How much money can I make trading? What's a good percentage target to aim for as a trader? What are some realistic profit targets for a successful trader? What is considered a good ROI percentage? What's the average percentage a trader makes monthly? Should you stick to the 1% or 2% risk rule? I understand that are extremes out there; there are people who have turned very small pots of money into much bigger sums and there are also people with big capital who aren't really making much from it. Trading is using capital as a tool; I'm not a biggest fan of looking at things in percentage returns. If you're actively trading you want to be compensated well for what you're doing. OK.
    Let's assume you have a GBP100,000 account. We are risking 2% (GBP2,000) and if successful we're going to make GBP6,000 (3:1, Risk:Reward)
Let's also assume we have a 50% chance of success.

While 100% Returns per trade are unrealistic, 100% return per year a f.e. are Pretty common. There are Traders who started in beginning of the year with 5000$ and ended the year with 15k wich is even more than 100%. Don't let yourself get fooled by percentages guys! I agree that those numbers are not the average or easy but it's not impossible.
If you can grow your trading account safely and steady with 10% per year you can feel already skilled and for most traders it's better to go for the lower numbers. Stay safe ya'll

10 percent a month is very reasonable if you are a skilled day trader, or even a swing trader. Otherwise, how would they make a living at it? It might be hard for someone say, doing it as a hobby. Or hard for those individuals that are long term investing.

This does not seem very realistic, because your calculation only works if every "winner" reaches the original target, but if you apply trailing stops, there might also be winners that are stopped out with a profit long before the target is reached, hence the real reward/risk ratio may differ a lot from the intended ratio. On the other hand: if you don't apply stop loss trailing (which can be perfectly fine, depending on the strategy), I strongly doubt that the combination of a 3:1 reward/risk ratio AND a 50% winning percentage is anywhere close to realistic. You can have a high winning percentage or a high target, but not both. If the winning and losing probability are the same (=50% win rate in your example) 3:1 RRR is just another way of saying that the profit factor is 3.0. Such a system does not exists. It's not difficult to sometimes find real world profit factors >2 within lucky streaks over a period of less than 100 trades, but I'd like to see the strategy that achieves such results on average over several hundred trades. This seems far too optimistic; just my personal opinion. Thanks for the video!

I also think 3:1 is very hard to reach day trading. You need to be in a trending market with a volatile asset always. These days I am doing a little simulation, and have arrived to the conclusion that 1.2:1 target with 55% accuracy will make around 20% in 100 trades with 2x leverage.

I think in the video, the presenter thinks a lot about the question. All returns are different. But the point here is to know the minimum and maximum average values that can be expected in a year, for example. In the example he shares in the video, he mentions a starting capital of 100,000 USD and an annual profit margin of 120%. Well, let me tell everybody that with a yearly return of half, that is, 60%, anybody can reach a million dollars in just 4 years, of course, without touching the balance of the trading account for 4 years and meanwhile having an alternative income to live on. So the community needs a perspective on the potential of trading. Even if somebody starts with 500 USD and has a 60% annual return, they reach a million dollars in 13 years. If that person starts trading at 40, at 53, they are already a millionaire. Let's see, perspective is missing. I hope my comment helps the community. Greetings.

To regularly find trades giving R:R of greater than even 1.5 is hard. To expect a 100% return is fantasy for most traders. 20 - 30% is considered respectable. 2% stake means a run of losses will significantly damage your account and your psychology.

    • @ukspreadbetting

Depends what you're trading. If forex pairs its mostly unlimited. With blue chip stocks you can buy millions without too much impact. With smaller caps and mid-caps your dealing will have an impact on the shorter-term movements. You just have to look at the average traded per day to see how liquid a stock is and how much of an impact your trading will likely have (in the shorter-term...).
