The atrocities of war are no match for the indomitable spirit of Man, in the hopelessness of misfortune sometimes the spark of hope and courage can light even the darkest of paths.
This has been a tremendous experience, the full gamet of emotions was drawn out, tragic, poetic, chivalrous and sincerely acted by all. Bravo, bravo to all concerned.

@@glensmillie5101 Oops, I accidentally deleted my initial response to your comment...
The utter waste of life! I am a mother of a grown-up daughter. I can still remember what it felt like carrying her, feeling her move - stretching and kicking my bladder, etc. To carry, raise and love one's child only for its life to be sluttered, gassed, stabbed or burnt then left as worm food.
      Tragic.
I understand why war is sometimes necessary but the sorrow of it all turns my stomach.
The fact that this guy's editing is truly skillfully in knitting the logic and flow that one's ability to suspended belief, draws one in and put one right there, a mid the blood, guts and gore.

I was around 12 when this show aired in '92. Marked me for life. Some of these moments stuck with me until today. As a result I love history, in particular the turn of the century, before and after, and absolutely despise war. As for this version, i didnt realize this was reedited. Fantastic job!

Isn't war so crazy. It's so pointless and only the old and in charge profit from the dead. I too love history. Especially the 19th and 20th century. WW1 and WW2 are fascinating. Such huge leaps for technology.

Lest we forget. This series I did watch in my teens and ever wanted to go and visit and pay respect at Verdun battlefields. I did so in 2007 and 2016.
So thank you people who did develop this show.
And thank you for this episode - i watched today and am remembering two of my direct english relatives, who fought and died at the Somme in July 1916.
    May all rest in peace.
And still - I do hope for the world to learn of our failures and not always repeating these kind of cruel wars.

Excellently researched and the portrayal of combat regarding "trench warfare"(notwithstanding "the sound of the German machine gun" and that they seldom left a "serviceable" crew served automatic weapon behind even in retreat), makes this film a "gem" to watch. Kudos to one and all who made this possible.

Sean Pertwee played Alfred the butler, i think, among others, in TV's Gotham City, Julian Firth, one of the Firths forever popping up in British costume dramas, and, of course, Edward Petherbridge, Lord Peter Wimsey in a number of adaptations, and the original Murdoch of Murdoch Mysteries.

Hollywood never wastes a good script, they just reuse them. I remember watching the original(?) "3:10 To Yuma" movie days before I saw the newer version starring Russel Crowe and the dialogue was word for word identical, as best as I could tell without the script. In this movie, the scene at 36:39. is a rewrite from the movie The Great Escape when prisoner Steve McQueen tossed his baseball close to the wire and used the same excuse as was used in this movie. As a matter of fact I think this is that remake, with minor changes.
I guess Hollywood thinks we are too stupid to notice or were addicted to mindless entertainment.

Zero motivating factor. No McGuffin. And perhaps worst of all we have zero empathy with our characters because frankly we have no idea who they are, what they want or what they are prepared to do to obtain it. There were a few frightening setups when the Germans were releasing the gas and attacking with flame throwers but other than that it is hard to digest that this turkey is Lucasfilm. Just 5 years after release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
As an important side note: young Indy’s ages don’t work either. He’s either too young in the third installment of the film franchise (the River Phoenix intro) or he’s too old in this POS or he’s way too old in 1936 when Raiders takes place 😏

"Kids that never lived a hard time should not get involved in movies about old times."
As opposed to you whom survived hard time or are old enough to have lived in these old times?
Like, chill the fuck out, this is a Indiana Jones TV show from like the 80 or 90's, not a historical documentary. And all thing considered this is a far better portrayal of WW1 than most fiction on the subject.
