      I respect him for some of those too but his constant disapproval for CGI is stupid and let’s him down. Dunkirk proved why he needs to use CGI, the attention to detail in that film is not bad it’s non-existent! I’m not just talking about using the wrong vehicles, I’m talking about being able to see buildings that were literally built in the 21st century along with many many other errors which could all be wiped away with CGI.

    • @antona.8659
      @antona.8659 4 года назад +22

      @@lejam0771 he has no "disapprovel" of CGI. He's used it on most of his films. He has disapprovel of using computer-generated imagery as the easiest option, and also when the lack of quality of it takes you out of the movie. Nolan shoots movies the way they'd be shot in the 60s and 70s. It has to be in camera for him. And relying on CG doesn't automatically make your movie immune to things that shouldn't be in the film appearing in them. Such as when a modern vehicle appeared in one of the Piates of the Caribbean movies. Those movies were all CG, and yet couldn't do anything about that. And another thing is, between things being done in camera, and having mistakes, vs things being done in post, but things that look awful due to laziness of the filmmakers and due to the awful nature of CG being extremely fake when used inappropriately (watch any CGI scene from almost any MCU movie), I'll pick the former.

    Nolan missing genres:
    Western - time travel across generations of pilgrims to modern era, through the defects of inbreeding.
    Comedy - the effects of comedy in the brain and time distortion by serotonin and dopamine.
    Horror - ghost perceive time differently, they hunt places and descendants across centuries.
    Romance - "Time stops when I'm with you" (I know, I know, I will STFU)
    Animation - toons fighting frame rates, frame formats, digital vs celluloid, photons vs pixels vs stop-motion, Epic!
    Musical - nothing distorts time better than music, tempo, beats, instruments, vinyl, magnetic tape - a gifted blind-mute musician turned detective can travel through sound waves back to the moment of the recording, he can walk around a sound scape and visualize it and look around corners. One of my favorite Nolan-isms is the use of cutaways in the editing. His films always have hard-hitting fast cutaway edits, either in flashbacks or moments of clarity. My favs are the ones in Memento, which are almost like teeny tiny micro VFX shots where Leonard's lies to himself start to fall apart. Like when for just a few frames, you see Guy Pearce in the hospital instead of Sammy in a flashback. Or in Dark Knight Rises when Gordon's speech is ended short by him flashing back to Two-Face screaming for blood. His mangled scary half-face is framed JUST away from Gordon's for the extra jarring effect to make the audience feel unsettled exactly like Gordon is. I don't know if that's necessarily a NOLAN thing since I don't think he's ever been credited as the editor, but it's def a consistent thing in his oeuvre.

    It's so cool that you guys made this video now. It's been something I've been thinking about lately. I've got a couple of notes though. Sorry ahead of time. I have been sitting with this for a few moments.
    Dark Knight Rises is actually about the blurring of time, which represents the trauma of Bruce's back being broken and the impact that such an injury would have on a life. Trauma victims often feel lost from time when recovering from such an event, out of place within their own life. Their own narrative structure is disrupted in a way that time often blurs during recover.
    Insomnia is about the idea of 'loss of time' due to the shift to daylight all the time. The main reason our protagonist is so undermined by such a simplistic antagonist is that he hasn't had enough time to adjust to the shift in the nature of time as he perceives it. It's because of his loss of time that he anchors back to his heaviest memory, a tragic one, to keep himself intact enough to push forward.
    I have an idea about Dunkirk... but I'm still pondering, so I'll let it be. Thank you so much for the video. You found words I was thinking already and presented them perfectly to me. Amazing video, amazing team at Cinefix. God bless.

    Thank you, when I am stuck indoors here in Melbourne, Australia, I needed CineFix to come out with one of their beautiful deep dives in to the world of cinema, and you didn’t stop short in your own masterpiece, thank you again. How about a friend of Cristopher Nolan, Edgar Wright, although he doesn’t have a back catalogue as vast as Christopher Nolan you may need to wait a couple of decades, time plays its part again!

    There is a scene in Skyfall between Q and James Bond which goes:
    James Bond: Then why do you need me?
    Q: Somebody needs to pull the trigger
    James Bond: Or not!
    I think that makes Nolan who he is, to decide when something should not be done!

    • @foglias
      @foglias 4 года назад

      Memento means Remember in Latin. So, every time a color scene starts Nolan forces you remember the previous color scene. It’s an imperative title. The key is in remembering.

    Such a great video, guys!! A truly worthy homage to the man's work and legacy. I think subjectivity has always been at the heart of Nolan's films, and time is essential to understand it since it is a mental construct, a creation of civilization... Thanx!!

    Though I'll admit the time theme felt a bit forced for TDK and TDKR (but at least you aknowledged that one perfectly), the essay is, as usual, extremely well executed. And what a way to edit a video. Those transitions are elegant as f+++. Nicely done. Stay classy.

    all of his movies explore obsession and how much spectacle and wonder can be drawn out of the ordinary and understood confines of our world. he really likes taking the familiar and doing something incredible or bombastic with it. Often this is catalyzed by a mans obsessive drive. that's my observation of Nolan's stuff

    Compelling essay here, though it's worth mentioning that it is actually confirmed how much time passes in The Dark Knight Rises. 6 months pass after the prologue in Uzbekistan, then a couple of days pass before Bane's takeover which lasts for 5 months. Some time is shown to transpire before 23 days are left, Bruce escapes The Pit the next day. After Gotham is saved some weeks to a month would've passed for the Batman statue to have been made and the change in weather.
    I like how it has a seamless, dreamlike feel to how events pass like reflection of past events; in addition to its epic sweep and Charles Dickens' influences that make it one of the most subversive and enthralling in the superhero genre.
