I am not competing but I really enjoy shooting trap at the range. I have been using $225 H&R Pardner single shot and I was going to invest in a decent shotgun after understanding how to shoot trap. This channel has been coming up on my feed and I saw side by side shooting. I was intrigued by it. I was going to get O/U like most people with big ass ribs on their guns and stuff. After shooting one I wanted something different. I just bought CZ hammer classic and realized no one in my city shoots side by side lol. I will be watching everything this channel has to offer. Thank you for teaching me different culture and tradition.
Best tutorial I have watched on SxS and now I feel so motivated to start shooting with one again! They just look so darn cool and elegant in the swing! Wish I had stuck with them now, especially when I go on some shoots and see some of the traditional older crowd killing storming high birds with them like it is nothing! Who wants to just kill as many birds as possible for goodness sake? We could all go out and buy 34 inch Mote-Carlo cheeked killing machines like Dave Carrie if we wanted to, but where is the sport and respect for the quarry in that? Might as well take a anti-aircraft machine gun and be done with it.
I own several SXS's. 16 ga, 12 ga and a 10 ga. I use them for bird hunting, they are no different to shoot than a semi auto, pump etc just practice.
* The configuration of the stock depends on the manufacturer of the gun, not on how the barrels are positioned. If a person plans on shooting well with any gun, that person must have a gun that let's his shooting eye look down the center of the rib. If a person can't figure out how to efficiently operate double triggers, he probably shouldn't be allowed to be around firearms in the first place. When it comes to shooting heavy loads in a SXS, it all depends on how the gun was manufactured. Modern firearms used for hunting are usually made to digest heavier loads than those made many years ago.
My instructor said, "Hold it like a baby," and your advice and my experience coincides with this quirky personality of the sxs, thanks. Our American made forends are chunkier, of course, so perhaps grip matters a bit, there, too? And it strikes me that the double trigger usage, if it's an older gun like mine with no screw-ins, may depend upon the factory chokes, wouldn't it? Nevertheless, thanks.
Great video on how to shoot a s/s, I am working on body rotation for a smooth swing, throwing the gun up too fast and pushing with the arms is common fault.
When shooters realize you can shoot good sporting scores with s/s demand will rise. I have a Bland 12ga 30", Churchill rib, mounts and shoots like a O/U,
when o/u shooters look down the rib of s/s game gun with sunken rib, throws them off.
Without watching the video I want to say this. I bought an AYA sxs and from the first second i mounted the gun on me, it was perfect. I am more comfortable shooting sxs than any other gun at 22 years of age
You are a lucky man. Don't get rid of it mate, instead, become so good with it that you would never need or want to use a clumsy O/U instead, because if you are really good with a SXS and switch to an O//U it will screw with you and could spoil your shooting. I started with one and was very good and I wish I that I had never changed over to an O/U now. SXS are definitely coming back and for a young guy to become really good with one is going to really put you ahead of the field. Dare to be different!
@@jamesfairmind2247 Hi James. I totally agree with what you said. Being inspired to hunt ethically and traditionally, as well as looking up to my grandpa, SxS is my choice of gun especially at hunts were lead is permitted. I actually found this beautiful AYA (based on serial number a 1942-45 model, possibly an Iberia) for a bargain of $246. After a good maintenance it is just perfect.

Nice video, like the recent trend of “shooting tips” videos. I have several sxs, I struggle with the double trigger but really enjoy my 486.
Double triggers are just a better system, in a split second you can decide which barrel to fire. Single trigger is by far an inferior way of shooting, fashion has got in the way of utility. I admire the engineering required to make a single trigger work, but as a shooting tool, single trigger is inferior.
Got a few a few years ago and never gave it a second thought, I own every conceivable gauge/action, and I just pull whatever and go hunting/shooting . . .load-point-shoot . . . simple
You also need to remember as a left handed shooter most SxS shotguns are right handed with the rear trigger cast to the right. I have a left handed SxS and the rear trigger is cast to the left for ease of getting that rear trigger.
I can't shoot a side by side without either a Prince of Wales or full pistol grip. I had a matching pair made in Italy a couple of years ago.
The specs were single trigger, 28 inch barrels, multi choke, file cut Rib, and high in the comb. When I was being measured for them, the stock specialist said, "If you raise it further it will look like a trap gun stock". He was so reluctant to do it that he came to the Hotel while we were having breakfast to discuss it further, as he thought it was a strange request, Which resulted in a trip back to the factory to satisfy both parties.
They shoot really nicely and are very comfortable with a sight picture very similar to a trap gun with the target remaining visible most of the time and not having to blot it out quite so much.
I struggled for years trying to adapt to shoot a SxS with a concave rib, having previously only shot a O/U or S/A.
Then I read and learned about the Churchill Rib. Which is a centre raised rib shaped to give an optical illusion of longer barrels.
I bought an AYA BL 25 and never looked back. I now swop from several modern O/U to S/S without a drop in confidence or scores.
Only 2 side by sides I could ever shoot with any consistency was a 12 gauge Winchester 23UK and a Beretta 20 gauge 471 Silver Hawk, both with 28” barrels. Tried AYA’s, hit one miss one job, tried a clients Boss sidelock for a drive on high pheasants, 16/ 23, again hit one miss one, no consistency.

I own three side by sides, a Merkel 28 Ga, Connecticut Shotgun RBL Launch Edition 20 ga and a beautiful L.C.Smith Specially Grade 16ga manufactured in Dec 1912. Though I have been shooting for 60 plus yrs I only started shooting SxS about 12 yrs ago when I started hunting Woodcock and Ruffed Grouse more often. I always thought it was almost sacrilegious to hunt/shoot them using anything else (I could hear people screaming as I wrote that). I’ll have to admit my shooting accuracy went downhill when I started shooting SxS’s. The comments I received most often when shooting with others was,, “I like them, I just can’t hit anything with them”. I persisted for six or seven years then set them in the back of my gun cabinet and went back to my O/U’s with adjustable stocks and comb’s, my shooting improved immediately. I still like the looks and feel of those SxS’s and occasionally drag them out from the back of the gun cabinet and give it a go again. Before I retired I spent a lot of time in London, if I had known about your school I surely would have spent some time with you. This video was the best explanation of shooting SxS vs O/U that I have seen, thank you.

Bought a sxs as my first shotgun, I’m still missing more than I hit but at least with the sxs I’m doing it in style
I prefer side by sides, got a number 2 and a 486. It’s the looks too
Very nice video. From my limited understanding I would like to ask then if you should see more rib when shooting with a sxs than you see with an o&u, or if the sxs should be fitted in a way that will allow you to see the same amout of rib without placing your head so hard on the stock. Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Can u do a side x side gun review
Good video! I typically use 7/8 oz. To 1 oz. Loads for sporting clays at around 1160 fps. I save the 1-1/8 oz 1300 plus fps. loads for birds. Seems to work in my SxS 12 gauge. For most hunting though I tend to prefer my 28 gauge SxS, much lighter to carry around and quicker.
What loads do you use?

What's your opinion on the straight arm (holding the barrels) issue that some people raise regarding shooting a side-by-side? Is it really important? I don't see you doing, but do you think it's actually a bad idea?
I haven't been clay shooting in years. 15 years ago I used to use semi autos and now and again ou's. Now I am older in years and never got on with sxs's I feel like having the challenge that and the wife wants to go shooting for the first time ever. Would it be frowned on if I went to our first shoot at a club I have never been to, her with her OU and me with one of my sxs?
As a general piece of advice - it's completely pointless in you saying "it's there, not there".
We are not there with you, we cannot see the fine details of your shotgun positioning.

Don't you choose what barrel to shoot first according to the barrel and choke depending on the flight of the bird ?
I shoot mine with 21g and is great 😊
How many schools know how to do it though David?

Can't be to hard as they are the only guns I own and shoot apart from my very first which is a cheap single shot and a single shot muzzleloader
