Exactly why ugly stik is king. You said it yourself just a damn workhorse. Every single catsfish pole I have I spray paint the ends white. About a foot to 16 inches down.
Dave, I think you could use a cane pole and still land huge cats all day long. Skill, kwnolodge and equipment selection, proper use thereof is what makes it happen. Your equipment reviews are good as gold and spot on every time, keep em coming!
Although I do not own any MadCatz rods. I do have the Berkley Big Game and Uglysticks. I haven’t found a reason to change them. They have always worked for me. Thanks for the review. Greatly enjoyed the video. Thanks Dave!
Great video and I learned a lot. TBH, I swapped out all my expensive rods that I didn't like and put the Berkeley Big Game rods in their place at $25 each and I swear they are better rods and I haven't lost a fish all summer with them. While I haven't caught monsters I have caught a lot in the 20's and 30's with no problems. Hopefully will catch some bigger ones this week on Watts Barr.
Hey. Great video. I never want to take the time to learn about the action o fishing rods. You didn't go into great depth about it, but how you explained it made a lot of sense and was interesting. Great video. Definitely learned something. Thanks
Blank, guides, handle; each very important, in a technical way, to the overall performance! Excellent technical explanation. Thank you. and PS. Yes, Ugly Stik Bigwater are good choice for big fish. I run them in my boat for dipsey-diver Salmon trolling, with great results (very pleased to see they ditched the ceramic guide inserts, always failing!).
I haven't even made it to the end of the video, but I'm commenting. That rod seems to be a good fit for the size you are targeting. Enough give and take with the set up you've got. Around a 40 lb class fish. Plenty good
Dave I fish with a lite action ugly stick for bate and a cased net and medium heavy for the big fish thanks again for the great information on those rods fish on from Illinois
Lol the title tho but good video I was thinking today about catfish rods many rods that can pull a giant catfish in think most ppl that talk about catfish big ones don't speak on what's best rods to pull a big catfish that hugs the bottom don't wanna come off bottom.
Been fishing The ugly stick rods for 30 plus years from ultra lite .to medium heavy.they are absolutely fantastic rods..own many others as well the ugly stick is supreme.. tiger Stick is great for grouper and snapper king mackerel.. just a work horse if a rod..well worth the money...
I just switched all my rods to Mad Katz. I wanted hi vis rod due to a lot of night fishing and they look sexy. Customer service at MK is great. Don't know anything about US tho. The Ugly just didn't cover all the bases for me. I'm not catching the monsters you do either so I'm not flexing em to that extent. Just having a ton of fun
I can use my Mickey Mouse rod around here. I went out on the creek Sunday, and I caught several blue cats. One was almost big enough to eat. A couple of 6 inch blue cats and a 3 inch blue cat. On a 5/0 hook!!!! Nothing on cut bait, not even a turtle. Every one I caught was on nightcrawlers.
Spot on. I own ugly stick and mad Katz rods. The differences between the two are night and day. This says nothing bad against madkatz gear rods. It says these two rods may be used for personal preference snd different rod response for different fishing techniques. I do an awful lot of bank fishing where I live. I love the madkatz medium heavy rods for slinging heavy baits. I also like the action for fighting the fish. But this is where the rod differences come in...I have lost 4 big fish this year due to hook sets with circle hooks. I switched rod actions on my madkatz rods to medium and medium heavy. I still use uglystiks from time to time in the 10, 11, and 12ft medium heavy actions.
That mad katzz rod is probably hollow in the center and the ugly stik is not, at least until you get down towards the butt. The Ugly Stiks, no matter which one you get, have always been solid, the top half anyways, so, I don't know Dave, that may have something to do with it, like I said I don't know, I've never had any mad katzz rod, so I can't say much about them.
When I started watching you , you fished from the bank using 12' Okuma longitude rods . At that time I only had a 9' okuma longitude rod . Now I have 13 of them from 8' to 11' , had a 12' but didn't like it the distance between the butt end and the reel made it seem out of balance to me.
Mad katz heavy action all the way. Good tip bend and a hellacious backbone. But I see what you're saying about suspended fishing. Idk. I'm pretty sold on my mad katz. You just made Matt knight lose sleep for 3 weeks lol. On a side note, please make a video listing some good bank spots on the Tennessee River so I can put my 12 year old son on some above average cats. We live in northeast GA on Lake Hartwell. Not having much luck here on anything above 5 lbs. It would be a 4 hour drive but worth it. Please Dave. Please
so...the way I look at it....if you know how to use the drag on your reel right you can use just about any setup to catch big fish..I myself have never caught anything by using a certain brand over another..I've caught just as many fish on my ugly stik as I have my 12ft okuma longitude and can't really tell that much difference..certain names and certain baits alone don't make the difference..if a fish is gonna bite it will or it won't
Hey Dave I don't know anything about the Mad Catz rugs but I use the 12 ft heavy action slime cat rods with pen 30 level wind reels and Meat Hunter 14 ft heavy action and I have a TLD real on one and a pen senator on the other and the heavy action meat Hunters seem like they have more give than the Slime cat rides the slime seem like they would break before they would bend but the Meat Hunter rides I really do like they've been but they also have a lot of backbone throughout the whole rod
But can you tell if you even have a bite from a 3-5 lb blue? I have different brands all medium heavy. Some are like telephone poles n others not do much
Hope all is well. Shakespeare makes 90% of the rod blanks available on the market to day lamiglas, penn, diawa list is large you are able to specify. How fast or slow the taper is on the blank and rod wall thickness depending on use catfish, sturgeon, tuna, marlin, whale just kidding about whale.
Damn phone types what it wants. Picks up words from previous comments and inserts those words in later comments. It's a pisser. Sounds like ZZ TOP. There!
Commentary made for people who really want to know the practical information about rods. Thank you Dave.
Exactly why ugly stik is king. You said it yourself just a damn workhorse. Every single catsfish pole I have I spray paint the ends white. About a foot to 16 inches down.
You need to be on national geographic!😂

You have no idea
Great advice man!
Great content and channel!
Nice fish brother
Dave thanks for the lesson on rods I really enjoyed it

Berkeley big game, and ugly stick catfish. Great sturgeon rods
Great video and I learned a lot.

What's TBH???
@@jamesbaskins6351 to be honest
Two words : Shakespeare Ugly Stik ! 🤣🤣🤣
sounds like a good honest appraisal.
Great shows keep up the good work fish on Dave

I like your review/discussions about your gear, the why and how. Good 1 Dave.
Thank you so much for your fair comparison Dave ,

I knew the answer to this before I even clicked it. The ugly stick has proven itself for a long time now. Even in salt water.
Good Afternoon My Good Bro Catfishing Dave
Great rod informational Dave. Like I have always thought big fish takes a big rod. Big balls.
gonna design the "BEST BIG FISH ROD" Go for it !!!!!
Great information Have Thank You 👍

I've always used uglysticks for cat .they have always been great rods .
Great info, bank!
I wish I had a long stiff rod, with some bend, that can handle head shakes. With balls of course
Great info Dave.

A fair comparison !
Thank you, for the lesson Professor Catfish Dave!!!
Very helpful information I honestly had no idea on that.
After trying several rods myself, the Muddy River Blue cat rods is still my favorite rod. I had them with me on your old boat.
(MH)
Good information. Thank you.
Among fisherman it's ok to say you want a really stiff one with balls but watch where you say that Dave.
Dave love this hope you find some more fans to take fishing
Team hard life!!!!! Rods!!! In courpis christy tx
Might be interesting to see how you like the Ugly Stik Tiger rods.
You should look into Cajun rods they have good stiff rods with great back bone. Plus there made in the USA made out of carbon fiber
Thanks for the video Dave 👍
Dave you could teach a class on the intricacies of catfishing
Offshore angler trophy class boat rod X-Heavy $39 , stainless line guides only downside is graphite reel seat, I prefer aluminum personally
Get you a Extra Heavy HellCat 🙌🏻
Have you checked out the Daiwa Beef Kitty rod? I got 12' one at the end of the season so no hook ups yet. Love the content

Good video, been using ugly stik brand my whole life, tough to out perform.
I've never had a rod with balls but, a couple of those 3rd shift waffle house waitresses sure did.
Great vid Dave!!!

maybe change hook type when suspend fishing 10/0 or bigger wide gap octopus hook
Another great video.
Good points all Dave
Tangling with catfish "ext" rods are pretty stout rods.
incurred like ZZ TOP.
If u want a really stiff rod......try the shattered cat heavy action rods. Definitely the stiffest rod I've ever used. Not much tip action tho.
The sliver cat elite rods are very stiff yet also have some flex
any I love the videos..keep it comin Dave
Have you tried any “tangling with catfish” rods?
you should try some of the rods made for slow pitch jigging on salt water. They are expensive but will handle crazy big fish
When I started watching you , you fished from the bank using 12' Okuma longitude rods . At that time I only had a 9' okuma longitude rod . Now I have 13 of them from 8' to 11' , had a 12' but didn't like it the distance between the butt end and the reel made it seem out of balance to me.
Dave, Bring on the show. God Bless
I use a lurera it's stiff and 8 other rods lol my ugly is my favorite.
If I had a choice I would choose the Mad cat rod just my opinion thanks Dave
WhiskerSeeker!
Are the Ugly Stick rods the same length as the MK? For some reason I thought those were 7’ instead of 7’6”.
Mad katz heavy action all the way. Good tip bend and a hellacious backbone. But I see what you're saying about suspended fishing. Idk. I'm pretty sold on my mad katz. You just made Matt knight lose sleep for 3 weeks lol.

The GOAT
Dave what rod would you recommend for salmon. I dont have the space for 1 piece rods so I use a two piece.
In the current I'm fishing I have to use heavies if they're not hooked good they're just gonna off in that current
So when do uget them meat hunter rods? I think youmight like them... I love mine
Preach man! I've mentioned the meat hunters many times. I have 16 of them. And they each serve a beautiful purpose.
Alot of shops sell and fisherman swear by Meat Hunter rods round here in Oklahoma.
The wording of the title is going to troll up the fish your not looking to catch. Lol
I'm Matt Knight and I disapprove this message.
Lol
Dont take a booster... Or especially the original
How do you feel about cat fever poles? Very similar to the mad cat poles.
so...the way I look at it....if you know how to use the drag on your reel right you can use just about any setup to catch big fish..I myself have never caught anything by using a certain brand over another..I've caught just as many fish on my ugly stik as I have my 12ft okuma longitude and can't really tell that much difference..certain names and certain baits alone don't make the difference..if a fish is gonna bite it will or it won't
Maybe I should bring you some meat hunters to try out 😁
Have you tried okuma battle Cat rods? They're fast action and pretty stiff imo.
Awesome!
Did you ever try any of the extra heavy's from hellcat or big cat fever
But can you tell if you even have a bite from a 3-5 lb blue? I have different brands all medium heavy. Some are like telephone poles n others not do much
Dave, are they both glass/graphite composite rods?
Hope all is well. Shakespeare makes 90% of the rod blanks available on the market to day lamiglas, penn, diawa list is large you are able to specify. How fast or slow the taper is on the blank and rod wall thickness depending on use catfish, sturgeon, tuna, marlin, whale just kidding about whale.
Disagree on the rod seats. Personal preference for sure but I prefer the aluminum vs plastic.
You need to compare the Ugly Stick to the Hellcat....
The ugly stik is a better rod
I use the 11.5 foot Denali and seem to be a great rod for 70$
How tuff is the reel seat on the ugly
I fiend Steve Stacy got a heavy action rod that he sells that would be the ticket
Damn phone types what it wants. Picks up words from previous comments and inserts those words in later comments. It's a pisser.
Sounds like ZZ TOP. There!
What it boils down to is if you’d rather support the small private owned businesses or the mega businesses. 🤷🏽♂️

Where the hell are you ? I’m gone a call Dieter Melhorn on you.
