Napoleon was actually average height for his time. The myth that he was short was English propaganda, which eventually evolved into the "Napoleon Complex" we have today
No he was 5 foot 7 . It was below average for a soldier
@@m3gad3ath He was shorter than his men, yeah. But average height doesn't care if he is a soldier or not.
@@m3gad3ath one Google search will tell you the average height for a Frenchman between 1800 - 1820 was 164 cm. That to inches is actually 5'3
@@m3gad3ath Soldiers weren't taller than the common man. 5.7 was actually slightly above average at the time for any man. He was much shorter than his bodyguards though since he surrounded himself with absolute units which is probably where those misconceptions actually started from.

Nah he was still pretty short among nobles/wealthy
wasnt it that he was average for french people but shorter for british people's average?
@@nlarsonbruh he was actually average height he was like 5.6 or 5.7 which is still pretty average for most countries
@@Nuniixo na bro the average of France and Britain was pretty close it was because French inches were a little longer than British inches. In french measurements he was like 5'1'' and in British inches he was 5'7'' and because of this there was a misunderstanding. But the myth mostly originates from English propaganda.
The Duke of Wellington (the leading commander of the british army during waterloo) once said: "Napoleon's presence on the battlefield was worth forty thousand men”.
and actually once Napoleon was sent to the island of St. Helena he was guarded by 2k british soldiers and 2 ships circling the island every day. You know this guy was feared even after he was defeated
Conciderong that this was his second exile and the first one ended with him escaping Elba and retaking control of France withoit a single battle, it was probably a very good idea to guard him as much as possible.

@@lh2919 He wasn't just a man - he was an emperor
Napoleon is a certified player character and protagonist. Even he knew it. His assessment of his exile is especially revealing about how extremely self-aware he was. He basically was planning out his historical persona, and thought the exile was in many ways the perfect end.
His attempt to see his family and his relationship with a family living on St. Helena adds to it. He is a quite multidimensional character. One might find at least some similarities with Stalin, but they are still very different people.
Not to mention he created the Napoleonic code which was one of the most important documents leading to equality and independence under the government
@@extantfellow46 to be fair that was definitely one of the time’s in history someone needed to step in and gain absolute power considering everyone was just killing whoever they felt like and it was utter chaos. He was the main character
@@extantfellow46 yeah it’s not inherently bad as long as someone who isn’t a power hungry lunatic takes the position which obviously happens pretty rarely due to most not being able to deal with absolute power or being messed up to begin with and getting the position.

The idea of a tragic end for him in st Elena doesn t really fit with the reality. He wanted to go there. It was possible for him to escape to america. His brother, who looked a lot like him, did it. The british Navy controlled the ship several times during the travel, they could never identify him. But Napoleon didn t want to go out like this. Truth is Waterloo was not his finale battle, the last one was fought on St Elena, it was the one for his legacy, and it is his greatest victory. People sometimes forget how unpopular Napoleon was in France, in the end. It s the main reason for his defeat, he no longer had the support of the country. The news of his death actually had very little effect, when it first arrived in France. It is much, much later that his legend won the hearts of the young generation. Napoleon went on that Island, made himself a victim, a martyr. He wrote his biographie, basically, and changed quite a bit of what happened. It was fairly accurate historically, but he gave a very different meaning to many events. He placed himself as a liberator, a man who came from nothing and fought the high-born of Europe to spread the ideas of revolutions. A LOT could be debated about this. True or not, in his final battle, Napoleon defeated not only the british, but all of his enemies, past, present and future.
Indeed
History is written by the victors
Not those of the battles, but rather the ones in our books
History is a set of lies agreed upon

"People sometimes forget how unpopular Napoleon was in France, in the end. It s the main reason for his defeat, he no longer had the support of the country. The news of his death actually had very little effect,"
I agree to disagree, when his remains were finally brought back to France an unbelievably huge crowd gathered to pay their respects to him, even many of his still alive veterans. I forgot his name, but one of them was at death's doors, and begged his doctor to make him live a bit longer to see Napoléon's coffin.
He dressed up in his uniform and saluted the remains, then turned to his men and said "Et maintenant, rentrons mourir." (More or less "And now, let's go back to die")
@@saechabashira8380 no, we simply agree. what you said is true, but it only happened in 1840, many many years after the end of the war, as i said.

Same. More history memes, the better
The reason why people resonate to Napoleon is because in many ways he's like many of us. Had to actually do the hard work while others were promoted based on wealth and politics. Had to prove himself in action which he did so many times. Had to manage both an entire empire and a massive army at the same time while expanding, and maintain what remained of his relations with other countries and politicians. Keep in mind he probably wasn't the most handsome guy, probably wasn't the tallest compared to us nowadays, and was constantly getting bombarded by an entire coalition of armies and politicians. 7 coalitions plus the ones during the revolution before he became emperor. Bro literally got exiled, came back and then finally got exiled a second time. Sure the guy had a huge ego, but he earned his ego. He became the embodiment of hard work and the cycle of greatness. The rise, the resting of laurels and the fall. It's no wonder people still look up to him despite having many goofy things to make fun of him for. No matter how many times he gets flamed on the internet, at the end of the day he still is pretty cool.
yeah I'm one of the greatest rulers in history too
Saying that Napoleon is similar to the average person nowadays because he earned his position due to his achievements unlike the elite of France is kind of insane ngl. Let's not forget that the man was born into lower nobility, his brother even became a somewhat relevant political figure in France, he was an absolute genius and he had already gained much power and social status as an early adult. That's nowhere near relatable to the average person nowadays, what is relatable to the average person are the emotions of depression dipicted in these paintings, wich isn't even fully accurate but that's a whole other story.
Napoleon is probably the reason why im still alive he pushed through everything and did everything he could to stay emperor he is the reason why I haven't written a suicide note

Also, could your expand on it not being accurate?
It's crazy how the last war the coalition made a point to not fight Napoleon head on but instead fight his other generals and commanders.
And when Napoleon finally forced them into a decisive battle at Leipzig his cavalry nearly reached the three coalition monarchs and only turned into a great defeat because one man blew up a critical bridge too early and stranded thousands on the other side, a pretty crazy story to me

It's really interesting to see historical/mythological figures beginning to spring up in meme culture. Sisyphus, Caesar, Napoleon, I even saw a meme posted 9 hours ago with Sigmund Freud.
My first thought is that perhaps the current generation is starting to take an interest in social sciences like History, Philosophy and Psychology, which they are comparing to modern life. As they say, History repeats itself, so some aspects of life can indeed be seen plentifully in history.
Although I'm not a sucker for most social sciences, it's always great to see those more cultured use their knowledge to enrich internet culture.
Napoleon’s nickname ”Petit caporale”
Or ”little corporal” also contributes to the idea of him being short. His nickname was a name of affection due to him even manning cannons during battles, usually the job of a corporal.

this meme represents where even optimism goes to die. Its like realizing that not even hope can save you. Past the limits of pop culture where they say that hope is everywhere to the point that even they will tell you to give up.
Rosa Parks and MLK didn't give up, the hollywood writers didn't give up, and look what they managed to achieve
Napoleon was pretty popular in England at the time since he wanted to end monarchy (something the peasants thought was cool). When he was arrested people spent up to a year's wages to hire boats to see the ship he was held in.

Napoléon the First likely did want to create a dynasty, regarding how he put his brother on The throne of Spain as well.
Napoléon III, which is made fun of in the anglosphere because of the Franco-Prussian war, was far more of what you think his uncle was.
