Napoleon is a certified player character and protagonist. Even he knew it. His assessment of his exile is especially revealing about how extremely self-aware he was. He basically was planning out his historical persona, and thought the exile was in many ways the perfect end.
His attempt to see his family and his relationship with a family living on St. Helena adds to it. He is a quite multidimensional character. One might find at least some similarities with Stalin, but they are still very different people.

The idea of a tragic end for him in st Elena doesn t really fit with the reality. He wanted to go there. It was possible for him to escape to america. His brother, who looked a lot like him, did it. The british Navy controlled the ship several times during the travel, they could never identify him. But Napoleon didn t want to go out like this. Truth is Waterloo was not his finale battle, the last one was fought on St Elena, it was the one for his legacy, and it is his greatest victory. People sometimes forget how unpopular Napoleon was in France, in the end. It s the main reason for his defeat, he no longer had the support of the country. The news of his death actually had very little effect, when it first arrived in France. It is much, much later that his legend won the hearts of the young generation. Napoleon went on that Island, made himself a victim, a martyr. He wrote his biographie, basically, and changed quite a bit of what happened. It was fairly accurate historically, but he gave a very different meaning to many events. He placed himself as a liberator, a man who came from nothing and fought the high-born of Europe to spread the ideas of revolutions. A LOT could be debated about this. True or not, in his final battle, Napoleon defeated not only the british, but all of his enemies, past, present and future.

The reason why people resonate to Napoleon is because in many ways he's like many of us. Had to actually do the hard work while others were promoted based on wealth and politics. Had to prove himself in action which he did so many times. Had to manage both an entire empire and a massive army at the same time while expanding, and maintain what remained of his relations with other countries and politicians. Keep in mind he probably wasn't the most handsome guy, probably wasn't the tallest compared to us nowadays, and was constantly getting bombarded by an entire coalition of armies and politicians. 7 coalitions plus the ones during the revolution before he became emperor. Bro literally got exiled, came back and then finally got exiled a second time. Sure the guy had a huge ego, but he earned his ego. He became the embodiment of hard work and the cycle of greatness. The rise, the resting of laurels and the fall. It's no wonder people still look up to him despite having many goofy things to make fun of him for. No matter how many times he gets flamed on the internet, at the end of the day he still is pretty cool.

Saying that Napoleon is similar to the average person nowadays because he earned his position due to his achievements unlike the elite of France is kind of insane ngl. Let's not forget that the man was born into lower nobility, his brother even became a somewhat relevant political figure in France, he was an absolute genius and he had already gained much power and social status as an early adult. That's nowhere near relatable to the average person nowadays, what is relatable to the average person are the emotions of depression dipicted in these paintings, wich isn't even fully accurate but that's a whole other story.

Random history fact: Napoleon riding a white horse was a bit exaggerated.
He was actually riding a donkey across the harsh mountain tops, but had a painter make it a white horse instead. Mostly for the sake of symbolism and looking like a badass

It's really interesting to see historical/mythological figures beginning to spring up in meme culture. Sisyphus, Caesar, Napoleon, I even saw a meme posted 9 hours ago with Sigmund Freud.
My first thought is that perhaps the current generation is starting to take an interest in social sciences like History, Philosophy and Psychology, which they are comparing to modern life. As they say, History repeats itself, so some aspects of life can indeed be seen plentifully in history.
Although I'm not a sucker for most social sciences, it's always great to see those more cultured use their knowledge to enrich internet culture.

Napoléon the First likely did want to create a dynasty, regarding how he put his brother on The throne of Spain as well.
Napoléon III, which is made fun of in the anglosphere because of the Franco-Prussian war, was far more of what you think his uncle was. I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning, I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
Now the old king is dead, long live the king
One minute, I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
    I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringin'
    Roman Cavalry choirs are singin'
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason, I can't explain
Once you'd gone, there was never, never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world
It was a wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
    Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh, who would ever want to be king?
    I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringin'
    Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason, I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
    Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
    Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
    Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
    Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
    Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
