I am American and hunt with a SxS. The guy teaching tiny John how to use it is spot on. A SxS is about the gun being an appendix of your body. There is no controlling. There is only a natural bond. SxS needs a come back asap!
Simon is such a great communicator. He conveys a lot of complicated information quickly, fluidly but clearly. And you both naturally work together, great video
Thank you my friend no wonder the crow wasn't letting a crow speak up
I don't hunt. I don't shoot clay. I don't even own a shotgun (yet). But somehow I enjoyed every minute of this.
@@ShootAUT A year later, have you enjoyed shooting? Did you buy a side x side?
Man, coming from an American, I am very jealous of the elegant and gentleman like shotgun shooting culture in the UK. These types of firearms are often dismissed as fudd junk in the US but I think they are actually quite beautiful and an art. This video just confirmed my decision to buy a side by side soon ;)
if americans want to emulate the uk shooting culture they need to dress as nice too - tired of the tshirts and jeans i see on the range
I love the English style of trap/skeet shooting. Living in the USA, I would love to see more of this style of shooting. I am a big fan of the SxS shotgun. I really wish I had access to some of these wonderful, vintage classics found in the UK.
When I was a student in the early ‘90s I used to call into John Dickson gun shop on rose street..... well on the corner and stare at the Dickson Round actions they had in there...... in those days £20k would get you a good one ( still untouchable as a debt ridden student) but it was nice to dream......
I have been saying for years that the SXS is the forgotten gun. How many times have you been in a gunshop and there are basically no side by sides on the racks ? They are dismissed as being old fashioned and fuddy-duddy, when they are a design designed and refined in the extremely competitive world of the British guntrade in Victorian times. I have a couple and love them. An OU feels heavy and cumbersome to me now.
yes its a very good point , SxS are very good in hunting fields especially and more relay-able but i think people likes the OU mire than a SxS because of the chokes that can be attached to an OU
our fond memories starting out shooting , or the most enjoyable days only had side by sides , indelible on the mind to
reflect with affection ; o/u 's are the new vouge and undoubtably good yet nothing looks better than the one with the s/s its just a tradational look that stands the test of time .
@@johndejure9849 Agree 100 percent mate,,,,,,from another STEVENS
@@johndejure9849 well of course the SxS will always be the old gun that never gets old cause although there has been the semi auto and the ou but the hunters certainly will get them selves an SxS as an extra because the SxS are almost a global heritage
@@manofkentcatapultsgunsando5069 yes, the mid 1970's , starting out with the .410 to the s/s 12g mentored by the

I really like these videos with Simon, his philosophies on shooting are very insightful!
I was 15 with my first double barrel 12 bore. I put a lot of birds on the dinner table back in the day. It was an LC Smith . Johnny you just made me go back in time with my thoughts thanks mate
We can use a snooker table rest for that
Slightly bias because a lifetime friend sadly no longer with us owned a 30' Damascus barrelled Round Action Dixon.I shot the gun now some 40 years ago.It was I recall to use a more modern analogy like ''skywalkers light sabre''. Unfortunately very much a case of if only I knew then what I know now.
Very enjoyable TGS episode Jonny.Really informative.
Never a truer statement `A Dickson Round Action is a fine dining gun` up there and beyond the Holland & Hollands / Purdeys. Extremely informative video.
The Brits tend to shoot guns with barrels that are too long. Part of the Dixon's revelation for you was its 28" barrels. I'm almost your height and remember well my first day with 28 inchers and then began to wonder what one of Mr. Churchill's 25"s felt like. I still don't know despite sitting here in my den looking at 5 SXS's and knowing that there are 6 or 7 more in the safe. Very good video. It's fun to see the enthusiasm of young people.
Wonderful stuff. Great to see some footage of Simon’s effortless style in action. Interesting discussion points and some great photography from Sash on the clay shots. Great content, gentleman.
I shoot game with a 25” sxs, clays with a 26” ou and enjoy considerable success with both. Friends are shooting clays with 30 and 32’ barrels and mercilessly mocked my 26” until my shot to kill ratio wiped the smile away. The 25” will bring down a 40 yard plus pheasant equally as well as any other gun, providing the barrels are pointing in the right direction and that is the key.
To fund my shooting I won’t use anything longer than a 14” ou for post offices, banks and security vans.
😂😂😂
Best video of yours yet, talking proper opinions on guns instead of the usual marketing shpeel (not that you normally do that), more of this!
Excellent filming and editing too!
Its Golf! It's not the club its the swing! On the other hand, That side by side seems to have a lesson built in!
But if one could own that gun, maybe I'd care less about shooting. Forgive the praise, but this was a spectacular video on four levels, art, shooting, flow. conversation. Thank You. Herman Meilinger
It is more enjoyable to discuss shotguns at shooting range than in gun room. Beautiful discussion very informative practically.
One of the best videos you have produced over the years. Brilliant content. Thank you.
Jon, just like to say how much I enjoyed watching this video, as a lover of side X sides of which I have 3 in my collection but nothing to compare with the quality of the ones you were using, but I really enjoy using them all both in the field and at our clay club, more of the same please. Regards and stay safe.
I was shooting my 119 year old JP Sauer and Sohn 16 bore cape gun today and came home to this. Thank you.
What a beautiful piece ! Another completely absorbing video, I could listen to Simon talk about shooting all day.
"You're living proof that we're not getting any shorter as a species, Jonny" :D :D :D
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Brilliant stuff.
Really enjoyed that. Sasha, you are absolutely brilliant at your "trade" :-) TGS videos really stand out from all the rest.
Fantastic conversation. To plumb the depths of wisdom therein is the challenge! Mr. Reinhold rocks on steady feet.
Think I could listen to Simon all day, and I'm old probably enough to be his dad. Does he give lesson's? Another Great Video Thanks Jonny & TGS Team.
He does indeed, check out his website to contact him www.simonreinhold.co.uk
You two are a pleasure to watch please make more content.
I always enjoy seeing the British side-by-sides in action. I recently migrated away from my 12 and 16 gauge Browning BPS guns for Rizzini and Beretta side-by-sides in 16 and 12 gauges, respectively. They just seem to point themselves. Can't wait to try them out on our Grouse here in northeast Wyoming. Thanks for sharing the video with us.
So, how did you like the Beretta’s during grouse season in WY? I’m debating whether to splurge on a Beretta 486 in 20 gauge or pick up a good used Browning BSS in 20. I used my 12 ga BSS last season in UT but it’s a big lunker to carry around chasing grouse.
Great video. You & Simon make the shooting & the talking seem so effortless.
Very much enjoyed. More of Simon and you discussing these sxs shotguns. Even the field grade types the common man can afford. Thank you both for your insite .
Lovely film, mostly because there on the screen was my all-time favourite SxS.. a Dickson SxS. My late grandfather used one, and as his pal and helper, as I grew older I loaded for him.
I didn't get the gorgeous gun, my [then] heart's delight.. grandfather died suddenly and my scabby uncle, his son.. said not a word, and.. sold it into the trade. Nice.
We have not spoken since..
Happy days.
Same, same. My grandfather passed and his sxs Webley and Scott suddenly disappeared. The a-hole uncle strikes again, everybody has one.
Fantastic, so much knowledge covered and amazing imagery. This is a clip I'll show to other's outside of the sport.
Fine piece Jonny.
You guys did justice to what are true shooting works of art. Designed for a purpose, but created with passion. Quality will always shine through, and anyone who has the opportunity to handle one of these fine pieces while immediately feel the difference between them and a mass-produced gun.
Excellent video really interesting, learned to shoot with an Aya yeoman 45 years ago and shot it till it rattled in my hands.
After many years of o/u went back to an English boxlock ejector this year and love it, great instructor could do with a lesson.
More people should own one - many used ones aren't v expensive. And double trigger does have its advantages. V fond of my 70s Beretta 426e - my go to game gun.
I have a Moore and Grey SBS - Love it. I don't understand why most people don't like them... Great Vid
Your love is understanding a fine shotgun . I've had over and under shotguns ,but then I quit listening to the people with one eye on their forehead and one eye on their chin . The big difference that I noticed right away is they crack open shorter and load easier. . A nice practical vintage gun is an LC Smith. It's a work horse . My boy almost took state in trap competition and was our top gun but only after stopping with an over under . If you can find a Barretta 626 onyx buy it . It's again a work horse and it throws slugs very nice. Right on at 30 yards and 4" easy at about 60 yards . Mine is 26" barrels . The LC is 30" with full and full . It would've helped my boy to open it but he loved it so much he didn't want to touch it ,I have the same love. 😎
Sxs are coming back! Specially with young traditionalists like me and my friends. By the way I'm from the southeast USA
Simon knows his stuff
So insightfull on many levels. Thank you for this enjoyable gem.
Priceless. I shoot a 20 yr old Weatherby Orion 12 OU and a 15 yr old Franchi Highlander 20 SXS and they both are great guns. But when you drop a quail, dove, pheasant, or duck with the 20 in 35mph wind, it is awesome!
Great video that shows the beauty of a SBS, I have a simple AYA yeoman which just feels right both in handling and in my shoulder not to say of the smile it brings compared to my O/U. Thank you for such a great insight
Mindless and utterly concentrated Love that!
Same dichotomy can be found in judo, to be a Good training partner you need to stand straight/stiff but at the same time relaxed
What an outstanding video with great discussion. Thanks for making it!
I love SXS shotguns. I won my state sporting clays SXS class championship a few years back with a nice old beretta SXS. (also won the pump gun class). Have finally got the SXS i always wanted (expensive). A model 21 Winchester. Its wonderful
I love my sbs Bozard & Co. I often take it out more than my trusty old Browning 325. Excellent work chaps. Keep it up.
In the US and I love SxS been shooting one since age 12 I'm now 65, and have 20,16 and 12 bore. Have loved them, the splinter forearm is more graceful would love to see a comeback.
Really interesting video Jonny - Simon's chat and thoughts were fascinating to listen to 😎😎
There are some old guns that feel almost haunted, as if they know what they are doing, they come to the shoulder and swing naturally and work beautifully. Great video, and nicely done Jonny and Simon. I think the McNaughton Edinburgh gun, looks nicer, but it looks nicer than everything!
I agree 👍🏴
Except they’re all too long in the stock.
I'm glad you finally get sxs's. I would love to have Simon as a shooting instructor.
I have always got them, but that Dickson was by far one of the sweetest I have ever shot. Even missing was enjoyable.
And he does give lessons, and quite possibly worth the travel?
I’m a pretty serious, though recreation only, clay shooter. Theses videos are really beginning to sell me on vintage side by sides. Keep them coming.
Always great content on this channel. I would love some more text in the description about the firearms shown/used in these videos. I always look forward to an upload.
Great video once again, I have to say a few years ago I picked up a sleeved William Jeffrey’s side by side for not a lot of money at all and what fun I’ve had with it on small driven days and walked up outings, if you got a space in your cabinet I would recommend filling it with a side by side.
Lovely guns and a great video. I have a number of older English side by sides and can look at them for hours appreciating that they were made by men using hand tools...files, draw knives etc.. To top it off, they still work very well, including an 1863 Damascus barrelled hammer gun converted from pin fire to centre fire in 1875.
Absolutely loving your videos. Can't believe i haven't found your channel sooner. Excellent content feels like i know you all. Loved this video. Im a cynergy black ice owner shooter and i love it is like an extension of my arm. Keep up the good work cheers.
My goodness what a great review.
Liked & subscribed.
Looks like a side by side is on my purchase order now.
Wow!
Fabulous, elegant & refined...
Over under?
Purpose built, rugged & steady
Have a Alex Martin Sidelock from 1920 with 30” and 25” ribless barrels. Depending upon the barrels used it is two totally different guns. I love the ribless ones!!
What a great watch 👌enjoyed this one 👊
An hour or two with an instructor is so helpful
I almost skipped past this video but really glad I didn’t. Fascinating!
My Webley 700 s/s hand made in Birmingham, is fantastic but these look unbelievable to shoot.
Beautiful gun , S+S guns are coming back and are as deadly as 0+U guns . I’ve shot for years and now have four S+S guns, three sixteen and one twenty bore and enjoy using them. Great video guys 👏👏
If we're comparing firearms to vehicles. I have a dump truck. 1980s Stevens H series. People compare it to swinging a 2x4 and blocky. But it feels more natural to me then any of my autos o/u or even pumps that I've been shooting for 25 years.
Thank you for another great video. Between this one and the upcoming hammer gun video, I'm quite excited about things to arrive in the coming weeks. 😉
I feel I’ll have to dress up as you and go and shoot it a video

fantastic. any chance of a film with info on sxs with sleeved barrels and steel shot
That was a fantastic one, guys !!!!
What stunning guns
looking to get a side by side in the next Holts auction.
I love rough hunting my Webley and Scott 2020K 26". I saw you guys had a 3020K in the shop, I know its not a Miroku but its too bad you never did a review on it.
A nice Video, like some others. I´ve got an over under and now I think, I will buy a side by side at my local gun store. Very nice. Thank´s a lot!
One of your best uploads!
Great video, I'm loving older style / unusual rifles and shotguns. My last 'new gun' from the '00's' was for vermin control the rest date back 45 /60 years (not old by any means compared to many) allsteal and wood and my next potential purchase will be in a not so fashionable calibre.
I've asked this before and would like a experts opinion in the answer. Were will be stand with older guns that are capable of taking standard steel loads (chambers size / pressure compatible) but have chokes that are too tight, for example the old bog standard 1/2 and full?
The kicker to the questions is .... 'what to do if there is NO option of opening up the chokes and/or reproofing the barrels!'
Are there infact options, besides the eye wateringly priced non steel shot alternatives, coming down the pipelines for guns that cannot be opened up?
Looking forward to your answers.
I only own one sxs, but I absolutely love shooting it. I tend to hunt upland with it quite a bit as well.
I have recently bought two SXS. Great fun, Im still adapting, but worth every nostalgic coin they cost.
Great video. It never ceases to amaze me how undervalued the side by side market is in the UK. I feel like Americans are more likely to shoot something old before they shoot something new, which doesn’t track with the culture at large, to me.
I have totally enjoyed this video and it refails a lot of information.
Hi I would love a English side by side for this level of value, I’m a retired American Soldier with 5x combat tours who can’t afford the big names. I have so much respect for British shooting sports. I’d be so grateful for links to places that sold side by sides like this that would import to my state. Thank you
I am also from the states .There is something about a side x side that says classic old school .I find myself going to mine more and more
Informative, interesting and very enjoyable. Brilliant.
I loved this video and I love my side by side, like Simon says, I've got a 525 as my van, but I prefer my sxs Aya no.3 I would love another side by side
Fantastic video, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it!
Been shooting English guns all my life and the Dickson is a gun I hope to have one day a, a thing if beauty,I bought an over and under last year after 41 years of shooting just needed to give one a chance, the love story lasted a couple of months.
I have been on the sxs kick for while now.
i have beautiful triumph. ( it was a junk gun. i have restored it) im now looking for a sxs miroku. to match the twin mk70s.
but i now have the local gun shop calling me to let me know about any sxs
Riveting , really people here in the states seem to not get it when I show up with an old high end SxS, I feel the hunt is enhanced.
Hey Johnny, this episode made it to the pages of my Shooting Sportsman magazine
Really!? Awesome!
@@tgsoutdoors I’ll contact you through the form on the shop’s website so I can send you the blurb
Fantastic video guys - your presentation styles really complement each other. Out of interest, what was the barrel length of the Dickson? Thanks!
Friend had a beautiful W R Pape Hammer sometimes called the Purdey of the North , would have loved to have owned it but sadly not to be
Excellent video so far, I was wondering what cartridges you were putting through it
Brilliant video, makes me want an English side by side.
Great video; lots of excellent insights here.
Unfortunately, (or fortunately?) SXS's are becoming more popular in the US. I would see maybe 1 a week come through the trap range, but now there's at least 10 a week. The prices in Pawnshops/Gun stores/GunBroker have doubled.
I enjoyed the story on the Dickson shotgun. I note that you mention it is a Damascus barrelled gun and am curious to know your thoughts on shooting damascus guns with modern cartridges. My family owns a Henry Atkin ejector from late 19th century that is in nice condition with 2 1/2 in chambers. It's an heirloom but I believe guns were built to shoot not to look at. 65mm shells are not all that common "down under"
great video nice to see some side by side content thank you .
A great video
I decided last year to stop making my Merkel 147 a safe queen. I took it out pheasant hunting. OMG what a joy. I dropped 4 birds with 5 shots. The last one I missed the fist shot because I actually got on it too quick. I took the shot at like 7 yds and think i just buzzed the tail feathers with a pattern that was probably still the size of a silver dollar. Second shot at it was more reasonable at probly 15 yds and it dropped like a rock.
As a Ferlach Gunmaker and a former Hartmann&Weiss employee i truly enjoyed this video! Keep up the great work 👍 and if you ever want to come to Ferlach and to take a closer look at the Ferlach gunmaking trade , i would be happy to show you around! Best regards

I adore the straight stocked 30” 20 they do. Will ask and see if they provide

Got this old Husqvarna 1310 Deluxe. Fits me beautifully, however, we are only allowed steel shot on the range.. Been considering boring it up to 76mm and let it live on the trapper range for the rest of its days.
Neithless to say me and the gunsmith will have to have a discussion whether it will take trap steel shot or not..
