ever the victims without ever acknowledging our role as an aggressor. It is shameful that we are easing the past contributions of minorities as well as attacking them in the present! It is a failure of political will, to tell the truth, that has put us where we are. We should be ashamed of every one of Pakistan's leaders as none have even tried to deal with the issue of minorities, equal rights are human rights. We will be nothing until we learn to treat people with respect and dignity regardless of race, religion or creed. We expect to have this when we live in the West so it is time to practice what we preach!

These include symbols like 'Om', which have been partially defaced by locals. Even in Shikarpur, where I live, there's a hospital named R.B.U.T Civil Hospital. Whole world teaches their children science, maths and builds their logical thinking but in Pakistan we ARE teaching our children science but also inculcating superstition through islamyaat subject and even worst our qualified people listen to stupid religious fanatics which you call ULEMA, this believe in superstition kills their innovation, curiosity and creativity. Then they can be easily manipulated. This is how simple it is. But now people are awakening due to social media and they know that real Islam was never a religion it was a government (DEEN with currency DEENAR).

Jinnah was lohana with surname thakkar whose grandfather converted

Kutchi and sindhi language are siblings
With culture , people have also lost their mother tongue , their own civilization roots.
Ancient scripts, languages, ancient wisdom and lot of things gets lost
Actually foreign invaders always colonized natives first by imposing foreign language.
While there is nothing wrong in learning new language but imposing Urdu and looking down upon everything else to justify creation of pakistan and associate everything with arab ,turk ,Mongols and outsiders too was suicidal as people do not own their own country.
The most problematic thing with indian sub continent region muslim is that they don't connect themselves with the country in which they reside or don't recognise their own motherland as there own .
Something which you don't own whole heartedly, you would not be able to serve your country or motherland selflessly either .
Parsis blend with people of subcontinent and don't associate themselves with Iran or Persia
But this problem is sadly with indian sub continent region muslims .
So there is constant identity crisis and mental conflict which is worsened due to two nation theory of partition based on religion.
You are not able to even own your local heros or ancestral history or civilization.
Even after so many years, yet people of continent want to look upon invaders and colonizers as their hero while civilizational history of this land itself is way ancient
There are so many multiethnic multilingual and multicultural diversity in pakistan. But you don't even care that religion is just one aspect of one's identity. There is so much to individuals personality, culture and tradition.

There is entire ecosystem which works in and around temples

You do realize, that a lot of people moved to Karachi after partition and no, they didn't steal the land, they had to live in refugee tents. Karachi's population and area increased at high rates due to not only, immigration from India but also from rural spaces. You should go and see how much the population demographics have changed, in terms of ethnicity even. That much should be common sense to you if you feel educated enough to comment. And yes I agree, minorities are treated like shit in Pakistan. However, to blame refugees who had to flee their homes as well is shameless of you. It's easier to blame the other side but violence an land grabbing happened on both sides. The partition happened because of the divide between Hindus and Muslims and not the other way around. My grandparents didn't work their arses off for you to pretend that they got free handouts. It was a devastating situation. They were literal pre-teens and teens. who had to see see entire families killed in front of them. But honestly, if you knew even a bit more about karachi, you would see that the city is not really looked after by the govt. Law is nota thing. I know of relatives who had their house stolen and they were Muslims and yes in their case it wasn't done by the govt. However, the govt keeps making shit policies, in general so i arent too surprised they pull this shit. Police also discriminate based on ethnicity not only religion. Us descendants of muhajir also face discrimination if the other person is Sindhi. You don't know shit but still come here to yap. Bring out facts when you try and help your brothers in faith. Atleast that helps in making a legit point

Thank you Junaid bhai for highlighting this aspect of karachi. Hope we would see better times ahead where people can feel secure as a Pakistani and not judged on the basis of ethnicity, race or religion. I hope that time will come.
