Was thinking of trading my 2014 Am Std. Strat w/Custom shop Fat 50s for a Vintage II '61, for no reason than being influenced by all the RUclips influencers and Fender ads. But Baxter brought me back to sensibility, the 2014/2015's with those Fat 50s pickups, perfect for what I play.

When I finally realized that wanting is more fun than having, the burn of wanting began to subside, and then I realized how exhausting the whole process is for me; an OCD thing. Now I’m trying to figure out how to use all the gear I’ve accumulated!

Here’s the thing… if ya have a ton of stuff and there are a few things that don’t get played that you trade for something that will inspire new playing… it’s worth every bit. I recently sold an American Original Series Custom Telecaster and a shell pink player series strat on a Heritage 535 and I haven’t put it down. It’s incredibly versatile, extremely well made and feels and sounds great. Plus- it makes me approach the guitar in a completely different way.

I was checking out that Benson Reverb unit on their page yesterday. What a great Reverb tone, I wanted it so bad. But they wouldn't sell me one and I couldn't find one. Then by this morning I remembered I don't really care that much for reverb, and I would probably use it once or twice, TOPS! And there it would be sitting on top of an amp, mocking me.

When Jonathan said, “sometimes I upgrade… and I’m disappointed” that resonated with me.
I think in the gear head communities and gear-related RUclips channels there’s this expectation that you’re supposed to want to upgrade and if you don’t, you’re lying to yourself. If you have an Epiphone, you’re never going to be happy until you get a Gibson headstock. If you have a Les Paul Tribute, you’re not going to be happy until you get a Les Paul with binding. Same with the Squier to Fender MIM to Fender USA to Fender Custom Shop pipeline.
Instead of always focusing on what’s better, it’s more gratifying to focus on finding what’s best for /you./
My number 1 guitar is Korean made. All of the gear channels and boards would have me think I won’t truly be happy and reach self-actualization until I get a USA model or a custom shop.
But… there’s no “higher end” version of the BMG Arielle, and I don’t know of any Custom Shops that can build something with the specs I’ve grown to love.
Like Baxter said, “why do we hate the guitars we love?” - there’s always one thing you would do differently. If I could, I would love to try a satin neck, but my guitar has a thick gloss finish. There’s always something you would change because human nature is to always seek the “better” thing.

Is $800 to much as an upgrade? I shouldn't say upgrade cause I only own 2 actual electric guitars a L P studio and a deluxe plus Strat, both 90's models. I upgraded a lot of parts on my studio through the yrs. And when I did these upgrades I made deals with the seller getting things cheaper by buying more at once. I spend over a grand building my pedalboard. And even got a few extra pedals cause wanted to try them. My problem is I don't sell anything. Got my board and about 40 extra pedals. Got 5 guitars electrics, acoustics and a bass. Got about 14 amps, 2 keyboards, P A. All this was free or so cheap I couldn't pass it up. But G A S is done. I look but don't feel no need to get anything else until I REALLY need it.

I am pretty invested in the Helix ecosystem and wanted to stay in that realm, but also missed using my other pedals! I use the Helix for several applications; worship, electric shows (normally use acoustic), bass gigs. Save me a ton of room, and money. We all get gas. I don't have GAS any more. It took 40 years, but I just don't care that much about gear any more. I don't actually have that much stuff either. I'm more worried about playing well and putting on a good show (at the local dive bar). I'll pretty much play anything/everything as long it's not total crap.

I want an old purple Marshall ! I want a Tweed deluxe ! I want a les paul custom ! I could have bought all those things if i didn't buy all the other gear i bought to satisfy those gear lusts 😂

I have my guitar collection (8) exactly where i want it. I don't see myself buying anymore guitars and i certainly will not sell anything i have. My small pedal board (5) does the job and i only see myself buying 1 more pedal. I am at peace ✌️ 😅😅

You have to watch out for gear lust. It starts out with desiring the more reasonably priced stuff, the stuff that's barely within your reach. After awhile, you find yourself lusting after the good stuff, the stuff you know you can't afford. You eventually find a way to obtain your first uber-high-end guitar, or other piece of equipment, and then... Bam!... you're hooked! I'd rather not get into what happens after that. Let's just say it's a place you don't ever want to find yourself going to (unless you have money coming out of every orifice on your body). 😄

What you guys don’t acknowledge is that we can quit ANY TIME WE WANT,* which we don’t appreciate.

Most of the You Tube guitar and equipment channels thrive on gear lust. Would it be profitable to start a gear lust therapy group? The theme song would be "What Do You Want From Life?" by The Tubes. (Fee Waybill rules)
