True. An Elder Scrolls game set in the Summerset Isles would be awesome.

One bit of evidence to take into account is how often the various elves breed, and therefore create a new generation. You measure your "closeness" to your ancestors by how many generations have passed, not time gap. Grandparents are still grandparents whether or not they're 50 or 500 years older than you. If the Altmer are the longest-lived elves, and they don't breed that often, that means there has been fewer generations of Altmer since time began. That would make them the closest to the Ehlnofey simply by having been fewer chances to distance themselves from the Ehlnofey than everyone else.

I agree. Even if the Maomer came from the Altmer, their genealogy has considerably changed. So with that said, they're an offshoot of Altmer, not Aldmer.
And given Tolpal's discovery of the Dwemer, I believe that perhaps the Dwemer and Falmer may also be direct descendants of Aldmer as well, similar to the Altmer line, although of course not as close as the Altmer, given the Tundra of Skyrim and the underground of Morrowind are very different than what Old Aldmeris must've been.
Which begs the question of what Aldmeris, if it truly existed, was really like. Since Aldmer depictions seem to have a more golden hue of sorts, and the Altmer take pride in purity, I'd say Summerset is likey a very similar habitat to what the Ancient/Mythical homeland of the Mer may have been like

Personally, you made a better case for the Bosmer to be closest to the protoelves. Sure, maybe they were wanderers that had simply never happened upon this ancestral homeland, but the mythology of elves has seemed to always include an element of not having a concrete physical appearance. There are versions of elves that can appear young for centuries untold, but change the same as the world around them. Some of these different versions even go from animal like hoofs and claws to hands and feet depending on if they spent the last century in the forest or the city. Something similar could be happening here.

Unless I'm missing something, it sounds like the Altmer have it right. By all accounts it seems that Summerset was the first Aldmeri civilization outside of Aldmeris. Summerset should therefore be the most culturally, architecturally, and genetically, similar to Aldmeris.
It was the Maormer, NOT the Altmer, who were exiled to a far away island. This would cause the entire Maormer population to evolve to suit a new and drastically different environment. This is called allopatric speciation.
The Altmer also have the slowest generational turnover rate that we know of, meaning that the fewest generations have passed since the time of the Aldmer. In every way, the Aldmer lineage has undergone the least amount of evolutionary pressure to change on Summerset.

I think it makes perfect sense. And I love the idea of Old Ehlnofey actually being a sort of surviving chunk from the previous kalpa that then gets fought over and sundered. It would explain things like Umaril the Unfeathered and the Sky Forge.
Similarly, I think it's very possible that the Maormer and the Altmer are both right: they are splinter groups of the non-Wandering Ehlnofey, and so both have just as much right to the claim of "pure decent". Any physical changes that may have occured between the two need not make them less "pure", since the Ehlnofey obviously have (or had) a huge potential for adapting to whatever environment they find themselves in, so who can say if the Maormer or the Altmer are more physically similar to the original Old Ehlnofey?

...ALL Elves are descended from the Aldmer, the True Elves. Even the Orsimer, the Pariah Elves, are descended from the Aldmer via the Chimer. The Maormer King Orgnum is perhaps the last surviving Aldmer. He was supposedly a rich nobleman of the original Aldmeri Dominion, as "The Empire of the Aldmer", who led a rebellion and thus was banished behind a "veil of mists", which is actually what the Maormer homeland's name translates to. While Orgnum, as an Elvish mage of prime bloodline, is immortal unless killed, his servants and soldiers that were banished with him eventually became the Maormer we know of today, because everyone knows that Elves adapt to the local magic.
That adaptation effect is why there are so many different types of elves. The Aldmer were attuned to Ada-Mantia, while the Altmer attuned to Crystal-like-Law and the Aylieds to White-Gold. The Maormer attuned to the seas, while the Bosmer attuned to the trees and Green-sap, the Falmer attuned to the snow and likely to Snow-Throat, and the Dwemer the earth and depths. Arguably, the Dwemer were also attuned to Walk-Brass, but time is funky and they MADE Walk-Brass yet Walk-Brass the Tower always existed. The Chimer were basically unattuned, while the Khajiit (Because remember, they are elves too, and in their least-catlike look like Wood Elves) attuned to Azura. The Orsimer attuned to Malacath (and were previously attuned to his former form of Trinimac). The Manmer, also called the Bretons, are self-attuned like all men are. The Dunmer attuned to Red-Heart. The Left-Handed Elves were likely attuned to Orichalc before it sank.

I don't think Tamriel, Yokuda, Atmora, and Akavir can be the remnants of Aldmeris. Aldmeris was full of elves, so logically their should have been elves on any and all of its remnants. Atmora and Akavir never had any elves (excluding potential Khajiit relatives on the latter) so they're them ruled out. The Hist weren't in Aldmeris, and since they're only found on Tamriel it must either be or include the largest chunk of their home world. Of the four, Yokuda is actually the most likely to be Aldmeris, on account of having elves, lacking Hist, and sharing a similar fate to Aldmeris. But I'm pretty sure the Altmer and Maormer would both be angry at that suggestion, and it seems more likely that the Sinistral Elves were just another group of refugees from Aldmeris who were separated from the others and discovered Yokuda instead of Tamriel. And not even the Maormer claim that Pyandonea is Aldmeris, so that rules it out.
I think it's most likely that Aldmeris is a sixth continent that simply no longer exists.

Maybe the various races of Nirn don't need to be genetically related to end up with similar features. Maybe there's a sort of "intelligent humanoid (elfoid? meroid?) template" that they develop into via _convergent evolution_

That could make sense, but I feel the fact that they can have offspring with each other negates that for the most part.

That isn’t the lore though. The lore is pretty explicit that all mer and men share a common origin wkth the creation of nirn

@@dstinnettmusic I'm not saying they don't have any common ancestor, I'm saying one doesn't have to have evolved out of the other

The actually look a lot like snow elves, much more than high elves. Feels like this backs up their claims somewhat.

What if they are both equally descendants of the old elnofay? Who says one changed less from the original species than the other? They could have both started changing at the same time and just took different skill trees.
