DIY River Rock Garden Path using Cobblestones

- This river rock walkway is one of the very unique features of my own backyard. It was a fun garden path project and the end result came out amazing. But, I did make some mistakes along the way so I'll share all of that with you in this video.

Pros of a river rock walkway vs. traditional walkways
- this stone pathway doesn't need to be level.
- you don't have to dig down into the ground to create the walkway.
- you can do small sections at a time and expand the rock path over time.
- a river rock walkway can be a really unique feature in your garden.
Cons to a river rock walkway
- it's not as stable as other walkways and wouldn't be good for anyone with mobility issues.
- it's more labor & time intensive than rock walkway projects using larger stones.
- larger cracks between stones mean there's more opportunity for weeds to grow.
- it's hard to remove sand or concrete mix from the porous surface of the cobblestones used to make this pathway.
What I'd do differently if I were to make another small stone pathway in my landscape:
- use thicker stones with one flat side
- create at least a 3-4" base layer to squish the river rocks into
- use paver edging along the sides of the pathway to prevent any erosion along the edges of the walkway
- create a consistent sand/concrete mix
- avoid using polymeric sand
- I did not use plastic barrier for prevention of weeds and do not regret that decision; it's fine with out it
- take your time and you'll end up with a beautiful garden pathway that's a work of ART

Thank you for sharing this video. I would much rather watch a video and learn from other people's mistakes than watch a video that is perfect. 😊
Glad it was helpful! Thank you 😊
For a good mortar mix I use 2 Portland cement, 1.5 lime, 9 sand. Make it thick not too much water, I'm building rock walls and walkways with this mix with great success
Thanks for sharing 😊
Great video - informative, honest and insightful... I believe we learn more from mistakes than success... certainly I prefer understanding what not to do from an instructional video like this! Thanks for sharing it...
Thanks for your kind words. Glad I got the courage to make this one even though it didn't work out perfectly! Was worried about the comments but everyone's been great.
I love this video! I'm so glad you posted it so we can learn from your experience. I really appreciate your sense of humor and down to earth realness!
Thank you. I'm glad it was helpful 😊
You are right ...there are no videos...planning on doing this at my house in the woods...lots of sand so I can dig a bit into the area of the path and fill as you have and use the river rock. We have alot of rocks left over from a different project and thought I would make a pathway through my garden...yes it will be time consuming. This gives me a bit of confidence to get started and I have watched other project videos making pillars and bird baths to help with a finished look at top using brush and a bit of water (which will also hopefully help to clean stones before it dries)...
Thanks for posting...great look and it is a forgiving project so don't worry about mistakes...it is a natural look that we are going for!
Absolutely! It looks great, even though it's not perfect... And I'm definitely ok with that. But, I still wanted everyone to know that there are flaws and cons to it so they can decide for themselves! Good luck on your project 😊
You’re so lovely. I greatly appreciate videos where people reflect on their projects and realize their mistakes. Even a list of what not to do is helpful when there is no info at all out there on how to do it in the first place. Hope you do a follow up video of how to do it right.
Not sure there needs to be a follow up video as I explained how I would do it if I were starting again. I don't see myself doing this project again, honestly.
Also, thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching! I didn't mean to be so short in my comment 😊
No worries! If it’s not a project for you then I totally get it. I did something somewhat similar but I mortared in stones to make a pond (i.e. in ground bird bath 😂) and when I was chias mixing the mortar in random quantities trying to get the right texture I definitely thought of you! So you warned me, but as Alanis says, “it’s the good advice I just didn’t take”
Thank you for sharing. Been collecting my stones.
Love the peanutbuttery! That is perfect!!!! I know exactly what you mean!!
Love the video, LOVE the walkway. Mistakes keep it real.
Thanks so much. I'm all about keeping it real here hahaha
I like your honesty, needing this.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
Found your video just in time for my similar project Thank You so much Great watching it
That's all really useful advice thanks. I'm making a river stone pathway soon and I will definitely use your advixe
Great video. Thanks for sharing
i like you and your video. very informative. I watch lots of rockwork videos and this one is unique.
Thank you!
thank you
Thank u 4 sharing
Amazing!! Thank you for this and for your honesty with your mistakes. I have a little pathway that just ends and I want to continue it so it meets my garden gate so this is super helpful!! 🥰
glad it was helpful :)
I love the video, I am looking into doing it
Thank you for sharing your mistakes!! I know I’m not allow. 😋
Great video! I saw a similar pathway on Pinterest & couldn’t find how to make the pathway.
I appreciate you doing this video.
Job well done!
Glad it was helpful!
It looks great! You must have felt as if you had done a million squats! I did something similar years ago but I used a dry concrete mixture that I set all of the stones in and then misted it repeatedly with water. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. I also moved not long after that so no clue how it held up! LOL.
Haha yes it's a great workout. Polymeric sand is what you're referring to. I did use it in this project but don't think it was necessary (if I were to do it again).
Would you consider surface grinding the stone to make it more flat?
Oh wow. No I would never attempt grinding the stones (personally) . So much dust. It's really not hard to find flat stones. But of course it's up to you.
Did you use quikrete concrete (cement, sand, rocks all pre-mixed) to mix with the sand or just cement?
Quickrete
@@PrettyPurpleDoor thank you, I knew that though, quikrete makes hundreds of products.
The only reason I ask is because it looks like you used standard quikrete, which is cement already mixed with sand and aggregates (aka concrete), so if you added 4 part sand to that (resulting in 16:1 aggregate to cement) it would weaken it greatly causing the crumbling problem. The 4:1 mortar mix is for when mixing sand with straight portland cement, not concrete.
Did you say that you used weed barrier? I don’t see any in the pathway as you are constructing ?
No I did not use it.
I’m not sure why the music in the beginning?
Think it’s like a waiting room while friends gather for her live post 👍🏼 💐 💗
Yes it was just waiting room music 🎶🎶🎶 😁
