I am struggling with a great addiction to porn. Many men struggle with this. I fear that I am too weak, that i am a traitor to Christ's love. That I cannot change, that I have been given over to a reprobate mind. I have hope and faith that one day, on God's time and God's will, that I will be strong enough to resist this temptation. I fell off the wagon yesterday, and I felt so dark and disgusting. I heard God's voice saying "I know you are trying, but wounds take time to heal. Keep faith in me and and keep moving forward." I know He knows my heart and how difficult this is for me. I know this something I have to swallow my pride and let God handle it. I thank you for saying this. I understand that as a human I know I will fail but this hope and redemption wash away my despair.

Glory be to God for that understanding, dear Kevin. Only the evil one wants us to feel abandoned and emptied of Christ's presence, because only then he can establish himself as ruler in our hearts. Christ will NEVER leave you, dear one - He died for you, He even descended into hell for you. Trust that Love till the end, while doing your best (small as that may be) to live the life of one who belongs to Him

I find great support in a story of St. Paisios of Mt Athos (A lot of his stuff has helped me, let's just say there's a reason he's my patron). There was a monk that was a drunkard and caused a lot of trouble with the brothers and pilgrims. One day he died and the monks went to tell Elder Paisios what they thought was good news, that the troublesome monk had died and won't be causing any more problems. St Paisios said "Yes, I already know. I saw the angels carrying his soul to heaven." The monks were bewildered why the angels would carry his soul to heaven since he was such a "bad monk". St Paisios told them: "This monk was born during wartime and his parents gave him small amounts of alcohol with his mink to put him to sleep so that police wouldn't find them wherever they were. This lead to a lifelong addiction to alcohol and when he became a monk he tried his best to quit but couldn't. Eventually, through repentance, he was able to have one less drink a day. This continued for many years. He very slowly was able to drink less but he would still end up drunk. The devil tried to discourage him but he kept repenting and trying to do better."
Even if we can't stop sinning completely after repenting once, we can still come back to God and say "I'm sorry Lord, I have done this sin again. Please forgive me and help me next time to resist the temptation more." As long as we truly mean the prayer and aren't just using it as a get out of jail free card, God will honor our patient endurance. Our guardian angels rejoice when we are able to resist temptation, even if we have fallen into it more times than we can count. Like a father proud of his child every time they take a very wabbly step while learning to walk even though he knows the child will fall down soon, so God is proud of us when we resist sinning or turn to Him in repentance after we do sin. I imagine Him saying after we repent of a habitual sin "It is okay, my dear child. I have forgiven you. Look at how long you resisted the temptation this time! You went a day without doing this! You have improved and you will continue to improve if you rest in Me."

Mark 9:49, "For everyone will be salted with fire"
I have been through the fire, and salted as well. Not pleasant, but be patient. Give Him, who allows this purification, thanks and praise, as both are true in our suffering. Remember that Jesus suffered exponentially greater ills as he entered into His passion, taking on our sins as he went. Call on Him as often as you need; He is your loving and compassionate God. Have faith that this plan for you is perfect, and you will KNOW it when it is over!
Personally, the hell I went through was of my own making. As the Church proclaims, it was "...my fault, my fault, my most grevious fault"

I find so much value in the advice that we should not put our trust (or despair) in some "level" of repentance or whatever virtue we think we (fail to) acquire. Only The Lord knows how much we fight or how difficult it is to achieve some change we intend to do in ourselves. It is the honesty of the fight that opens us to the Lord. Some of the Fathers (Saint Isaac the Syrian, for example) are saying that our fight for acquiring certain virtues has as its most important results this communion with the Lord that we acquire while striving to be with Him, beyond our limited possibilities. We build a room for the knowledge of God from the inside out while taking this fight and doing these sacrifices. I feel that the "worldly" evaluation we do of their results is only a reminiscence of our competence-based education, it is not a spiritual mindset in itself.

    • @mullmonastery
      @mullmonastery Год назад +2

St John of the Ladder speaks of people who cry a river of tears because Christ gave them that virtue, it come naturally to them. By comparison, there are others to struggle to the point of despair for a tear that never falls, but which - in its potential - is more valuable before Christ that the tears of the other. Judging others or even ourselves is always a sign of our fallen nature. Judgement belongs to Christ alone.

Hope and Repentance. Still in the Battle. The path of salvation. Her sincerity and her true desire for salvation, one hour of repentance. It's a great blessing to know that the Lord knows your heart and when His children cry, like a father he comes. I was in a place one time where my body collapsed and I cried, wept like never before and I begged for the Lord's mercy. Not too much time passed, and he lifted me out of the well. Another time I cried a lot over the Saturday of Passover and later that night I had a dream and his image, Christ's image came to my forehead, face to face, no doubt it was Him, and he said, not ready yet. I'm not sure the meaning. If you really Cry, weep, then He will come if you are sincere. His face touched mine bc I'm so blind in one eye I can't see out the other at times.

Find peace and follow it, dear one. Find joy and follow it. Find hope and love and non-judgement and follow them. All that brings darkness in our hearts is not from Christ and that is what we should learn to reject and let go of.

I think that the idea of calling everyone we meet, in our heart, with our own name, is extremely helpful in getting us to think of everyone else as being part of ourselves. Our being ONE with every human being is such an abstract idea compared to the contemporary mindset, but this "trick" seems to be quite promising. It completes what Mother Siluana was advising, regarding our saying "Lord, forgive ME (the person's name) for this sin" when someone hurts us or does something sinful against us. I have tried doing this with someone I loved, who used to say horrible words to me when he got mad. The one time I succeeded to say this prayer with full honesty was the only time that the person admitted willingly (without my saying anything to him) to having made a mistake and said "Please forgive me" (the rest of the time he was just pretending nothing happened).

Oh, Fr. Seraphim, how I needed to hear this. I had forgotten just how timely and reassuring your messages were all throughout the pandemic. THANKS BE TO GOD He blessed us for your past, present, and future councils. ☦️
P.s. I absolutely cherish the prayer rope I recently ordered from the monastery and love that the wool still smells like the earth consumed by the sheep it came from. ♥️ I prayed for the monastery using it during Vespers this evening.
Be well, beloved Father, and travel safely. ☦️

Please pray for me.I keep falling into repetitive sin. I was born again and gave up a lot of my lifestyle. Some habits and ways left me very fast and some I conquer through the strength of Christ and a pure desire to be a better person. It’s as if my strength is gone to resist, that I once had. The world around me makes me very depressed. I once had the strong feeling that I was supposed to disappear from the world and be in continuous prayer but feel I missed my calling. Now I just push through the day in a state of waiting for some spark from Christ to no the path or direction I should go. Please pray for divine guidance…. Gods will not my own!!!

Good morning Father. I've made many attempts to acquire a spiritual father to supervise my praying the Jesus Prayer, but have received no response for over a year. So I've been reading about that practice and doing it myself, but I remember that you cautioned anyone who did not have a director, that the practice might lead to pride. Would you be my director? I am a 74 year old woman, a a published author, who has been a committed Christian since I was in nursery school.

Thankyou fr Seraphim, sin can be so deceitful in our hearts and gets in our way of communion with God.
God wants us to come to him boldly that we may recieve mercy and grace to help.
Hebrews 12:1-2 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
