    Honestly, those critics back in 1959 do have merit to come of their criticisms on Sleeping Beauty, Aurora and Philip don’t have much character and the story seems more focused on side characters; which I am fine with, since they are really cool characters.

    • @IsaacCarlson
      @IsaacCarlson  5 лет назад +16

    • @andresoneca4414
      @andresoneca4414 5 лет назад +21

      I disagree, let's be honest, the first Disney movies weren't focused on character arcs, it's like saying fantasy is bad for not having character development, the movie is not guided by narrative or character development, I don't think Aurora doesn't have much character (but philipe yes), but even if it was, it shouldn't be considered a problem, Sleeping Beauty is focused on capturing emotions, it's a film that dialogues with emotions rather than logic; In this case, the characters are of great flora, fauna and meryweather are some of Disney's best protagonists, Maleficent is one of the best villains, and Aurora, well, I advise you to read this page, www.fanpop.com / clubs / disney-princess / articles / 245751 / title / princess-issue-over-analysis-aurora

      André soneca You have a really good point there, it really isn’t too much about the characters themselves back then, rather, it was more about visual and emotional storytelling. I’m not saying that the movie was bad or anything like that, far from it in fact, I am just looking at these earlier Disney princess movies from a rather pointless, pretty nick picky critical point of view

    it’s amazing how history repeats itself. Disney actually abandoned the Princess formula again in the 90’s (even though Jasmine, Pocahontas and Mulan are part of the Princess Franchise, the last true Princess film using the classic formula was Beauty and the Beast), because many people saw the genre as outdated and criticisms of the Disney Princess began to mount. When Bob Iger took over Disney in 2005, his new animation team decided they will revive the formula again with Princess and the Frog and Rapunzel. When PatF did not perform to expectations, Disney refocused their marketing on Rapunzel by changing the name to Tangled and focused more on Flynn Rider in order to break the Princess stigma. While Tangled was a success, many major media outlets and people within Disney thought it was the last of the Princesses for good. There was one project though that was going through development hell at the time, a story even Walt Disney himself couldn’t crack, called the Snow Queen. There were huge debates within Disney on whether or not to make the Snow Queen a Princess film (the original fairytale was not). Disney took a risky gamble and went with the Princess formula with some modifications, and Frozen was released in 2013. The rest is history.

      @@ashanti893 Couple of reasons, one was that it was a 2D animated film in a time when it was seen as obsolete, Disney had gambled on 2D nostalgia amongst fans but that fell short. Two, it had the word 'Princess' in the title, which at the time was not a selling point. Lastly, the movie did not capture enough international audience particularly in Asia, because unlike in the US, that part of the world is less accepting of a darker skinned character.

    Disney was fun back then. But look at them now, all their doing is remaking their classical films into live action and buying companies. Technology allows us to see things that were once animated in real life and no other film company can take beloved stories and bring them to life like Disney. James Levy you...you know having Jewish friends doesn’t mean you can’t be racist right? Walt’s Grandneice even affirmed the fact that he was racist. Disney routinely portrayed Jews and blacks negatively in his films and didn’t want nonwhites working in positions at the Disney Parks other than janitors and backstage jobs And he didn’t want them to direct his films nor did he want women to be animators despite the fact that Most women were film editors back in those days.

      Maryse Bowen I think Cinderella is a good example for girls, Cinderella shows that kindness and femininity aren’t weaknesses, but in fact strengths. Cinderella was abused for most of the film but always kept her kindness and hope, Cinderella always has her head up and is very positive, hence why I believe she’s a positive influence on girls.
      Snow White, just like Cinderella, is very kind and optimistic, she always has a positive outlook. She’s also independent, since she doesn’t rely on anyone else and hardworking as she takes care of seven men.

    Don’t think you will ever see this, but I love the content and I think I speak for myself as well as many others to do an in depth look at the film Disney really tries to sweep under the rug, ‘The Black Cauldron’. I believe it’s not only Disney’s darkest film, but one that is also the most “undisney” if that makes sense. Follows a male protagonist in the princess role, the animation is solid, the music is phenomenal, John Hurt’s voice work for the Horned King is probably the best sounding villain Disney has ever had, and the dark subject matter. Like why make this film? I love it and am always happy when I see it brought up, hell, Disney barley makes merch for it, but when they do it because extremely expensive and valuable, clearly there is an underground love for this movie and I just feel it’s ALWAYS left out of the conversation for being “one of those dark age films” anyway, hope this messages finds you as I think it would make for a great video as not many people have discussed it on RUclips

    I’m surprise to learn that Sleeping Beauty was the 3th princess-movie, as Cinderella has so much more to offer. Cinderella did have a lot of help, but has her own personality, and is a active character - as for Aurora only meet the prince, sleep and wakes up.

    Sooooo many RUclipsrs do modern content which is great, but these historical videos are so interesting due in part to their scarcity.

    May I suggest you do a history on the 2nd Generation of Disney princesses (aka the Disney Renesance princesses aka Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan).
    And after that you can do the 3rd generation of Disney princesses (aka the Disney Revival aka Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna, Elsa, Moana, and Raya).

    Aurora isn't a bad character, nor a bad princess and this is coming from someone who's favorite Disney princess of all time is Calla of Dunwin. Aurora is sadly underused and never given her time to shine on her merits. Far from being a shallow character, Aurora has a keen ability to read people, a deep understanding of all plant and animal life, and even a lot of common sense as she doesn't allow Philip to get a kiss when first meeting him but instead patiently asks for him to come over and introduce himself to her family as the first human being, much less friend or potential mate, she ever met. Philip, as a gentleman, not only respects her boundaries but makes himself presentable to her family and doesn't attempt to use his position as prince of the realm in any way but instead wants to make a good impression of who he is as an individual. So let us compare that to say Ariel who falls for the cute but clueless Eric, or Anna who is such a romantic (and in serious need of emotional help) that she jumps at the first guy who she meets who she finds attractive? How about Merida who is way too impulsive for her own good? Is any of the flack they are given blown out of proportion, or are they given a chance to have their merits appreciated and able to grow from their character flaws? So rather than give Aurora a fair chance, even Disney makes her out to be sort of a shallow somewhat air-headed girl who suffers form narcolepsy rather than someone who had enough raw will to try and resist a serious psychic mind-control and may have if her bumbling care-givers had given her any mental defense training.
    Sleeping Beauty was a very important film to me when I was a kid as it was the only Disney princess film that I could enjoy as Philip actually did something rather than stand around as a plot element or stuffed shirt like other Disney Princes. It also meant a lot as I used to live next to a blonde girl who looked like Aurora and I looked very much like Philip. But as a kid of the 80s the male protagonists I saw as heroes were from G.I.Joe, Transformers, He-Man, Silverhawks, Gummi Bears, Dino-Riders, TMNT, and Thundercats so Sleeping Beauty was the only film I could actually get into and enjoy from Disney outside of Sword in the Stone.
    Later in life I saw a lot of merit and importance in Sleeping Beauty as an excellent cultural analysis movie where the change in arranged marriages to romantic love and the concept of an honor society actually are shown very well and easy to understand ways kids and adults can get. Thus it is one of these movies that you have to put effort into to enjoy which makes it all the better when you do get it.
    Still as a way to give Aurora her own moment to be heroic I have been working on a fanfiction crossover for a while that puts her in the role of a lead protagonist who is the only one who can fix another park with a rather unique set of attractions set during the time shifting from the dark ages of Disney to it's renaissance. If anyone reads this and wants to hear about it please let me know. It is somewhat a crazy crossover, but I promise you it makes sense.

    I respect the original 3 princesses now... Snow White is always nostalgic for me. But if I had to choose a fav out of the three it would be Cinderella. I didn’t realize the war effected a lot more than I thought. Now I’m kind of wishing they made a war princess movie or even a short... not like Mulan, but also not complete propaganda either. Well now that I think about it would be similar to Mulan...
