12 years ago I was set free after 33 years. The first thing I did was buy my telecaster, I had a Crate tube amp from the mid 90s. Next was a Marshall with a 2x12 and a Strat. Set up my HI-Fi and big screen TV all in my living room . I would have never been allowed to do that when I was married. I’m 70 and retired and life is good. 😎 quick edit I should say I was not unhappy being married but when it ended music and playing music helped me get through the adjustment of not being with the person I had lived with for 33 years and had 2 great sons with but shit happens.
@caseylee12 my wife got me a Les Paul. We are building a house. The floorplan is a two bedroom, my Tiff decided we should sleep in the second bedroom and use the master bedroom as the studio.
I actually have more guitars than my husband and we both enable each other to buy more. I buy one, then he buys one…. and they keep getting more expensive! The couple that buys guitars together goes broke together!
I'm 63 and I've been adding to my collection. I have 21 guitars/basses/baritones. I have a few pedals, but I'm really not a pedal gal. I figure when I croak, my s/o can sell them to pay my post-life expenses. I was born in Kentucky.
I recently sold off everything except for a Strat and a Fender Vibro Champ to pay for a motorcycle (Limited Edition Ducati Monster 1200 #251/500), my wife tried to convince me to keep it all and still buy the bike she is one of the good ones 🤘😎🎸🏍
I was up to 23, went down to 9 and have settled in at 16 right now. I have 8 amps and 56 pedals. I love them all and use them as I see fit- all have a different place and tone. This was a SLOW process, so it never broke the bank and went from new to used to vintage! Makes me happy knowing I can play until I’m 80 (hopefully)!
Stop buying. Find some old gear you already own and appreciate it. Don't sell it. Don't trade it. Just crank it. In my experience there is usually nothing wrong with any piece of gear that more volume won't fix.
Collection statues doesn’t change, but your living space does! My whole house is a rehearsal space now! Sweet tube amps and guitars everywhere. I always live within a one income budget so if a partner leaves I’m good to go. Just remember the Larger the collection the larger the maintenance cost.
I’m a novice player, but a professional collector. I have 23 guitars, 3 projects, 8 amplifiers. Only 5 pedals, I’m not good enough to explore that area. Yet. I really should reduce my collection. There’s a couple turkeys that I never touch.
Everything that was relegated to under the stairs came out, my 4 guitars, my 2x10 amp and the stereo gear expansion began! 6 years and counting! Most nights, I turn the game on, mute it, and turn on the stereo, either my 12000+ mp3s on the digital media server, or just FM radio, and jam along... my kids are now in guitar and drum lessons, my oldest is collecting CDs at a mad rate, spending pretty much all her allowance on music, there's always a radio on somewhere in the house....something never allowed before....red pill up boys! life is good!
Finding the guitars that you 'want' only to find some of them are not what you expect is enlightening. Wanted a ES335 forever, finally got one, 2014 Cherry Dot. Beautiful instrument, great tone and playability. What is interesting is that I tend to gravitate more to my P90 instruments. Maybe I should find a 335 with P90s and trade for it. I have my dream acoustic, a Martin D35 and it is absolutely fantastic. I tend to play my OMC16e or my '63 Epiphone Cabellero more, I think because they are more compact. I had a really nice 2000 American Pro Strat in Natural Ash. I never bonded with it, I like a Kramer partscaster I have better, so it went on its way too. If wife bailed I likely would not do anything different. With 18 hooks on the wall all I have to do is keep things in motion....... BUT it does help to be seen taking something away before bringing something into the music room ....last time I left with a bulky amp and came home with a much smaller gig bag.....It always seems to be appreciated when I (appear to) reduce the net volume of gear. Somehow that equates to dollars in some folks minds. But WE know what a gig bag can hold......
I am more placing Guitars I built with those that Deserve Them, Fitting the Jewels of Amps and Gear to each Artist, most times taking loss to make Sure Right Person Gets Right Guitar or Amp, and I don't have to Sell even One for Money, it's more for Room and Space and Sanity knowing there's an Artist to Fit each Instrument I create or Build
I've been single for years, but I've been raising a kid on my own, so I'm still broke. When I get her finally set up on her own and out of the house, I still probably won't go hog wild, but I think I'm due for a really nice Gretsch and Amp.
Life-long acoustic player here, pushin' 65. I front-ended the good times at 18, blowing out my grandpa's inheritance on a car, a French-made bicycle and of course, two expansive guitars that were above my pay grade. With age comes family and priorities, so I adjusted. I go into a shop as The Guitar Rescuer(!), taking in the orphans of luthiery, I now have four paltry yet playable instruments that otherwise would have met a fiery or crushing end.
Been Reducing for some time, like right up until saw the Slash Goldtop on Sale and was able to Put it on Layaway, so now reducing still but replacing Lesser Guitars with Better ones LOL, on a Side note to Wives, Wife & I have agreement, if it's Bought on Layaway I am NOT allowed to pay it Out Early to Encourage Me to wait next time until have the Money, maybe
I resent Fender builders calling themselves masters... They're builders, that's it, absolutely nobody is putting any of them on a level with Antonio Stradivari or Henry O. Studley.
Yeah an amazing lady. She's even helped me $$$$ buy some great guitars. Most notably an Eric Clapton autogph 000-28. Then she expects me to use it to create income. If that doesn't happen shortly after purchase she'll ask, 'how long you gonna hang on to that thing. You should sell it if you're not giging with it'. Good one here. I like the conversation. It's real. Thanks guys
I needed money to do some major repairs on the house...unfortunately that meant the 67 Telecaster and Vox Viscount left because they were the easiest to sell and most valuable gear that I had.
You're not alone. I also have major house repairs and I am also selling gear. As they say, easy come, easy go. I've sold a lot of gear over the years to pay bills. I feel your pain.
I found that girl and we have been together 44 years. She told me along time ago to get what you want but don't be stupid and let me write a hot check or not be able to pay the bills because you have G A S. I own 6 Combo amps none worth less than 2500. 15 guitars 5 worth more than 5000 and she has stuck to her agreement and me too! Only problem is I love her and she doesn't know how many I have sold over the years to buy Christmas and birthdays. NEVER SALE a guitar you Love! That's my MOTTO!
Ordering an Ampeg SVT Classic Head and Ampeg 6x10 cab. Ordered before she gets to the top of the street. Probably throw in another Fender Precision Pro II Bass as well. LOL
Breakfast in bed...but you gotta cook it yourself. Eggs just right. Toast toasted. Milk cold. Fruit ripe. Cinnamon roll warm soft and with a sweetness that you've been looking for. Guitar waiting patiently in the other room. 😊
20 years ago, I had one prized Ibanez Musician through neck guitar. My "ex" decided to throw it across the room at me. I picked up the guitar, amazingly only minor scratches and gouges, and proceeded to bludgeon her to death with it. I then had to face the problem of disposing of the body of course. It took me a while to cut up all the parts so I could - over a period of evenings - drive out and bury the packages in different woods surrounding the city. Cleaning the house was not too bad as we - ah, I mean now "I" - had laminate flooring so used cleaning alcohol and bleach to clean the floor and walls. Had to burn all my clothing in the yards, then took all her stuff to various charity and goodwill stores making sure to go to different ones every time and in different towns. She is now "officially happy living in a different country with some guy called Jose" and I am happy with my surviving guitar plus all the others I have bought since. Sure I committed manslaughter, obstruction of justice in disposing of the body and countless other felonies, but hey... you don't mess with my guitar. Not sure about statute of limitations and all that but, ya know sometimes the old red mist comes down and ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I am of course joking. I would never leave my guitar anywhere someone could maliciously get their hands on it, but if they did.... 💀💀💀 PS: The bit about her throwing the guitar at me was actually true. The rest was merely what went through my mind in about 2 seconds after she did it, and then we eventually made up. Broke up two years later though but hey ho, I was going on tour as a roadie anyway so all was cool :)
68 single and loving it. I do whatever i want. I have 8 guitars and they are the best collection I ever put together. I had 17 once upon a time when i was gigging and recording. I am looking to sell one because i don't need 4 strats but all the offers i am getting are ridiculous low ball attempts.😮
i doubt that will ever happen to me. I usually make a remark about something before the relationship starts which makes them not want to talk to me anymore.. Its okay since i enjoy being all by myself most of the time. If by any weird chance of events i do end up in a relationship that is about to end and she would sell my stuff or destroy it, she can expect all of her stuff to be burning out on the street the same day. that being said ive been single for years now and im content with it. noone to argue with when i spend a lot of money on something or if i feel like using the dinner table as a workbench.
I'm going PRS or Murphy Lab guitar, proper Marshal JTM45, and just going ham on all the pedals. Ask me again in 10 minutes and I will choose different gear.
Still have a collection that's way to large, but it reduced from many mid tier guitars to less quantity but all higher end instruments. At one point it was around 35, now I'm down to about 12 or so. Those all consist of US made Fenders and Custom Shops, to Gibson's and PRS. I have one remaining 335 copy that I'm looking to replace with Gibson, but that's my last remaining "mid tier" because it's damn good.
@@whiskybravo4648 I don't disagree at all with this. If I'm heading out to jam with friends etc, I will bring a relic with that I don't worry about getting a scratch or nick on. I don't gig, and probably won't as life has other priorities for me. That's kind of why I "traded up". I'm pretty much at home just enjoying my collection these days.
Interesting question. Something similar happened to me. My wife passed away recently, With Easter coming up soon I bought a Gretsch 5422-12 (hollow body) for home so I could take my older Gretsch 5422-12 (hollow body) to leave at church. Then when I had an injury that made playing my Epiphone Dot too difficult to play (temporarily) I purchased a Gretsch 5422tdg? (6 string hollow body) in case I would need it in the future as I get older. Seems my Gretsch 62 model 6122 is getting less play time recently due to its weight.
I buy around what I do with music. So I believe in making practice and playing at home as dynamic as possible so I have some great playing instruments both acoustic and electric, with some solid amps and pedals. I also invested in some good standard pedals. The big leap for me was doing some recording of what I am playing - I found the hardware and software expense for that is reasonable. I don't get to play out much at all but could with the instruments and pedals I have. Would likely need to add some larger amps and pa stuff - but that's not what I do. I like having some good basic guitars for playing around the campfire, then I have some strong mid-range players instruments which play well and I can take them somewhere and not worry if they'll get stolen. I do have some nicer premium that are really for me - they play and sound excellent. I mainly research what I get and make sure it has a reason to be in my collection. I don't sell much but have sold a few of my lower-end gear to friends that play.
I have 3 acoustics I will never sell.I would probably start selling handguns before my gear, how many do I need? Several were opportunistic because a friend needed money anyway.
Reading some of these comments make me want to purge a lot of stuff. I have so much yet always seem to grab the same guitar and put it through the same amp. Ironically enough, my favorite amp is still the one I’ve had since I was 17 years old.
I have 27 guitars and basses in my bedroom and a little amp wall (Ampeg V4B, Fender Tweed, Fender Black Panel, Marshall Studio Vintage, Vox AC15, Ampete switcher 2 x IsoCabs). Divorced twice and never been happier! 😂 Edit: but I am selling my old cheaper guitars or guitars that didn’t click with me - and my vintage amp half stacks. No room for all of that stuff.
and it has a P94 pickup at the neck (P90 in a humbucker footprint) - very cool. can't tell from the glare what the bridge pickup is... nice looking guitar.
If my wife left me, play time would be over so I would have to sell stuff. I would probably start with the amps and guitars I play the least and get to a point where I would have the 1 or 2 that you would have to pry out of my cold dead hands. Same with pedals. But if we were Peter Panning it? Studio space, the best interface I could get with top quality mics, a small drum kit and of COURSE a Two Rock!!!
5 minutes in you said it - a studio. I live in a duplex so can’t rock out or spread out. I dream of having a “band in a box” space with a drum kit, proper bass amp, the guitars, the keyboard, recording stuff , …
The good thing about building a hefty collection of partscasters and cheaper, modded, guitars is they can't be easily sold and certainly not at a profit.
I bought all of my gear after I was no longer married, and our divorce was a mutual thing that cost me $417 that I didn't mind paying. We had no joint property or loans. I went from one old guitar to 21 guitars and 17 amps. I only bought low to mid tier guitars and mostly low powered amps. The ex and my boys will get my gear after I die and I'll leave instructions for its sale. I'd kind of like to reduce the collection before that, though, to the items that have increased in value and would be an easier sale.
If you have the funds, buy an additional house in order to function as your practice area. Then go out and buy an unlimited amount of guitars. Fill your new home up with guitars and joy. Disclaimer: This is not advice. Is comment is for educational and entertainment purposes only. 😂
I'd actually sell my tele first since it's pretty easy to find another tele. It's harder to replace my Jazzmaster though since it's generally harder to find offsets in stock or 2nd hand. I'm also super picky with the burst on a rosewood sunburst strat.
My wife is flying out today, no not on a broom, and I slipped two disks in my back Saturday morning. I’m not about to pa ruse my local guitar shop while sporting a pooshy. 😂 I think I’m gonna jump online and buy a T shirt from you guys today just to say I bought something. Would all of you guys sign it for me? Sincerely, In Pain.
I'm almost 42, single, and I wouldn't ever consider dating, let alone getting married to someone who was in any way threatened by my gear. And at this point, even if I did end up getting married, I'd be coming in with my collection, so I'd make sure nobody touches it if the thing goes south.
Reminds me of the King of The Hill episode where they all plan and prepare their "last meals" like in prison but they were all too superstitious to eat it.
In today's hypothetical situation, it looks like I'll finally be getting that 335 or Starfire, at least for a little while. Thanks, honey! But under my own new rules I have to get rid of one now. (Guitar, not wife.) The 'collection' will eventually shrink to just a few. Don't need a collection if I'm broke and sleeping on a buddy's sofa.
I legit had my reverb cart stacked up with like 25 items of shit I wanted that added up to like $10,000. The sellers started haggling with me dropping their prices to get me to buy... And I'm like dude... I can't even spare $100 right now. Let alone $350 for one pedal.
buy quality guitars used at a low price...then say they are investments, hedges against inflation. My Rivolta Mondata baritone finally arrived yesterday...B-stock, amazing player. Up to 20 now....lefties.... Love having my own GC of lefties...
LOL-I got my own Home Studio, even though my wife is still hanging around. Of course, the fact that she IS here means the studio remains relegated to one end of the laundry room.
I'm single. Marked safe from having this issue. Next woman I get with,my house my gear, she don't like it, there's the door. After my last breakup I did get me my first Magnatone like a month later. I thought, well damn this breakup ain't so bad now lol. Even single I can't afford an R9 but I'm gonna sell some things to get one
I went from 1 guitar, 1 amp and a tuner pedal, to ummmmm many guitars, a few amps (biggest/loudest is the ac30) and shelves of pedals............just sayin.
Baxter, I found a red knob FenderTwin. I bet I can get my guy to hold it for you. But, I need you to convince my parents that the best possible sound for their church is two Fender Bassman.
I recently had to start selling stuff. My wife took $ from the retirement and we got nailed for it in taxes. So to pay it off and get it out of my hair I sold all the amps except for my Spark (I need something). Probably 10 guitars and a few pedals. Kept my 2 Gibsons and my American Strat. The others were not as expensive but it still sucked. But it's out of my hair and I can start plains for what's on the shopping list because it's going to be FN pricey. Boutique amps for sure and a custom build or 2 😂.
Okay, I've been married twice. First there was the 2 sisters. Then there was #3 worse than both sisters together. SMFH. Now that I'm 100% Free & knowingly never going back. It's NGD or NAD or NPD every day. Just Saying 😎 And he lived happily ever after for the rest of his life. The End. P.S. Everything is Paid For, And I retire in 4yrs. Beautiful
“Allowed”…. Yuck. The thought of that disgusts me.
This is why I’m 42, never married, with a killer gear collection lmao
Aw, man... My wife found my Fender Pro (1) telecaster online for me, then let me drive 2 1/2 hrs away to get it..... I have such a good wife!

Get a early prs like your name! The 92 project!
Here’s what happens: I own 7 guitars and I know 5 chords. No songs. That’s what happens.
My wife loves a good guitar safari 😏👌🎸 She even bought me a Customshop Strat for my 50th 🎸She’s a keeper for sure 👌🎸🤟
I have added 4 more that I have built the last couple of months. Addicted. 😂
Before I had to sell any gear, I'd skip town and change my name to Maxter.
I wonder how many people got rid of their Centaurs back in the day because they didn't think it was anything special?
2 years ago I went from 24 to 11 geets, only kept my keepers/can't live without instruments. It was very liberating!

Great topic guys! I've gone from 35 to 25 to 15 guitars. Circumstances and life's priorities change throughout our lives. Never less than 5 though!

My latest keeper is a Brad Paisley Silver Sparkle and latest wife is a keeper too!
5-ish high quality guitars are perfect for me.
A Nashville telecaster Will get you very close to a perfect guitar.
My wife is sweet as honey and I love her sooo much! I sure hope she reads this so l can buy another guitar I need like a hole in the head.

I'm getting a smaller house. And an Emerald Kestrel. Which is my current plan, except for the smaller house.
New Stratocaster, the Vintage 2 61 strat in white and a EL34 based Amp with a 2x12 cab. Or as J said a Masterbuild.
What a wonderful intro!!!

How much is that custom telecaster with the binding behind Baxters head? No joke..

As a Canadian, I really appreciate the trailer park boys clip.
If I may, it’s always good to have one mid tier guitar to bring with you to jams or gigs. You’ll not worry about it as much as your high end guitars.
I have been reducing number but upping quality and value
That was an awesome Clint movie
Sold my voxac30 on Tuesday and Wednesday ordered a new Carr impala amp … give and take I say
I have 3 acoustics I will never sell.I would probably start selling handguns before my gear, how many do I need? Several were opportunistic because a friend needed money anyway.
Sunday hmm??? Id turn the house into a fireplace 😂 she come home with me roasting marshmallows attached to the tuner knob of my guitar 😂🎉
Chase Bliss Pedals for Everyone
So there’s a Southern Pines in North Carolina. But ! Is there a Northern Pines in South Carolina ? The answer is Yes
Edit: but I am selling my old cheaper guitars or guitars that didn’t click with me - and my vintage amp half stacks. No room for all of that stuff.
After I got divorced I made the decision to sell all my gear. The "band" that I told her I was in was fake the whole time so I have no use for it now.
HYSTERICAL !!!
i wish i had that significant other who thought that way/ im lucky to get my gear without trouble. man this sucks.
Gotta be sneaky...I buy most of my stuff from Guitar Center now and pick it up instore so I can sneak it in instead of it showing up at my door
The Echo park tele behind Johny & a nice two rock , not crazy maybe a ten watt???
What in the world happened to the F hole on that tortoise guarded thinline behind ya's?
and it has a P94 pickup at the neck (P90 in a humbucker footprint) - very cool. can't tell from the glare what the bridge pickup is... nice looking guitar.
I’d be too sad to buy. But … before it happens, I want to order a Masterbuilt all-rosewood Jazzmaster. 😉
5 minutes in you said it - a studio. I live in a duplex so can’t rock out or spread out. I dream of having a “band in a box” space with a drum kit, proper bass amp, the guitars, the keyboard, recording stuff , …
Good lord this got the hopes up
The good thing about building a hefty collection of partscasters and cheaper, modded, guitars is they can't be easily sold and certainly not at a profit.
Two Rocks are like KY women... Expensive and CRAZY LOUD!!!
If you have the funds, buy an additional house in order to function as your practice area. Then go out and buy an unlimited amount of guitars. Fill your new home up with guitars and joy.

Custom Brazilian Addy topped Huss and Dalton dred.
I go buy my first Gibson Les Paul standard, plus top!😂
MAX-ster! That one’s gonna stick!
😂 I think I’m gonna jump online and buy a T shirt from you guys today just to
say I bought something. Would all of you guys sign it for me?
Sincerely,
In Pain.
Re: “Kentucky women…” Nice, save Baxter!
Sunday morning I’m buying a one way ticket to Thailand and I ain’t never coming back.
I'm almost 42, single, and I wouldn't ever consider dating, let alone getting married to someone who was in any way threatened by my gear. And at this point, even if I did end up getting married, I'd be coming in with my collection, so I'd make sure nobody touches it if the thing goes south.
Ok. You've convinced me. I'm filing for divorce. 🤣
I haven't got too many guitars it's just that my house is too small😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
The “what do you buy if your wife left” buying list sounds like “I just won the lottery” buying list. 😂😂
Best intro ever lol.
My significant other is my gear. More like a harem ✌️❤️🎸
Luckily, I have a great significant other and gear, which she encourages me to buy...btw, I'm the breadwinner.
He Lived Happily Ever After For The Rest Of His Days!!!!
Cork sniffer Koa Taylor goes first…too nice to play in the first place.
