In the process of rebuilding a room that doesn't really exist anymore as a result of hurricane Ian. I've never done this before and I'm learning a lot from your video or should I say videos .... thanks so much for inspiration and ideas.

New subscriber. Your video is great as I plan to build an ADU. Do you have any plans for a 2-story small house under the same 434 square foot? My code here has a maximum ADU height of 20 feet, so I want to make the most of that by having a second story with a vaulted metal roof 3/12 pitch, with around a 6'11 wall height. I'm a DIYer, so I don't know yet how to best include a staircase in the plan and how the vaulted roof is attached to the second story.

    My suggestions.
    1. Don't break the plate on top a lay out but closer to between lay out. I know, nobody does.
    2. make the stud that is holding your headers up, run from the bottom plate to the header. passing the window sill in between creates a compression point which defeats the purpose of posting the header up. I know, nobody does.
    3. Don't stack that bridging block on top of the drywall backing.
    4. Add a stiff back across the middle of the ceiling.
    5. Maybe adding a lay-in brace on the center walls.
    6. Give the sheetrock guy a lot of backing.
    7. No cripples needed above the header unless it's on layout. Doublers aren't needed. They are doing nothing.

Definitely some more things to consider and I am planning on addressing some if not all of the suggestions like yours in a another video for this series about ways to save money and make the building stronger. Thanks for sharing.

@@gregvancom I'll keep watching. Thanks for the lessons. I can do it on a board. Wish I could use the computer. I can also do it for real. I built golf course homes from 92-2000. We were called the Henry Ford's of the framing business.

How do u know ur ceiling joist should b 16 or 24 OC? I guess that’s entirely determined when the sq ft of the home is calculated or dimension of individual rooms r noted?

You can usually go online and type in ceiling joists lumber span charts and that will provide you with the maximum distance and lumber spacing for different sized materials.

Flat 2x6 backing does not have to run all the way to the outside wall, need to add flat 2x4 blocks on top of the 2x6 to each cj and nailed , keeps the backing from going up when the drywall is being nailed and keeps the wall straight. 2xs about 48 on center.
In ca you need DBL sill plate
    At bottom of the windows.
On my own framing I like to make the window HDR 3 inches longer and throw a couple of floating trimmer's to nock around to get window reveals tight , but with the cost of lumber Thea's days might not be enough in the budget.
I like to clip of the top of the cjs after it is stacked but that is just me.
When laying out the studs always burn or deduct 3/4 " so drywall ends land half on the stud same with the roof sheathing but depending on the spacing might have to snip the plywood a little , always try to make as little wast as possible and keep the money in your pocket.

Currently, I am looking for a bit more information about load bearing walls. If you have, say, a 32' deep house where you've put 16' 2nd level floor joists down, but are not overlapping them, that means they will connect into an interior rim joist, right? Well you end up having that rim joist line going all the way down the center of your house. Seems important that it would need to be supported properly on the 1st level. Often times I feel like it is very intrusive to the layout I'd like to do because I'm always worried about needing to make sure I have 1st level walls running directly down the center so that 2nd level interior rim joist has something to sit on, since it's the only thing holding up all the 2nd level floor joists (in the middle at least). Would love some examples of how to handle that.

@@gregvancom I later figured it out from watching some of your other videos. Thanks anyway though. On another note, there is barely any information on the web about concrete block houses. Sheesh.

    Hello
    I have a question
I am installing vinyl plank flooring in a second floor bedroom.
Now when I pulled back the carpet there was a metal strapping running from the outside bedroom wall, across the floor into the closet. Im pretty sure it runs Into the hallway and across the length of the second floor. What is the propose of it?
We do live in California, would it have something to do with earthquakes strapping. ? I can’t think of anything g else .

You can take a picture of it and send it to me, but I think what you're looking at is a piece of "floor carpet trim". Type the phrase into your favorite search engine and see if it matches.
