  • This has to be the most soulful version of My Funny Valentine ever, a perfectly crafted solo by John Park, former lead alto w/Stan Kenton. Note the breathtaking, emotional climax at 3:55, enough to make anyone cry! From the out-of-print "If Winter Comes" LP (apart from his work with Stan Kenton, this was the only album ever released of John's work). Listening to this will either motivate fellow sax players to really woodshed, or throw in the towel! Sadly, John passed away only months before he was to make an album with Stan Getz. Recorded 3/16/75 at Kansas City jazz fest. George Salisbury, piano. Leon Brady, drums; Milt Abel, bass. Read more about John Park here: www.kcjazzambassadors.com/issues/2004-10/johnpark.html
