Favorite parts of Mirai: . . . . . . . . 1) Them working together to put the doll away 2) The great-grandfather, just everything to do with him 3) Future Kun having no patience for his younger self, whatsoever
Unless you’ve watched a child’s disappointment that the new baby is utterly useless, you can’t imagine how sad that is. This was one of the delightful and sad moments in this movie. He wants to like this addition to the family and sees her as a playmate. But is told that he cannot treat this squalling bundle of poop as a friend but this is another porcelain decoration he is not allowed to touch.
I haven't watched the video yet and believe me I will do this right away after typing this. But thanks for reviewing films that don't get all the recognition they deserve so I can be open to more films I haven't gotten the chance to watch. Honestly I appreciate it and as such I will watch this video hopefully to find another amazing film to watch in the future ^w^
I decided to watch this movie tonight after seeing your review and even tho I have a half hour left of this absolutely beautiful masterpiece, I just had to come back and comment simply to say thank you, thank you for continuing to enlighten my blissfully ignorant ass about such incredible works of art! Huzzah to you my good man! Ps. Maquia and Wolfchildren were both incredibly amazing movies that I picked up on through your channel, and i'm eternally grateful for having watched them thanks to you! Much love and respect from Sweden!
I watched your review on Maquia when it came out, and I ended up loving that movie. After seeing this review, I think I am going to love this movie too. I’ll definitely watch it if I get the chance.
Your references to mamorus' other work is interesting. When I watched the trailer, I got the impression it was going to be some kind of large crossover film. From what you pointed out. In a roundabout way it was.
This really has nothing to do with the content of your videos, so I never commented on it, but I just wanted to say how happy the "Ladies, Gentlemen and others" makes me every time. Few RUclipsrs with similar intros include "others", or they just use it as an intro gag, but you saying that feels so welcoming every time. (Though I'm not sure if it started out as a joke, but it doesn't matter) Thank you, seriously, I appriciate that so much. ❤️ OKAY now on to watching the video, I can't wait any longer :D
I think we are naturally drawn to the older Mirai because a teenage character has more room for personality than a four year old, but that's not what the film is about. This is a story that explores the world through the purity of a child, and all the other interesting characters are a dressing to the main focus. To that end, I think the amount of screen time Mirai for was nicely controlled, even though I'd like to see more of her as well.
I haven't watched Summer Wars (or Mirai yet), but I agree that Boy and the Beast is awesome. And personally, I actually didn't like Wolf Children much at all; it was boring and had an unsatisfying ending. The Girl Who Lept Through Time, though, is absolutely fantastic; best one of Hosoda's films I've seen by a long shot. Hopefully I'll think the same of Mirai, but I'm a sucker for a good love story...
I saw the film at the Annecy Animation festival last year, its simply fenomenal, Impresive direction and animation. The only part I didn´t like was the third act, that went on for a bit too long I think. I was unlucky enough to be about three positions just before they closed the line for Mamoru Hosoda Signing. At least I got to see him up close.
I agree, the Boy and the Beast is my favorite of his work. The last part of the movie wasn't my favorite but the first 2/3rds makes up for it in spades. I absolutely love the message of love between a step parent and the child since I have a step father that loves me like his own. Boy and the Beast resonates with me because of that.
@@michaelmiky11 I call him my dad. If anyone asks about my dad it's my step dad that I see. I do see my biological dad but I don't have that connection with him as I do with my step dad. My step dad raised me since I was 7 and now I'm 25

A mixed of Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leap Through Time, Summer Wars, and The Boy and The Beast...pretty much all of the director’s previous works! XD

I'm a little sad funi isnt distributing mirai's home release only due to fact that when I get it, it wont match up with the rest of my hosoda collection dvds. For the love of God, yes! It is the best anime movie of 2018 without a doubt, and I am so disappointed it nowhere gets mentioned. Even Crunchyroll left it behind giving the award for some BS Boku No Hero Academia movie! And it is WAY better than Mirai in every aspect! I hope Maquia lives up to it though in quality...
Can't wait for it to release in April. I adore Wolf Children so if Mirai gets close to that level i'll be more then happy. One recommendation i would give to people looking for another anime about family relations would be Usagi Drop, it's such a lovely, warm and fuzzy story that will have you smiling throughout it's run. (Or is it Rin?)
I saw this in theaters in December, dubbed, and I really liked it. Like you, it doesn't beat Wolf Children, but I couldn't decide if I liked it more than Boy & The Beast. I think repeated viewings might favor the film, though. I should definitely rewatch all of the original Hosoda films when Mirai comes out!
I definitely agree with being disappointed by Mirai's limited screentime. Her presence made everything better. And since the Japanese title of the film is Mirai no Mirai, it was definitely referring to her and not just the future in general. Of course, whenever I comment on one of your videos about Hosoda, I have to mention that your opinion about Summer Wars is completely wrong, and it is one of my favorite movies of all time the same way Wolf Children is one of yours. That may explain the difference of opinion here as well. Hosoda is still one of my favorites, and I wonder what he is going to do next, now that he has made a film about each of the major familial relationships.
At first I wasn't a fan of the disjointed storytelling either, but after putting a lot of thought into it I started to enjoy what they did One of the main themes of the movie is that life is made up of small individual moments, and when you take those individual moments and put them together they create a story that helps shape who you are This theme can be seen displayed multiple times throughout the movie such as with the photo album where you see a pictures of the mom as a kid, the mom's first date with the dad, the wedding day, then when she's pregnant Each photo tells an individual story, but put them together and it makes the story of the mom's life The same thing applies to the beginning of the movie when it's just music playing as a series of pictures show the mom and dad and their life with baby Kun So the reason why I think the movie was structured the way that it is, where it's more like a series of short films telling different stories, is because it's representing the theme of how individual moments can come together and shape your life and who you are In each story Kun had a different adventure, learned different morals, and gained a better understanding of individual family members When you all of those stories together, by the end of the movie you have a new Kun who has applied all that he's learned and has a better understanding of his family and himself
This movie almost get there for me, it has really nice ideas and concepts, and really nice... Sketchs. In the end it has more sketchs than a narrative, for me. All the events who played out I stopped and thought "how could it be better?", and starting talking about how it could stabilish early certain stuff, how it could show progress between the characters. Even Mirai could be more stabilished, her future persona have more "plot" and more depth. It was a eternally "it could've been great" movie

I felt like this movie was a celebration of Hosoda's films. Right of the bat, they make Kun run around like a dog, a clear reference to wolf children. Also when Kun go "inside the tree" every have red border just like in Summer wars when they are in the OZ. But most of all, I feel like Hosoda finally embraced is style and main theme of his movies, Family!
Digimon Our War Game was referenced quite a bit in this episode... that was good for my soul. Also, I love the idea of Mirai, so I will watch it when I get the chance.

All the bits where Kun travels to different times to meet his family members in their youth were amazing. The best part was when he visited his great-grandpa, such a cool dude. And lastly the part when he ends up at the train station, it was proper scary in a child-like way.

I'm surprised you didn't like Boy and the Beast. Imo, it's second only to Wolf Children in terms of story, charcter, and overall message of the film. I liked the characters in girl who leapt through time and summer wars, but thought the story was quite weak for both, and wasn't a fan of the card game ending in the latter.

At first I wasn't a fan of the disjointed storytelling either, but after putting a lot of thought into it I started to enjoy what they did
One of the main themes of the movie is that life is made up of small individual moments, and when you take those individual moments and put them together they create a story that helps shape who you are
This theme can be seen displayed multiple times throughout the movie such as with the photo album where you see a pictures of the mom as a kid, the mom's first date with the dad, the wedding day, then when she's pregnant
Each photo tells an individual story, but put them together and it makes the story of the mom's life
The same thing applies to the beginning of the movie when it's just music playing as a series of pictures show the mom and dad and their life with baby Kun
So the reason why I think the movie was structured the way that it is, where it's more like a series of short films telling different stories, is because it's representing the theme of how individual moments can come together and shape your life and who you are
In each story Kun had a different adventure, learned different morals, and gained a better understanding of individual family members
When you all of those stories together, by the end of the movie you have a new Kun who has applied all that he's learned and has a better understanding of his family and himself
This movie almost get there for me, it has really nice ideas and concepts, and really nice... Sketchs. In the end it has more sketchs than a narrative, for me.

I feel like he could do another movie with the family base on that older version of his self he saw, a more grounded movie about been teenager and family not as over the top but still very heart filled
Welp, now I have to watch Wolf Children
Where's the "let's Jam" Snap?
I feel empty now.
Always a pleasure to hear Arakada talk about Mamoru Hosoda.
Really you loved girl who leap through time ?
