Papua is the easternmost region in Indonesia which holds a lot of wealth. Various names have been given to them by foreigners who carried out expeditions in this region. In fact, since 200 AD there have been several changes to the name of Papua.
It is said that Papua was once called ¨Nuu War¨ which means light from the east. This name then increasingly disappeared as more and more explorers came to the Land of Papua.
Based on past historical records, Papua's name has changed several times from 200 AD to the present. Such as Labadios, Tungki, Janggi, Dwi Panta or Samudranta, Wanin or Onin, Melanesia, Os Papuas or Ilha de Papo, Papua Isla de Oro or Island of Gold, to Papa-Ua (Papua).
Why is it called Papua? The Tidore Kingdom in Maluku, around 1646 AD, once controlled the Papua area and called its inhabitants Papa-Ua. Their name then changed to Papua, which means curly hair. This name is said to be used to this day. CMIIW 🙏😁
