All the tribes in indonesia are indigenous to their regions, including the Austronesians (the "typical southeast asian" face) that populated most of the Indonesian islands. Papua is the farthest east province, and they're black (just like Phillipine negritos), but they never settled in the other islands. So, to say Papuans are the indigenous, "original" people of Indonesia isn't entirely true. They are the original people of the Indonesian province of Papua and of Papua New Guinea (which is its own country), and comprise hundreds of the thousands of indigenous tribes of the islands that now make up Indonesia.
but even though most of indonesia have the same ancestral roots, the fact that we were separated by islands made it so many of the tribes only communicated for trade, with no single shared language or culture. what we call "indonesia" now was literally thousands of different nations with no common identity, despite similar facial structure and genealogy. kind of like germans, italians, and french will tell you they're very different (but to someone who knows nothing about the ethnic differences, they all just look "white").
papua and new guinea alone have more than 800 languages, making that region the most linguistically diverse region in the world. even most tribes in papua don't share the same language and can't communicate with their local languages. and if you remember "Wonderland Indonesia," that's almost a dozen different languages and cultures there. as a person who was born and grew up in indonesia, i could only understand the parts in Bahasa Indonesia (the "common" language here). i couldn't understand ANY of the local language used here in The Spirit of Papua or ANY of the local languages in Wonderland Indonesia.
what the islands have in common is we were all colonized by the dutch. This is why the province of papua united with the other islands when Indonesia declared independence in 1945 (also why Timor Leste eventually left Indonesia -- they were colonized by the Portuguese, not the Dutch). none of the islands spoke the same language. and they literally had to make a new one, "Bahasa Indonesia", to unite the nation.
interestingly, Bahasa Indonesia is mostly just a written and oral language for formal use. in every day language, we all have our own dialects and twists on Bahasa, informed by our local cultures. the "Bahasa Indonesia" spoken in Papua is grammatically different from that spoken in Makassar, Sumatra, Bali, or Jawa. it's why foreigners who learn Bahasa Indonesia online have trouble understanding locals when they actually come here. Even people from Jakarta, for instance, have to learn to understand the local dialect of Bahasa Indonesia when they go to a different island. however, someone from east indonesia will better understand the local Bahasa Indonesia used in other east indonesian provinces. for example, i'm Bugis from the island of Sulawesi, which is central-eastern Indonesia, and our local dialect of Bahasa is structurally similar to the one used in Papua and Kalimantan (subject often follows the verb: "mau ke mana ko?" instead of "kamu mau ke mana?", or "going where are you?" instead of "you are going where?"), though they have their own slang and unique terminology that I wouldn't immediately understand.

You are right, I can also feel the spirit of ancestors by listening to the beats here. If we listen more to traditional music n songs, we will hear sort of similar beats and also chanting from different ethnic groups. Well of course there are also differences, some may be softer, some more intense n loud, but they all awaken n stir something deep within us. It's just wonderful how human actually share this same feeling through their culture, although we all live in different places. 🌺
